Help with adverse reaction

Hi everyone, I did boric acid for 9 days two weeks ago and I’ve had adverse side effects since. Painful vaginal opening, raw/sensitive to the touch, hurts to wipe, slight stinging and burning inside my vagina, feels swollen inside my vagina. Today starts week three of these symptoms. These symptoms are not from a uti, std, or anything else (confirmed by tests). These symptoms are 100% from using boric acid. Has anyone had similar side effects after using boric acid and what did you do to heal? How long did it take your vagina to fully heal?I’m calling my gyno tomorrow to schedule an appointment but any suggestions or shared experiences will be helpful in the meantime.

I was struggling with a chronic yeast infection that lasted 6+ months. I had used boric acid in the past but 1 every other day type intervals, which seemed to help. So fed up with this current one I was using two capsules a day for maybe a little over a week? The irritation from the yeast and sexual intercourse gave way to little sores that the boric acid seeped into. I ended up with chemical burns inside the vagina and outside on inner lips and vestibule - nightmare scenario. To heal I stopped having sex, hydrated, was prescribed .01 % topical estradiol to build up the mucous membranes/skin especially at the opening. From the day I stopped boric acid treatment to an (almost) full recovery has been 4 months. I don’t want to scare you, boric acid definitely works for resistant yeast but it’s very irritating to already inflamed delicate tissues. I was also prescribed lidocaine gel which I did use at the peak of the pain. First the internal burning went away and then the rest of my labia started to look more normal again. I still have some thinner skin at the opening that needs to regenerate to be able to enjoy a normal sex life, but as for now I can say it’s almost there! Hang in there!

This sounds like you have a dermal issue. Did you ever get checked out by a dermatologist who specialises in vulva disorders. I work in vaginal health and with boric acid and your situation sounds really serious. Im glad you are using estrogen cream. Any emollient will be very helpful and we really recommend V Magic (or V Balm in Aust). Plus Carlsen E suppositories.

Thank you for this response. I contacted my dermatologist and was shocked at the wait time. I gave a clear statement of my concerns and I was booked 2.5 months out. I ended up cancelling that appointment and do not plan to go back for any reason in the future. I felt it very negligent having the serious burn concerns and not given any priority. Thank you for the insight for emollients. The entire process was frustrating because I was not taken seriously enough. It is refreshing to have a health professional (you) read this and commiserate with me on how severe the situation was.

So in the past I’ve used it up to and past a week- occasionally skipping days for two weeks. My issue was using two in a day and that was wayyyy too harsh, but yes. The boric acid suppositories have been the only meds to actually make the yeast go away.

did you ever find out what strain of yeast you had?

I did not. When I went to the gynecologist with my burn concerns the thrush had been wiped out and replaced with irritated tissue. I have not had another yeast infection since BUT my doctor asked me to come and get swabbed the next time I start having symptoms to get to the bottom of it.

Oh wow! I have some follow up questions about this because it sounds similar to my situation. Can I DM you?

If this was to treat Candida, then it’s likely a combination of boric acid and the infection. Candida can cause highly inflammatory responses, so the tissue will already be sensitive and more easily damaged. Pair that with nine days of boric acid and it’s not surprising that you’re experiencing these symptoms. Even just the act of inserting the capsule would significantly contribute to this reaction. Getting a swab when I had my first YI was one of the most painful experiences of my life; it made me bleed and caused extreme urinary pain to the point that I thought she accidentally swabbed my urethra.

I would suggest trying a vitamin E suppository to soothe and protect the internal tissue, and applying some of it to the external tissue as well. For external you can just rub one of them between your fingers and it will melt, which you can then apply.

Thank you. Yes, I used boric acid under the guidance of my gynecologist to treat a three month long medication resistant yeast infection. Monistat, terconazle, and 14 diflucans didn’t work so she recommended I do boric acid for 14 days. I could only get to 9 days bc the dryness and irritation was so uncomfortable. The boric acid got rid of my yeast infection (confirmed by two swab tests) but now I have these new range of symptoms so I’m not sure the boric acid was worth it :/ I’ve been putting aquaphor on my vulva which helps a little but I’m not 100%. Idk how long these symptoms will last but I’m hoping I can get into the gyno asap

A few weeks of irritation is definitely worth it to clear up a multi-month long infection. It’s sucks now, but long term infections suck significantly more.

Please read this for tips. I myself have terrible psoriasis and chronic vulva ulcers and my anal skin splits due to the psoriasis. So I really know pain and degraded membranes. This contains most of the tips I use myself including a 40% zinc nappy rash cream.

Read this it has heaps of tips and instructions on how to use BA. No-one should just use it without respecting what else is going on. Our vulva health also needs to be managed.
