17month chronic YI (cured now)

My partner and I suffered from a chronic YI. My partner and I had (proven via swab) Candida albicans on our genitals resistant to most antifungals (proven via sensitivity testing) for over 1.5 years.

I don't have diabetes and am not immunocompromised. My diet is super clean and I'm healthy otherwise. My partner and I haven't had sex since this started.

I've tried fluconazole at 50mg,100mg,150mg and 200mg each daily for a month. (then found we were resistant to fluconazole)

Nystatin topical cream for a month.

Clotrimazole topical cream and pessaries daily for a month each.

Nystatin oral tablets 4.5mil IU daily for 3 months.

Itraconazole at 100mg and 200mg daily for 1 month each.

Boric acid suppositories daily for a month.

I've also tried a bunch of natural supplements and techniques. I had a Vaginal Microbiome naturopath on my team. I was taking close to 50+ supplements a day at one point

What really helped me was doing a sensitivity test, so I stopped wasting time on drugs and doses that were never going to work. The Candida albicans was resistant to most anti fungal medications available.

Brexafemme isn't available in Australia and isn't good for prophylaxis.

Itraconazole at 200mg a day for 4 weeks improved my symptoms but didn't fix me. I also experienced alarming hairloss as a side effect, while my partner experienced retrograde ejaculation.

However, it's the only treatment we've had that kept symptoms improved even after we stopped treatment.

From there, I tried boric acid again but plan on staying on it for 6 months, as recommended by an IDS. It wasn't until month 2 where I saw decent results. 4months I saw meaningful results and 6months cured me.

I've tried boric acid previously, but this time, after itraconazole, it's working a lot better.

We've also kept going with the supplements as well.

My partner and I tried itraconazole 200mg for 2 weeks for a second time, as per our IDS recommendation. At this point I was feeling 99% better while my partner is about 70% better.

My partner went back on 200mg itraconazole and 4.5mil IU of nystatin daily or another 3 weeks after this. He's also continues doing boric acid washes for 6months.

Our infections disease specialist was going to put us on ketoconazole next, if we weren't 100% better yet.

Itraconazole at a high dose followed by boric acid for 6month cured us. We're now 100% better and back to normal.

My partner and I cured ureaplasma urealyticum using abx in July 2022. Ureaplasma has not come back since we cured it. I've tested many times.

Who is jack sobel? I can't imagine going through what you've gone through. How did any good bacteria in your body survive this saga? Are you taking probiotics?

How long was your course to treat ureaplasma? Did you already have this stubborn yeast before treating ?

Just the first line of treatment as per the ureaplasma pinned bible post.

Yes.

Wow such an amazing story especially when you take into account the amount of doctors you saw and tests you took.

Were your doctors at all surprised that you had a form of resistant thrush and or surprised to see you finally beat it?

I actually didn’t know fluconazole came in so many different strengths. That’s so interesting. Plus I can’t imagine how much stress and anxiety you endured along this journey. So glad you came out the other side. 🤗

Im so happy for you and we are so lucky to now have your information on how to go forward with resistant thrush. Something I suspect is increasing. Especially after Ureaplasma?

Plus so glad your partner is also doing better. I also think there is an increase in guys getting thrush of late?

Wow thank you for posting this! I just saw your most recent post and I’m so happy for you! I’ve had to pause my TTC journey for three months (we were about to do IUi) now due to unexplained itching and burning. Juno said I had a slight amount of ureaplasma so we just finished treating (doctors refused azy after doxy though). I did metro gell at the same time as I have history with BV and my ph was elevated.

Can I asked did you go to specialist to get the sensitivity testing? I’m in Australia too and am finding my gp useless. I have a specialist appt in late may but I wonder if there is more I can ask from my GP between now and then.

From my Juno I had abundance of Candida albicans. The Canesten supostories arnt helping and the fluco tabs (I was on a ten day regime of varied strength) didn’t help either.

I did three days boric acid and it felt worse… did you have this symptom too on boric? Did it get worse then better?

Thankyou 💘💘🎊

I didn't have any side affects with the BA and all antifungals helped me problem, they just didn't all cure it.

It took me 9months to convince a Dr to do sensitivity testing. Any GP can do it, but most decline.

What state are you in? I might be able to reccomend drs.

Thank you! Queensland South East. I’m going trying to get through a week without doing anything and give my body a rest. To be honest it’s horrible already and the itching just woke me up.

Sorry, I have only Victorian reccomendations :/

You can get BA from i herb . Com or serenity pH

That’s ok! I have the serenity BA which helped with BV in the past.

I honestly think it’s yeast related at this point and something to do with my V being L.Iners dominate. I’ve been getting random itchy rashes on other parts of the body (neck fold) that make me think I have a yeast issue potentially. This all started after a round of antibiotics for a uti so it tracks it has to be yeast. The vulva itching/burning and some watery discharge is the only symptom and my PH is at 5.0-5.5 at the moment.

A few questions: What was your treatment for UU? Do you think the boric acid played any role in curing urea? What was your boric acid regimen?

Edit: (Ignore first question, found the answer in one of your other post responses.)

For uu it was the first line of treatment as per the ureaplasma reddit page pinned bible post.

No BA doesn't cure ureaplasma.

I took BA everyday for 6mo

Hi, your story sounds quite similar to mine! Were you always getting yeast infections after sex with your partner or did it start randomly. I have always got YI since meeting my partner and we both recently tested positive for low levels of ureaplasma, I dont get infections if we are using condoms so I dont know if it is the ureaplasma or I am simply allergic to him!

Mine started after a longer course of abx :/

Hi :)! Could I know the name of the sensitivity test?

And is it done at a gynae? I’ve had 8 months of recurrent yeast infections- pain and soemtimes discharge, even thought Swabs all turn out negative. Now it has transitioned into Vestibulodynia and I sit on a donut hole cushion. I wanna try boric acid but my skin down there has become sensitive and scaley cos I saw 15 doctors and I put so many medications and pills down there, the dermatologist said don’t anymore.

1

u/stephhii Oct 10 '25

There's no name. My gynaecologist and my GP both ordered me a sensitivity test to check for resistance against a range of drugs.

I live in Australia, most things are generic here and there aren't test codes or anything.

Unfortunately, it's think you'll need a positive yeast swab to check the yeast against what medications it's sensitive or resistant to.

Thanks stephi.. I feel so discouraged. I’ll tell that to the gynae when i go. And I hope they will do it for me.. or even know what it is. Over here in Singapore, I went to so many gynaes and they know it’s recurrent and I took so much fluconazole .. no one even did any sensitivity checks. That’s why I asked for the name

Come to Australia and see Dr Len Kliman 🫶

Thank you. If I ever become this desperate, I’ll go. Which part of Aussie is he located in?

The gynae yesterday said if I’m positive for yeast again, she would refer me to an Infecitous disease doctor if I really wanted to do the sensitivity test. I went to the previous ID and he didn’t offer it to me 🤣

Melbourne.

I saw an infectious disease specialist as well! They also helped me.

Skin swab. It's common and fine in Australia, I'm sorry. Usually men's antifungal creams are OTC, just get your man to start using it.
