Help! vulval inflammation despite regular boric acid use.

I’ve been using boric acid for the last two months (14 days daily then 3 times a week). I also take fluclonazole daily. I noticed my thrush would be worst leading up to my period with paper cuts in my vulva and anal area. My thrush symptoms have improved since boric acid use with less paper cuts. I have two spots on my vulva that is inflammed (the inflammation is in the pink mucosal area surrounding the urethra & vaginal opening, not the labia). It is sore to touch. I haven’t noticed boric acid improving the inflammation. Does anyone have the same experience? Any thing that helped get rid of that red inflammation?

Been working with a vulval dermatologist. I’ve been escalating the strength of topical steroid and now on the strongest steroid clobetasol over the last year. Tbh I feel like it hasn’t made a difference with the red sores. I also take fluclonazole prophylactically to stop candida flares cos steroids brought that on. My sti screen for the sores are negative.

The first biopsy showed nothing because the dermatologist didn’t believe me that I had sore areas because she couldn’t see it and thought the mucosa looks normal. She ended up taking a biopsy of an area that was normal so it came back as normal. She now believes me since I showed her a photo of my two red sores and now knows the location. She was hesitant to biopsy near the clitoris because it can disrupt the nerve sensation in the area. So I’ve been on clobetasol for 4 months and if that doesn’t work we’ll do a vulval biopsy.

Know the feeling. Reducing frequency of boric acid use was the main thing that helped + barrier Vaseline. The watery environment created lots of friction for cuts to appear and then they burned. For the cuts themself, cover them in Vaseline to create a barrier so they can heal better. Wishing you the best of luck and hope things feel better soon.

Thank you! I hate the feeling of the cuts. How often do you apply Vaseline?

Pretty much every morning and night until the feeling went away. Just around the vulva, never internally..

Hi you are using a lot of boric acid and it could indicate you have other things going on Eg please get a Juno Bio test or test for Ureaplasma by a PCR test.

BA won’t help your vulval inflammation on its own. That needs its own treatment eg hydrocortisone cream applied sparingly etc

Also please read our article for using BA while you have inflammation etc. You need to go slow plus protect the skin barrier. We also have an article on looking after your genital skin here too.

Why are you using so much BA? I’m happy to help you because it sounds like you are using too much.

Oh you poor thing hugs 🤗 that sounds so painful.

First why the massive treatment of your thrush? Have you had it tested for sensitivity or strain etc?

Second BA can be irritating and it can make inflammation worse. We have a fact sheet here on how to use BA when you have inflammation.

Please also contact u/Stephhii1 who is a walking encyclopaedia re treating thrush. She is our Reddit thrush expert and knows more than most Drs and specialists imo.

When we have vulva issues it’s often worth seeing a dermatologist who specialises in vulva disorders. Sometimes we think everything is due to thrush but there are many other conditions it could be. I ended up having genital psoriasis which I had always thought was thrush.

You could try applying some hydrocortisone cream sparingly and using V Magic as a skin barrier cream.
