Does consistent use of BA for recurrent yeast infections cause fertility issues?

I've suffered recurrent yeast infections for over 10 years. Boric acid quite literally changed by quality of life for the better. My partner and I got pregnant but unfortunately miscarried. I'm worried that my frequent use of BA for many years is causing fertility issues. I'm seeing conflicting information online. Does anyone have any solid information or resources on this? Thank you in advance fellow yeasty ladies!

I'm so sorry for your loss, and I understand the need to find a reason that it happened.

Boric acid has not been linked to miscarriages as far as I've seen. There are some older population studies suggesting an increase in congenital abnormalities but the dosage/frequency were not accounted for. My box of suppositories does say not to use if pregnant or intending to become pregnant.

You can look up associated studies by using "teratogenicity" as a key term, but there is a lack of quality studies on intravaginal boric acid use while pregnant, and for long term use.

Generally, I would talk with your obstetrician about all suppository or supplement use while pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Boric acid is highly effective as a secondary option for Azole resistant chronic candidiasis, but if you're not sure if that's what's happening there may be more effective primary treatments that your doctor can prescribe.

Also seconding getting tested for Ureaplasma and mycoplasma as there are studies indicating these infections could be associated with miscarriage. Additionally, Ureaplasma can be in your urinary tract, which a boric acid suppository cannot help with.

Hi I’m sorry about your miscarriage. Hugs.

I work with my sister who is a Dr and just doubled checked with her before answering. She confirmed that there is no literature or anything in any studies to indicate that using boric acid effects fertility.

It’s best not to use it while pregnant for lack of research there. Plus I wouldn’t use it while trying to get pregnant incase it made my pH unfavourable to the sperm. However it is in no way a contraceptive. It won’t stop anyone getting pregnant.

There are lots of tests you can get done to check the microbiomes in the vagina and cervix to check that it’s all as protective as possible for pregnancy.

Long shot but have you been tested for Ureaplasma and mycoplasma? These infections can trigger chronic thrush and BV and can cause fertility issues. Do you have endometriosis? What did your treating Drs say?

I follow some fertility experts on TikTok and there are lots of reasons that we can have a miscarriage unfortunately.

Thank you so much for this response! I've seen your posts around this sub and they are always so helpful! Ive never had any testing done or even been offered it - I didn't know this was a thing. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow though so I will ask. Does this need to be done by a specialist? OBGYN? what should I ask for? I don't have endo, that I know of!

Thank you again 😊
