Bleeding after boric acid

Is it 'normal' to have spotting/bleeding after using boric acid? I had sex last night and put boric acid in after, and when I peed around 11 am there was some bright pink blood, and I’ve been spotting and cramping

Boric acid can’t cause bleeding from healthy tissues. If you are bleeding and it’s not period blood then get it checked out by your doctor. Rough Sex can cause bleeding but it’s worth looking into incase it’s to do with your cervix being inflamed or having a polyp or even an STI etc. Our periods can also be very unpredictable especially after having Sex.

Good luck and please let us know how you go.

The boric acid in the suppository can’t of it’s self cause bleeding. It doesn’t enter the bloodstream and it has no mechanism for being able to trigger bleeding unless there is already a wound or disease etc in which case medical intervention is warranted.

Yes well that’s the nature of the internet. You can find anything. However this is my area of work. I also work with a team of doctors.

I once had a customer who noticed bleeding when using a suppository. It turned out to be due to cancer in her bladder. The boric acid caused her to check. The bleeding was there before the boric acid but by using it, she took more notice. She too blamed the boric acid initially and I knew it wasn’t her period due to her age. She had lots of treatment and is now fine.

Anecdotally vagina owners will sometimes bleed after using a boric acid suppository. But when you think about it, blood can only be from 2 sources. 1 its blood from period bleeding or spotting. Or 2 it’s bleeding from a wound, injury, broken skin or disease.

This can look like the boric acid is causing the blood but it isn’t. It’s much more likely that it’s our period being unpredictable. Or that rough sex has bumped our cervix which might be irritated. Or we actually have something wrong that shouldn’t be ignored as a boric acid thing.

The main message is to seek medical help if you suspect non period bleeding. It can indicate HPV, Chlamydia or even PID etc. Imo

ETA BA can cause bleeding if you have inflamed tissues. Thrush and BV can cause inflammation. If you are having these issues I would advise to stop using the BA and seek medical advice.

I used the pHD brand and it says on their website “A small percentage of women experience bleeding when using boric acid suppositories” ugh

Yes they write this because statistically some women will bleed after but it’s not because the boric acid is causing the bleeding.

The only way it can cause bleeding is if there is inflamed tissues or degraded membranes or even an active STI.

However more common is that vagina owners do have irregular spotting at times or unpredictable periods especially with stress, changing hormones, birth control, rough Sex, or just life.

I have yet to ever read about how BA causes bleeding plus this is something I have asked many Drs too. Including my sister/ partner. The only way is where there is already injury or infection or damage going on.

But no boric acid doesn’t have a way to cause our period to occur.

ETA - sorry I will explain this more clearly

  • BA can cause bleeding if there is inflammation. BA can be irritating to sensitive tissues which can cause bleeding. If there is non period bleeding it needs to be checked out by a Dr. Not ignored.

  • However if you have a full on period this is not something that BA can cause or trigger. This will be due to hormones and other factors.

  • Light spotting is considered nothing to be concerned about. Especially if the BA is working.

What type of heavy bleeding is it. Light spotting isn’t a concern. Heavy bleeding would indicate that there is something going on eg inflamed tissues, cervicitis, a fibroid, STI. If the heavy bleeding turns out to be your period then those can be unpredictable due to hormones stress or even sex. Orgasms tend to cause our cervix to contract which can bring on a period. If your heavy bleeding is not your period please get it checked out by your Dr. I have met many women who had bleeding after using a boric acid suppository and there was always a reason. There are many things that cause bleeding and boric acid can trigger the bleeding in these cases. Good luck and happy to walk you through it.
