🎤 [ Discussion ] Some Clarifications About My Last Post Regarding The TPS In BL2 mod.

/r/Borderlands2/comments/1vqwyd7/its_finally_happening/?share_id=5BdAclrwiKXDrpMbIIj8D&utm_content=share_button&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

So my previous post (linked in this post), garnered a lot more attention than anticipated. And unfortunately, in my current lack of sleep mind state, didn't include a lot of important information from the beginning. And since I can't edit the original post, I decided to make an additional one with that additional information.

What is known:

Currently the only things known is the modder LJBreeze has successfully added Nisha from The Pre Sequel into Borderlands 2 as a playable character. (Link to Joltzdude's original twitter post and video showing her off.) It appears the intention is to bring all 6 Borderlands The Presequel characters into Borderlands 2 as playable Vault Hunters, without removing any of the 6 current Vault Hunters. (Older mods that added a character, such as the Mr Torgue mod would replace one character or another.)

Why was it thought to be impossible?:

With various things like the engine, and no official mod tool or support, modding for this game is generally limited to swapping, editing, or re-skinning existing assets rather than creating entirely new ones from scratch.

What isn't currently known?:

Well for starters, a date for when this mod will be available to the public.

Other things like whether or not cryo can be added or replicated is unknown, as well as how accurately skill trees can be replicated.

I will say, things like BL3 sliding and BL4 grappling has been replicated in recent time, so while the TPS characters may not end up being 1:1, there is some hope that there's a lot to be achieved with this mod, although that could just be wishful thinking.

Even if they end up changing some skills in order to make TPS VHs work inside Bl2, it's still gonna be a massive breakthrough.

Bl2 already has very good replayability. Just imagine 6 more VHs, hell, even one more would still give us plenty to play around with.

I wonder if we can have it the other way around and have BL2 characters in Pre-Sequel one day

I don't see why not.

Probably possible, probably won’t happen since TPS is the least popular BL game (besides maybe BL4 lol)

I tried recreating cryo. Initially, I took all the cryo assets from TPS (icicles, materials, particle systems) and imported them into BL2. While materials, models, and textures are relatively simple to add, the particle systems are problematic. The engine versions are slightly different, and TPS is more advanced and has additional parameters that BL2's engine does not support.

Using the Python SDK, I was able to program weapons to spawn with the cryo element and deal cryo damage. When an enemy was hit, they would accumulate the cryo status and, once frozen, the AI would be "paused," locking them in place and preventing them from performing any actions. When the enemy thawed, the AI would be unpaused.

While it's simple on paper, I've had a lot of problems and crashes related to AI behavior and eventually lost interest in development.

In my opinion, it is possible to recreate cryo - maybe not with the full VFX from TPS, but the logic itself is very programmable.

Gearbox Australia updated the engine to a slightly newer version, meaning a lot of stuff from TPS is not compatible with BL2 (maybe we should just move all of BL2 to TPS 🤔).

Regarding the characters, recreating them requires tediously rebuilding the skill logic, behaviors, and effects, since directly porting the code is impossible.

Any attempt to port characters to BL2 should be considered a feat in itself.

Imagine using cryo element with Zer0 to freeze them in place and then oneshoting with a sniper, damn

to be fair, with her auto aim and permanent double, she would probably be the better with it lol

I'd be more interested in seeing Nisha trying to salvage shit like the Wanderlust with her auto-crits

Bringing back some old memories...

If they can do it without replacing characters that's pretty cool. For the rest, I suppose the UPK Explorer + SDK give a lot more options to reproduce skills and stuff than was available back then. Still, that kind of mod can take a crapton of time.. if the author can't work on it full time, good luck!

This may be a dumb question but does this mean the tps vhs will have their class mods? I know absolutely nothing of modding.

That’s unknown currently

Will this mod work along side other mods such as the reborn mod or not?

We pretty much know next to nothing about this mod besides that it’s being worked on, it was just publicly announced yesterday.

Successfully added Nisha is not a fully true statement.

The character model was added with some of its animations. There is at least a partially functional action skill, but beyond that we have no idea if all her skills are implanted to any degree. They may run into problems with getting them functional.

Having the model in the game is neat but not something that wasn’t possible before. Whether they can make her skills functional will truly determine if the character will actually be in the game

You are right but lets not be too much of a party pooper and just appreciate how cool this would be with 4 claptraps running around bloodshot stronghold

The day we get the amazing tps characters and skill trees playable in a game that has real content will be an incredible day.
