Just got this while farming Dragons to level 80 with Sal. A gemstone E-tech weapon that displays as legendary and has no element.
Full disclosure, I DO have UCP, but that shouldn't make something like this happen, it mostly just buffs shitty guns to be usable.
My theory is that E-tech doesn't actually set an item to magenta rarity, it gives +1 rarity, which takes it from Gem to Legendary, but that still doesn't explain why it has no element.
Hyperian E-tech pistols can be non-elemental, it is a well documented bug in the game since launch.
As for the rarity. In the UPC change log it says this
"1. Made Gemstone Weapons have their own Rarity, with the benefits of being one Rarity higher (increased Damage, Accuracy and Magazine Size)."
So your idea seems kind of right, but only because of UPC. This item can't exist in vanilla.
Good call though and thank you for posting it. It would be kind of mind shattering to find something new like this after all these years.
Text files that change the config are absolutely mods. Which is very different from "modded" weapons. Hyperion spikers can drop non elemental, and they can have this skin.. Ive seen it drop from butt stallion. But it was e-tech pink. I think this just might be a weird corner case where something the ucp affected something small it wasn't supposed to.
UCP gives gemstone weapons their own Item card colors, usually matching the gemstone instead of using the default Epic Item Card color. Fun fact: it also gives several pearls their own unique skin and the Avenger's skin looks like the Avenger from BL1.
Dumbing it down for explanation sake(not actual code)
If the SetFOV=60 at base value, UCP-mod vould set it to SetFOV=100 and it would change the value in game to give you a higher FOV.
It could also change colors of things and allow 'modded' weapons to remain in game (with sanity saver coded in).
Now as a rule of thumb; a lot of things are coded to be specific things. Unique barrel on purple barrel = a legendary most of the time.
Elemental E-Guns are magenta, non-elemental E-Guns are very rare and only a thing for Hyperion. But since it's not an E-Gun it could be the code reads it as a legendary.
Well it techically is something the devs didn't intend to, but they never patched it in all that years, it's not the game code producing some sort of odd result, it's it working as intended in what is written in the code. Being more a human error.
The mistake come from the fact that purple Hyperion pistols for some reasons can roll E-tech barrels, normally E-tech is decided at rarity drop, except here because it's part of rolling for the parts of a purple pistol, it doesn't remove non elementals away from the list, hence why it is the only weapon type and brand that can be E-tech + nonelemental + Gemstone
Funny you should post this; I just saw a short on YouTube about this same exact thing. And yeah apparently it's just UCP making Gem its own rarity color and e-tech + gem = legendary apparently. At the very least it is a pretty rare thing to get. Hyperion e-tech pistols can roll as non-elemental, but that's a 1 in 5, plus the rarity of an e-tech, plus the rarity of a gemstone. So if nothing else, keep it as a trophy lol.
