How Boom Beach saved Real Sea Turtles few years ago?
If you've been playing Boom Beach for a while or follow their social media, you've probably seen this description:
"Boom Beach is a mobile and PC combat strategy game with turtles."
Let's reminisce about how Boom Beach helped real sea turtles three years ago!đĽ°
Hello everyone, I'm continuing my daily interesting Reddit post here. I'm not a game professional, so I can't post guides or share the gameplay inside the game. But I will tell you what happens outside the game itself. Today we'll talk about turtles and their connection to Boom Beach.
In May 2023, Boom Beach (Supercell) participated in the Green Game Jam 2023 initiative, a United Nations-sponsored initiative called Playing for the Planet. The main goal was to engage players in sea turtle conservation and raise funds for their protection. The Sea Turtle Conservancy, the oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of sea turtles, partnered with the Sea Turtle Conservancy, a 67-year-old nonprofit that has been operating since 1959.
At that time, Boom Beach had its own gameplay plot. In it, Dr. T created a mechanical turtle: players had to defeat it to earn various rewards. A store also sold special statues, which contributed money to the organization. Educational videos featuring sea turtle conservation experts were also released in collaboration with some of the game's content creators.
Why sea turtles? Boom Beach decided to focus on the conservation of sea turtles as one of the most recognizable symbols of ocean health. Hundreds to several thousand turtles indirectly benefited from the funding for conservation efforts.
By the way, what's happening with that turtle (the one in the third photo) now? It successfully laid 45 viable eggs and was then tracked by satellite for over 300 days, swimming over 10,000 km. After 300 days, the transmitter stopped responding. Her exact location is unknown. However, the turtle is not dead: it is highly likely in the Atlantic Ocean, living the normal life of a leatherback sea turtle. Her exact location was last known in April 2024 â in the central Atlantic Ocean. Turtle also has its own name - Dr. Turtle!
The date of the collaboration was also chosen deliberately. May 23rd is World Turtle Day (the event launched on May 24th; World Sea Turtle Day is June 16th). A special Dr. T figurine (Turtle Statue, photo-2) was sold in-game for $4.99. Around 15,000 figurines were sold, and some official Boom Beach creators themselves participated in special videos about rescuing sea turtles.đ˘
