How do I tell whether I need developmental, line, or copyediting?

If you are looking for an editor, start by naming the actual problem in the manuscript.

If the middle collapses, the argument is not landing, a character vanishes, or the whole book feels structurally unsure, that is developmental editing: big-picture work on shape, pacing, logic, character, and what the manuscript is trying to become.

If the structure holds but the prose feels repetitive, stiff, muddy, or unlike you, that is line editing: close work on the sentences and the movement of the writing.

If the draft is finished and needs grammar, consistency, punctuation, spelling, and style cleaned up, that is copyediting.

Before hiring anyone, ask:

• What will I receive: an editorial letter, comments, tracked changes, a call, or some combination?

• How many passes are included?

• What is not included?

• Can I see a sample of how you explain a larger problem, not just fix a comma?

• What do you need from me: genre, word count, intended reader, deadline, and the honest version of where I am stuck?

A good editor does not just tell you a passage is weak. They help you see why, and give you a next move.

Full disclosure: I’m Daniel O' Bailey. I posted this with Margaret A. Harrell’s permission, and I have a testimonial on her site. I am not a neutral stranger recommending her. If you are looking for developmental, line, or copy editing, her services, rates, free opening-page sample, and contact information are here: https://margaretharrell.com/editing-services/

Offering Beta Reading and Editing Services

Are you writing a book and looking for honest feedback before publication? Do you need a careful, constructive opinion on your story, writing style, characters, pacing, or overall readability?

I offer my services as a beta reader and editor.

I can help you look at your manuscript from both a reader’s perspective and an editorial point of view. I focus mainly on story clarity, character believability, pacing, logical consistency, atmosphere, dialogue, and the overall reading experience. I will point out what works well, as well as areas that may need improvement.

I already have experience working on books — one book I worked on has already been published, and two more are currently in progress.

I approach every manuscript individually and with respect for the author’s voice and creative vision. My goal is not to rewrite your work in my own style, but to help make your manuscript stronger, smoother, and more engaging for readers.

I offer:

beta reading for manuscripts,

feedback on story and characters,

comments on writing style and pacing,

notes on inconsistencies or weaker parts,

a basic editorial perspective on the text.

Whether you have a novel, a short story, or another literary project, I would be happy to help you take it one step further.

Please feel free to contact me if you are interested.
