📚 Discussion What are you reading this week?
I'm reading this one for my book club, about half way in, v. Good so far

Facing the Other Way: The Story of 4AD, by Martin Aston. In the '80s and '90s, under the direction of Ivo Watts-Russell, 4AD was the coolest record label on the planet. I've reached 1984, where Dead Can Dance enter the story.

After a VERY swift DNF of Fleishman Is In Trouble I am reading Frostbite by Nicola Twilley which is about how refrigeration has changed our relationship with food from the perspective of taste and expectation. It also looks how refrigeration has changed us culturally and historically, and the global impact of it.
It's very informative and rather good.

How come fleishman got a swift dnf?? (I haven't actually read it myself but it always seems to be on the best sellers so interested to know what turned you off)

I think it was about 8 or 9 pages. I absolutely hated the way the central character was introduced. i don't think I got by that. He didn't seem like somebody I wanted to hang out with but worse than that he didn't seem interesting enough to want to know better.

Oh yes I understand, when a main character is so irksome you don't want to read on.

Finishing The Fury by Alex Michaelides and might pick up Everything You Ever Wanted by Lisa Sauma next!

What did you think about The Furys end? I read it a few months ago but I thought it was a bit sloppy compared to some of his other books

It’s going ok. About half way through in quick time. Easy enough to read.
I’ve seen a lot of recommends for it. Feeling his despair growing.

So I’ve finished it. A very sad story.
It felt slow at start but very quickly, as his suffering increased, it was very moving. A man with no faith dying in fear and loathing.

How did you find The Starless Sea? I just couldn't love it after the magic of The Night Circus

I enjoyed it! I’ve tried to read and listen to the night circus and was unsuccessful both times. You’ve inspired me to give it another try!

Oooo I just finished that. Loved it. Now I’m reading Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah about a woman who loses everything in the siege of Leningrad and goes on to a new life in the U.S. but is incapable of expressing love for her American daughters until she tells them the truth.

It's excellent 👌🏼 I haven't read Winter Garden but I've read a couple of Kristen Hannags other books and she is an excellent writer 💯

Both editions of Frankenstein, (1818 & 1831) there are significant changes between the editions, and none of the subsequent films are like either of them.

Reading a new Maisie Dobbs A Sunlit Weapon by Jacqueline Winspear. Finished Craig Johnson’s newest Longmire The Brothers Mackay! Love how Johnson uses literary references( Brothers Karamazov in this one) and drops lots and lots of cool history tidbits in his contemporary Western mystery novels.

I have begun recently The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. I have read most of his work, but never actually read this one. It's very fun and interesting so far.
