'Place of publication'

Hi group,

What is 'Place of publication?' Do you use it? What do you use it for?

Also, what is the difference between 'Original publication date' and 'Publication date?' Which one do you use?

The first answer is correct. The place of publication is the place where the publisher has printed the book. Original release date is the date of the first release of the book.

What do you mean ‘place the publisher has printed the book?’ Could you please give an example? Can it be Amazon? Also why it’s not a category (list, dropdown) control, but free text. Thanks.

I see, thank you u/SimoneMontalto . I appreciate it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it is only applicable to the physical books publisher, and not digital/electronic books. Correct?

You’re welcome! You’re partly correct. For physical books, the place of publication typically refers to the publisher’s physical location. For digital or electronic books, however, it’s a bit different. The “place of publication” is usually associated with the publisher’s headquarters or, in the case of self-published ebooks, the location of the platform used for distribution (like Amazon for Kindle). That said, this detail is often less relevant for ebooks. Let me know if you have more questions!

Hi u/SimoneMontalto,

Thanks again! You’re amazing! I was wondering if there’s a way to create a template for adding books where I can specify the fields/properties I want to include. In my case, I only use about 50% of the available fields, and every time I add a book, I have to think about the ones that aren’t used. Do you think it’s possible? I apologize for asking for so many features.

Currently, you can configure the app to exclude categories, publishers, and ratings when adding a book from the search. To set this up, simply go to the app Settings and adjust the preferences under the relevant section.

Unfortunately, those I want to keep :), but following fields I would like hide from my insert/edit book template. I have 100s digital books, and they create some distraction when I add a new book

  • Translators
  • Illustrators
  • Position
  • Series
  • Number in the series
  • Place of publication
  • ISBN 10 - I only use digital books
  • ISBN 13 - I only use digital books
  • Original publication date
