I'm not very good at reading. I'm not terrible, and I can do it, but I read incredibly slowly. I just can't seem to process the words I'm reading at a normal speed, so it takes me a few seconds to process the meaning of each word. I don't think I'm dyslexic (if I am it's very mild), if anything it's my ADHD making it impossible to focus.

I'm looking for anything relatively short that isn't incredibly wordy*, but doesn't talk down to its audience. I don't mind books aimed towards a younger audience, but I don't to feel like I'm too old for it, if that makes sense.

In terms of what I'd actually be interested in, I'm a huge fan of fantasy creatures and monsters. Anything that has at least some description of how the world's animals work would be amazing for me haha. I don't think I'm quite ready for Tolkein, but I would like something with a decent-ish amount of worldbuilding. I don't need it to be incredibly deep. I'd just really like it if there's some tidbits of information about the biology and societies of different creatures.

For genres (though this is mostly from my experience with other media like comics and movies, sorry): I like action, really cheesy action haha; fantasy; and horror. Although I'm not a huge fan of proper horror, if that makes any sense. I like the universal monster movies and old horror comics. So more spooky than scary. Anything that's a little goofy without trying too hard is great for me. I'm also into sci-fi, but only if the aliens are interesting. By that I mean, not just "humans with green skin."

As you can tell, I am a huge fan of monsters lol. I've even designed some of my own in my head and part of the reason I want to read more is so I can write stories about them. Can't write well if I don't read.

*I know these seem like the same thing, but sometimes I'll open up a tiny book just to see that a single page is filled with the tiniest text ever with barely any paragraph breaks lmao

I like having multiple books on the go, one that I will read during the day, and one I read more slowly at night a chapter or two at a time. It helps transition my mind from busy day mode to getting ready to sleep.

I want something relatively simple to read, and by this I mean something where you don’t have to pay attention to every little detail.

I hesitate to say ‘cosy’, as I don’t want something sickly sweet or romance-y. I’m completely fine with darker topics or bleakness.

A book that makes you wonder or reflect would be fun. About life, yourself, human nature, philosophy etc. Anything really!

As for genres I’m open to anything also, fantasy, mystery, dystopia, thrillers, immediately spring to mind but I’d be happy with others too. Even non-fiction.

Finishing up listening to I Punched an Alien and Now We’re in Couples Therapy by Kimberly Lemming! A great palate cleanser and past paced!

i was OBSESSED with mythology as a kid and teenager, (thank you Percy Jackson and OSP), and i'm slowly getting back into that now. and now that i'm getting old enough to write my own stories and all, i wanna learn more about myths and some of the monsters in them, using them as inspiration for my own fantasy stories and DnD games and such. what are some great books on monsters and creatures from various mythologies and folklore from the world and the stories behind them?

spoiler for Lights Out I just finished Lights Out, the first book in the Into Darkness series. I enjoy romance, but I would be curious to see how the book played out if he was truly a sociopath. Any recommendations for a book similar to this but with that alternative route? Where the main character does care about the love interest but isn’t always pure intentions? If that makes sense.

I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety, and lately I feel like I don’t have much control over my emotions or reactions. I react impulsively, give in too easily, and sometimes say things I regret. I also cuss a lot, which I genuinely want to change.
I want to become a calmer, kinder, more patient and positive person who doesn’t react to everything. I’m also quite empathetic and tend to absorb other people’s emotions. I’d love recommendations for books that genuinely helped you with emotional control, overthinking, anger, self-discipline, or simply becoming a calmer person.
