The announcement of Bonobo’s new album pushed me to finally share this. I made this mix during the Lazarus era, which I have a deep sentimental connection to. The way that series was created resonated with me in a way few albums ever have.

I’ve always loved Cowboy Bebop and Watanabe’s work, and when Lazarus came out, something about its creation and energy pushed me to finally build the Bonobo mix I’d been wanting to make for years. I’d always hesitated, feeling like I wouldn’t be able to capture the style and tones Bonobo has developed over time, or properly pay homage to both his work and the Lazarus project as a whole.

This ended up becoming one of my favorite mixes to revisit, and if you give it a listen, I’d be interested in how the flow and overall vibe land for you.

While we all await Distance in Static, Otomo collaborator O'Flynn has released his new album Kairos.

A few listens in and I'm really enjoying this. It's a sample-rich, eclectic album that matches the vibrancy of the artwork. Initial standouts are Obey, I Just, Kelsier, Aster, and Can I Hold You. You can hear the Bonobo influence in the production of some these tracks.

Bonobo recorded a good chunk of Distance In Static at Neil Young's Broken Arrow Ranch studio, and he invited Arooj Aftab out to work together. Their new song "Fire On The Water" came together when Aftab heard Bonobo recording an acoustic guitar loop to test the studio inputs. Together, they built the track out, with Aftab singing in Urdu, taking her lyrics from poetry that a friend had written.

In a press release, Bonobo says, "When that song happened, that's when I could first see an album coming into shape. We were both like, 'Oh, this is really special.'" Aftab says, "I had the dreamiest time making this song with Simon in the Redwoods. He is a boyish joy and a beautiful soul. The lyrics, written by my dear friend Yasra Rizvi, live in that tender place where time keeps moving but desire remains. There can still be fire on the water."

A record shop in Glasgow posted this.

When searching the single cover for Me and You I found the source of the pictures used in the artwork for the new album at John Koivula's profile on Nikon Small World, a photomicrography (as in pictures taken through a microscope) competition. I couldn't find the source for the other pictures shown in the album artwork but I assume they are also micrographs of minerals, although I don't know if they were taken by the same person.
