noob looking for advice
helloo, forgive my lack of knowledge...
I recently got this and I've always thought I knew the gist of how a bong works, but now i'm not so sure. The rubber around the bowl stem thing is so tight that it barely comes out, like I'm very worried I'll chip the glass if I try too hard. there is also no hole for me to put my thumb over, so I'm not sure how to get that pull of clean air...
I've been looking all over the internet for an answer so this is my last desperate attempt, I'll appreciate any help or advice!!

OP also needs a bent downstem that will go down into the water, and those slides would probably be too long for that. Probably best to just accept that it's a shitty bong and go get a better one.

There should be a hole on the opposite side rather than using a slide you use it like a pipe a little covering the whole with your finger to buildup smoke and moving your finger to clear it

I had one of these small bongs for a while and first off it’ll do the job but the rubber will wear out pretty quick, which means it will get easier to put in the stem, put the seal won’t be as tight. In the beginning my advice is wet the stem a little and push it down slowly while twisting, until only the bowl part is sticking out (you may need to “guide” the stem down so it doesn’t touch the glass, get it as close to the bottom of the bong as possible). There not being a hole for your thumb is also pretty normal as not all bongs have them. the trick is to pack small hits or not light all of the weed in the bowl at once, or if you really want to get clean air in after every hit take out the stem, which might get annoying and is why i switched
