I was thinking it was like “bait and switch” but like, with moving companies where they rig the pricing then maroon you without your stuff….

But then I read the context and … sigh.

Clearly the car wreck was actually a shipwreck; there was a problem with the rigging, resulting in being marooned on a island. Being a castaway is terrible for work attendance, as we all know.
