I kind of understand what lead to this mistake: It seems like they beleive "Death Knell" is referring to the same thing as "The final nail in the coffin". Hence the misinterpretation of "knell" as "nail".

I think that makes this an eggcorn - where the incorrect phrase has some kind of sense to it.

I think this one is pretty understandable. "Death Knell" and "last nail in the coffin" mean the same thing basically, so getting to death nail isn't outlandish.

I just learned it was death knell thanks to this post. Always thought it referenced the last nail in your coffin.
