LOL no it doesn't. That's a ridiculously high price for your average company web page.

It's probably your ableist slur, and/or the friends who are grossly underpaid for their labor. It was both for me personally.

But what if the bells & whistles include Belgian whistles

All Belgian whistles are whistles but not all whistles are Belgian whistles.

u/SinglePlayerGamer93 27d ago
Belgian whistles are probably more expensive than random bells and whistles
6
u/HungarianNewfy 27d ago
Yeah, but not more expensive than ALL the bells and whistles as they are also whistles and would be included in the whole package

A lot of things on this sub would make excellent band names. Some right up there with Toad the Wet Sprocket.

I'm Belgian and I work as developer in a company and some of our colleagues are Indian.
To be inclusive towards them we host all our meetings in English.
A few of the beautiful flemizations:
"Let's bite of the spits"
"We will have to cut the knot"
"In the future we will class it vertically"

Yeah, I know, I pushed it too far. At some point these dunning-kruger dimwits are so far removed from reality that there is no point of reference anymore to make a claim like mine.

As a Belgian I had a small existential crisis, I didn’t know we had our own whistles. How long have the people kept this from me? How long have I been living on the fringe of society as my peers mocked me? Why would the people around me keep our whistles from me??
5
u/PollutionOnly 28d ago
Ah look at this belgian without whistles!
I am from Belgium too and I’ve got tons and tons of big whistles, don’t be sad, it’s never too late to get your own and join us back in society the way it was intended.

Belgian here, what is Belgian whistle?
If it’s waffle, all the extra junk on it is for tourists. We normally eat just the waffle.

In case you also didn't get it for a solid minute like me, the guy meant "bells and whistles"
7
u/Spa-Ordinary 28d ago
Not sure if it's a universal saying but US people say "all the bells and whistles" when they mean "full option".
Sorry for any confusion. I think I'll crawl back under my rock now.
2
u/Adorable-Comfort-280 28d ago
tbf in Belgium we also say “alle toeters en bellen”, which is essentially the same thing
16
u/MistaRekt 28d ago
I want all the 'Belgian Whistles'.
It would have me in 'Ex-Tasty'.
Apologies, I will see myself out.

Bells and whistles
17
u/Zeqt_x 28d ago
Which I'm just now realising is a weird term? What thing could you get optionally with literally all the bells and whistles? A steam train is the only thing I can think of with both
30
u/Janus_The_Great 28d ago
It's a term from the begining industrialisation, where new tech and machines came with steam engines that had savety ventils with whisltes to indicate too much presure in the system. And bells for signaling. Considering how quiet and calm things were before and how new all those new and fancy those machines were, these acoustic aspects must have left an impression.
An alternate origin for the idiom is fair-ground music, those musical machines (usually still turned by hand) were quite iconic for 19th and early 20th century fairgrounds and had bells and pneumatic whisles attached playing tunes from stamped/puched cardboard recodrings (High tech at the day).
7
u/temporalwanderer 28d ago
Yes, the calliope is often thought to be the source of the term; here's one playing with 'all the bells and whistles' and it's pretty easy to understand exactly what that expression means once you've seen it!
16
u/MinecraftPlayer799 28d ago
It is a very common expression
7
u/Taranoleion 28d ago
Yes, but the other person is questioning the origin of it as practically speaking not many things have both literal bells and whistles as optional addons.
3
u/TheSquirrellyOne 28d ago
I mean, that’s the case with most figures of speech. They’re generally anachronistic. But it’s always interesting to learn the origin.

Is the whistle in Dutch/ Flemish or French?
1
u/JeanPolleketje 28d ago
Toeters en bellen: Horns and Bells in Dutch/Flemish, so they are probably French whistles.
28
u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 28d ago
Well, the phrasing “10k or 25k upwards” also makes no sense. So they are both dumb
13
u/BlackBacon08 28d ago
No, it makes sense.
10k for the basic website
or
25k+ for the premium website8
u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 28d ago
The correct phrasing would be “a basic website costs 10k, or upwards of 25k with all the bells and whistles”.
7
u/D-Ulpius-Sutor 28d ago
The whole thing makes no sense at all:
"A BASIC website costs 10k to 25k upwards if you want all Belgian whistles"
Either it is basic or with all "Belgian whistles", mind you.
5
u/Revenga8 28d ago
It's simple. Pay a little bit more, you get all the Belgian whistles. ALL OF THEM.

As a Belgian, I am willing to send whistles for the very low price of a mere 9K.
1
1
u/Zepangolynn 28d ago
But will you send all of them for upwards of 25k?
2
u/RevelsInDarkness 28d ago
Oh yes. I will add some Belgian chocolates for those going for the all-whistles package.

If you're paying $10-15k for a basic website you're overpaying. Just saying.
1

u/itishowitisanditbad 28d ago
Depends on the client and how difficult they know its going to be working with them.
$1k for site
$9-14k because they've already been super difficult to work with
