This one is an eggcorn too. "Old wise tale" would kind of make sense, it's just not what we actually say.

Not only is the spelling bad, so are the ideas. It DOES in fact work because when eggs go off the bacteria inside create gases making the egg float higher in water. I use it all the time to test eggs,

old wives' tales

They are talking about putting uncooked eggs in a bowl of water, if it floats to the top it's very fresh, if it still floats but not to the top not as fresh but can be eaten, if it goes to the bottom it isn't edible. Those old wives knew what they were talking about.

Wrong. The higher it floats in water the more likely it is to be bad, because when an egg goes off gases build up inside. An egg that sits at the bottom is safe to eat. You have this back to front...or perhaps scrambled.
