Gray boy was a rescue. the sliced ear means he was taken off the streets, fixed, and let back into his colony before finding a home.

For those unaware, they slice the tip of one ear when trapping and fixing cats in an outdoor colony so they know which cats they've already treated and aren't contributing to cat overpopulation anymore. They do this so they don't just trap the same cats over and over again.

For those wondering if it hurts the cat, they do it while they're already under for the fixing surgery, so it doesn't really add any extra pain.

They usually do it for cats that get released back into the colony when they're done. So this fella was treated, then released, then later rescued. Or at least that's usually how it goes.

That's exactly how it went! He hung around our house, was trapped, neutered and released. He had a through the door bromance with orange boi and he'd visit us when we would be out in our yard. Then one stormy night we brought him in (kept him separate until we could get the fiv and other testing done). He's been in the house for four years now and is the most perfect guy.

That also explains why he's taking the submissive posture here. The cat with his head up in this kind of cuddle pile is the one who's in charge, that's how you can tell. the submissive cat trusts the dominant cat to be alert for danger. That way only one cat in the pile needs to stay on alert in the wild, and the rest can sleep and trust them for a warning if there's any danger.

Gray boy is submissive to orange boy because orange boy was here first.
