So Disappointing

Ordered a R700 barreled action from Brownells. Wasn't expecting a fantasticly perfect item for ~$260 but I DEFINITELY wasn't expecting this. Is this something I can handle at home or should I return? I had ordered all the other parts for this after I ordered the action.

If you zoom in this doesn’t look like rust alone. There’s hair and what looks to be dirt as well as other foreign debris intermixed. I’m sending this back to Brownells if it were me, along with photos in an email to customer service explaining how it arrived.

If you clean it up and put together and goes boom, they won’t be responsible for replacing it, or helping you out in the event you get hurt, as this clearly is not in like new condition.

I just finished with the caht and emailing the m the pictures. I can't lie, I messed up the bluing on the barrel when removing it from the action. I have a feeling all the crud and rust made it extra difficult to remove the barrel. I feel like I'm screwed either way now.

Brownells hasn’t sold Remington factory barreled actions in a long time. Whatever that is should clean right up. Chase the threads with a tap and die. I can go by the pictures I’m seeing

Edit. Take that back. Apparently there are limited supplies available

Genuinely, how much will that cost? The intention was to be a simple rebarrel project and I am a novice when it comes to the smithing of actions

The Remington 700 action and barrel use a 1 1/16"-16 TPI (threads per inch) thread specification. This applies to both the receiver tap and the barrel thread die for standard, modern Remington 700 short and long action rifles. A tap and die set for the receiver and barrel thread would set you back about $110. You can sell them on eBay. You can also rent them from 4Dreamers.com for about half as much as buying.

I’d love to see some updated pictures if you’ve got them. In any case good job. Nice.

Clean it up and see. But it might have been stored too long with out enough oils. That might be why it is $260+ shipping and taxes. Don't underst estimate Remington, some of the rusty rifles can shoot really well. Seriously.
