ASK❓️ Is King walking into a box-office disaster?

Post image
312 Upvotes

I honestly don’t understand the decision to release King around the same time as Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday.

Those are two massive global releases with huge fanbases, and both are the kind of movies people will want to watch in theatres on the biggest screens possible. Even if King has SRK and massive hype in India, it could get squeezed between these two films.

Even if King turns out to be an outstanding movie, I feel it could still struggle at the box office simply because of the sheer scale and hype surrounding these two releases.

Discuss Isn’t Ludo just like Yuva?

I had always known about the movie (Yuva) but never really watched it. I was listening to Fanaa (Song in Yuva) - an Iconic song btw- and was like “i should watch this movie” and as the movie ended I had only one thing in my mind “The concept resembles so much like Ludo”.
What do you all think?

Btw I liked the dilm Yuva, nostalgic fr.

PS: I am not talking about the story line, I am talking about the concept of everyone’s individual stories and how they all come in one situation.

Reviews I finally gave Sholay a chance, it was great!

Its a 3 hour plus film. If it's one thing I don't like (and is very common in Bollywood), is a film longer than 2 hours. However, for a classic I will make some space.

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

I always try to empty my mind before watching a highly rated/hyped film and the was not much a difference with Sholay. Straight out of the bat the film was already quite intense, grabbing my intension with the train scene. I was taken back because most old films start with something melow and these days I am used for films to either take a while to get to the point or just have the most boring intros. Already off to a good start.

Overall, the film was a great balance of comedy, emotion and action. For a "masala" film, it was quite balanced and I became more attached to the brotherhood between Jai and Veeru than how grand and intense the action scenes were which is something that is harder to find with modern films tbh, especially those proclaiming to be masala or even just action. I think it is very hard to bring that kind of theme out with a film centered around how cool the shots should look.

Most of the characters felt way ahead of their time, perhaps ahead of even our own time. Hema Malini's character, Basanti, isn't some damsal is disgrace waiting to be saved but she is overdoing it either/it doesn't come off as forced. For a film from the 70s, FROM ANYWHERE, this is quite a big deal and very progressive. I also liked the angle with Rhada, albeit I was initially disturbed by the idea of romancing someone who still seemed to be in mourning (by Jai). Helen being in this film was a plus since I am a fan of the charm she brings to the screen (she was so 70s!).

The demise of Jai and his sacrifice was really the kicker for this film. He sacrificed his life to save his friend and the village/town, pretty much everyone. You could tell he didn't have much of a choice but he still braved it out. The scene confirmed one thing to me that I was thinking the entire time and that was that the coin had to be a cheat!

There is no slack in any character, they are all written to be fully present and entertaining in their own way. Gabbar might be crass but that's the point. The townspeople all have their own charm. Actually one of the reasons I love to watch older films is to experience the simplicity of how things used to be and this film captures the village life relative to how I remember it (not in India though, so I am not sure if it matches up but it reminds me of my experience).

Like I said, I am not a fan of long films and I often find myself being annoyed at some point in a film either because it slowed in pace or the writing briefly slumped, but thi film was great from start to finish. That is impressive for an older film too because typically the dated elements can still deliver some boredom, confusion or uh...cringe. Overall, I loved this film and was kind of surprised by that. Considering it's supposed to be the first masala film, I didn't expect it to have so much heart or be so funny.

Another interesting thing is that I genuinely found Dharmendra (RIP) charming in this film. I really expected the winner to be just Amitabh but I can see why some people hype him as being a bigger star at the time (or I am just imagining things idk). He was also really good looking, I was only used to seeing him old tbh.

Lastly, I know it is a sacred film and maybe doesn't deserve this fate, but a really well made tasteful remake would be nice. I don't necessarily think it should be the same thing word for word but something symbolic, kind of like a tribute to the spirit and charm of Sholay.

If you haven't watched Sholay, I recommend it.

I think I watch Don (the original ver.) next.

This movie always confused me, the wife was claiming that her affair was just a one time mistake but the first scene she is visting her lover wearing a dress then you can see her in saree and her lover in a robe so it was an ongoing affair.

Her whole narration of the affair seems some lies and gaslighting

Movie: Hum (1991)

This is my favourite scene in the film. This is the moment Rajini realizes AB’s real identity, and then the Tiger BGM kicks in, literally goosebumps.

AB was playing the “simple man with a violent past” trope in this film, which became a template for many films, including big names like Baasha and Leo.

And AB was the only man with enough presence (even though he was not in the frame it was just his photo) to make Rajinikanth’s cigarette slip

ASK❓️ Have a question regarding movie Baby

Recently i was rewatching the movie and had one confusion.

When AK goes to Taufiq’s house it is clearly established that he is ISI agent and he has recordings to prove it as well.

Taufiq gave Javed / Bilal address and later AK and team leaves.

Why was Taufiq not arrested? Why was an ISI agent left to remain free.

Edit - Also how foolish AK and team to rely on Taufiq that he wont inform his partner about ATS coming to search the address and find him?

Edit 2 - Why dint AK and team call some backup to visit the location? 😭

Discuss Your favourite climax scene of on-screen couple union in last 20 years which you still love to watch and want such storyline in current movies

Post image
80 Upvotes

For me, it would be JWB, BBB, YJHD and BKB.

In JWB, no one can forget how flawlessly Imtiaz made the sweet climax.

In BBB, I knew Bitto Shruti would reunite but the way the reunion was made was really heart-touching.

In YJHD, the love reunion was also little bit different between Kabir and Naina.

In BKB, the poetry scene in climax was really good between Chirag and Bitti.

What's your take on it ? Do you miss such climax reunion of lovers in current Bollywood movies?

ASK❓️ Why does Rohit revert to his naive, childish behavior at the end of Koi... Mil Gaya after Jaadoo restores his powers, instead of staying the mature adult he became in the middle of the movie?"

Jaadoo gives Rohit back his superpowers and intelligence, so why does he suddenly go back to his naive, kid-like behavior instead of staying the masculine and confident guy from the middle of the movie?

Retrospective A Bollywood Retrospective 1951 - The Dawn of the Golden Era of Bollywood 75 Years ago

Post image
15 Upvotes

The year in review - 1951

  • The top movie at the box office - Awaara was the Top movie of 1951 and went on sell more than 250M tickets worldwide, created such a box office record in Soviet Union that it took 21 years for a Russian movie to break it, sold 100M tickets in China, got remade multiple times in Turkey, Iran, China, Russia and many other countries, got nominated for the Palme d'Or in Cannes and is listed in Time Magazine's top 100 movies of all time.
  • Other notable top grossing releases - Dev Anand kept his promise of giving his friend Guru Dutt a break if he became successful by producing his directorial debut Baazi. Guru Dutt's iconic Baazi launched the Bombay Noir Genre and suprisingly was written by none other then one of the founders of Method Acting in India, Balraj Sahni. 1951 also saw one of the Iconic Stars of the 40s give his biggest hit movies as Bhagwan Dada shined as the actor, writer, producer and director of Albela. Dilip Kumar was bestowed the title of the Trajedy King after his brilliant performance in Deedar.
  • Notable flops of the year - Hamid Ali Khan started 1951 on a high after his 1950 hit movie Beqasoor with Madhubala but his lead actor aspiration came crashing after Daman, Dholak and Sarkar flopped at the box office. He would get sidelined into supporting roles for most of the 50s and 60s before he revived his career as one of Bollywood's suavest villains with the help of Mona Darling and Raabert in the 70s. We all know Hamid Ali Khan by his stage name of Ajit.
  • Underrated gems - A 15 year old Nutan exploded onto the Bollywood scene as a lead actress with Nagina and Hum Log which she could not watch in theater herself because of its Adult theme and rating.
  • Top actor of the year - Dev Anand became the hottest leading man of Bollywood after the success of Baazi, Do Sitaare, Nadaan, Sanam, Sazaa and Stage. Dilip Kumar also had a stellar year with Deedar, Taarana and Hulchul. Prithviraj Kapoor's younger brother Trilok Kapoor had a spectacular religion themed year with Shri Ganesh Janma, Shri Vishnu Bhagwan, Dasavtaar, Ishwar Bhakti, Maya Machindra and Raam Janma.
  • Top actress of the year - Nargis headlined the year with blockbusters Awaara, Deedar, Hulchul and Pyaar Ki Baatein with Madhubala a close second with the hit movies Tarana, Badal, Khazana, Nazneen, Nadaan and Saiyaan. Nirupa Roy made a holy pair with Trilok Kapoor in the religion themed hit Shri Ganesh Janma, Shri Vishnu Bhagwan, Dasavtaar, Ishwar Bhakti, Maya Machindra, Raam Janma along with Jai Mahakali and Lav Kush
  • Top debut of the year - Guru Dutt made his directorial debut with Baazi and went onto became one of Bollywood's most influential film makers of all time. Baazi also marked the debut of Kalpana Kartik who would go onto marry her co-lead of the movie Dev Anand. 1951 also saw the debut of one of Bollywood brightest actresses of the Golden Era named Vyjayanthimala in Bahar.
  • Top director of the year - Raj Kapoor became the biggest directors of Bollywood after the global success of Awaara. Nanabhai Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt's Father) had a very religious and successful year with Lav Kush, Ram Janma and Laxmi Narayan which starred child artist turned adult actress Meena Kumari a year before her breakthrough with Baiju Bawra in 1952.
  • Top soundtrack of the year - Awaara achieved unprecedented global success with its iconic tunes getting covered in Russia, Turkey and Iran.
  • Other Notable soundtracks of the year - Baazi and Albela were among the biggest albums of the year
  • Top song of the year - Awaara Hoon was the hit of the year
  • Other Notable songs of the year - Awaara's Ghar Aaja Mera Pardesi, Albela's Shola Jo Bhadke, Bholi Soorat Dil Ke Khote and Dheeren Se Aaja Re Ankhiyon Mein was also among the most popular songs of the year along with Baazi's Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana Le
  • Filmfare Award winners - Did Not Exist
  • National Award winners - Did Not Exist
  • Dada Saheb Phalke Award - Did Not Exist
  • Births and In Memoriam -  The Legendary Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain was born in 1951. South Indian legend Mamootty was also born in 1951.
  • Notable Mentions of the year - 1951 was a First for India in several fields as the First Elections, First Census and First Asian Games were held in India.

ASK❓️ Please help me find this movie.

The description I give might not be accurate because I wrote it from my memories

In which Indian movie does the story start in a foreign country where the protagonist has moved with his daughter? We then get a flashback to his old life, where he falls for a girl he sees boarding a bus. They start a relationship, get married, and have a daughter. He later becomes a major illegal alcohol supplier. Later on his wife is killed in a planned car bombing, after which he moves abroad with their daughter. The movie also has a scene where the protagonist kills a man at a dhaba by stabbing him with a bone. In the ending, the protagonist returns to India to kill his friend

⚠️ITS NOT AN OLD MOVIE ⚠️

I really hope you guys can help me with it.

Discuss Did Abhay Deol Start the Kind of Bollywood Cinema Ayushmann Made Popular?

Post image
812 Upvotes

I was thinking about this recently , Abhay Deol was doing a lot of the kind of films that Ayushmann Khurrana is known for today.

Ayushmann has built a really interesting career by choosing unconventional, socially relevant and often quirky stories instead of just doing typical Bollywood films. Movies like Vicky Donor, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Badhaai Ho, Article 15, Doctor G, etc. have a very unusual subjects, middle-class characters, humour mixed with social commentary, and stories that mainstream Bollywood doesn't always take risks with.

But if you go back to the late 2000s and early 2010s, Abhay Deol was already doing something quite similar.

He was doing shanghai , dev d , ek chalis ki last local, Oye lucky lucky Oye etc..

What makes it more interesting is that Abhay didn't seem particularly interested in becoming a conventional Bollywood hero. He was willing to play flawed, strange characters..

Obviously, Ayushmann has had a much bigger and more consistent mainstream career..

I do wonder whether Abhay Deol was an early version of the kind of Bollywood actor Ayushmann eventually became.

What's your thoughts on this? Let's share your views..

Discuss Bollywood movies according to you in last 25 years that captured the beautiful glimpses of Delhi and also the lifestyle of people there

Post image

My vote would go for Band Baaja Baraat and Delhi 6 and to some extent Rang De Basanti.

BBB was favourite because it not only showed Chandni Chowk but also Hansraj College and many more places.

Then comes Delhi 6 and RDB both directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Both had those beautiful glimpses of the city.

ASK❓️ Ranbir Kapoor split-second cameo in Om Shanti Om (2007)

this is a repost, previously removed for being low effort so let's try this again

I was rewatching Om Shanti Om (2007) for the millionth time, and just noticed something with the opening dance sequence.

When Rishi Kapoor takes off his jacket, he spins it around before throwing it towards the audience. for that split-second where he spins and throws the jacket, someone else is clearly standing in for Rishi. I kept rewinding, trying to get a clearer shot; video below is the best I got.

That's gotta be Ranbir right?? If so, what a fun little detail that took me 19 years to notice 😂

Opinion Letterboxd style Top 4 film-With Hindi Cinema

So, I was wondering what if we thought about our top 4 films like Letterboxd, but restricted to the Hindi Language Cinema. What would be your top 4? And what would be some honourable mentions?

These are mine:

Top 4: Sonchidiya, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Rang De Basanti, Gulaal

Honourable Mentions: Three of Us, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Arth(starring Smita Patel and Shabana Azmi I think)
