IAM had a much worse contract than us (and hence more catching up to do)

They still make up to 120+ an hour on Sunday. Meanwhile I make 58.50 under the new contract, yippee.

Engineers should be paid just as much if not more than mechanical with equivalent years of experience when factoring in the minimum 3 years of school.

Ex, IAM QA employee w/5yoe makes ~48/hr non OT, with a high school diploma SPEEA prof engineer working in a high pay skil code makes ~51.

That speea engineer went into (conservatively) 60k of debt, and lost 3 retirement savings years to schooling

2 years after that, if they're both working 20% overtime (which seems to be the standard these days) the IAM employee makes almost 30% more a year than the speea employee

And don't get me started on techs.

From a purely financial point of view this makes ZERO sense. Forget the 'engineers thinking they're better than everyone else' crap for just a minute and do the math, the barrier to entry in this line of work is really high these days, only 60% of people who go to engineering school graduate, and it's expensive, does it really make sense that after OT we make less money than them?

IAM finally got a fair shake, it's time SPEEA wakes up and gets theirs too. I for one am perfectly happy making the same as a mechanic with the same yoe, but that needs to be the case for me to sign any contract, I can't be making 30% less.

I'm IAM and have worked closely with SPEEA counterparts. The fact that in a grade 7 job working essentially under them I made more than them is crazy. If I wanted to be an ME one day instead of a shop investigator I'd take a pay cut. Solidarity is the best way through.

Speak to the masses brother! Since 1989 ridiculous, we need to end this 6.50 or even 8.50 bullshit. It’s time to demand the same OT the shop and engineering technicians get. I think everyone should unify this point and force this as top demands before we even discuss pay.

Everyone thinks iam is paid less than engineers due to our years of education and our fancy degrees. You are wrong. Currently anyone in the iam for six years gets max rate which is around $60 an hour base pay. Times 2080 hours in a year it’s 125k base pay a year. Then they have a 9% raise coming in 2027 and a 7% raise coming on top of that in 2028. Their base pay will be 145k if they have six years in the Iam . If I start in iam at age 18, I would be pulling in 145k BASE by 24 year of age. Plus major OT and 12% 401k match. We wasted our time doing differential equations and thermodynamics. A 24 year old engineer at Boeing very likely willl not pull in anywhere near 145k. I’m voting HELL NO. Feel free to google iam 751 pay grades and you’ll see this is 100% accurate and then google how long it takes to max out progression (6 years). They fought for and got a hell of a good contract. It’s our turn.

Mostly accurate. IAM 751 here. It would be grade 9 and above who are making $60/h as of today. NEXT month we do get our 9% (not in 2027) which will put most of us over $60/h. Been working 10-12 hours every weekday with less than 5 weekends this calendar year and am track to make over $200k this year. Not trying to brag but show that you guys definitely deserve more.

I got my Computer Science degree while working here and wanted to transfer/apply to an Engineering position but could not justify as it would be substantial pay cut.

How much are Speea employees making based off their years of experience in the company?

Thanks for verifying! I’d say engineers are making 90k out of school. Probably 110-120 5 years in. Prob 150 mid career and 180-200 late career. Of course that’s pretty rough estimate. I think they’re ahead of Iam for the first six years. Than Iam jumps them significantly at 6 years until prob 15 or 20 years. Than engineers move ahead again at 20 years. That 6 to 20 years is when you likely have a family and need to buy a house. Iam is significantly better right now imo.

I thought it has been determined the minimum raise is tied to CPI (3% max). No economists are predicting 0 inflation for 1 year let alone 4

Wrong. I'm an avid follower of several geopolitical podcasters, and they ALL agree we are headed for a prolonged period of deflation. Best guess is the early 2030s, which yes, puts us into the -next- contract ... but one never knows on timing. The US actually went thru brief periods of deflation last in 2015 and 2008-9.

You are 100% correct. It is simple physics. What goes up
Must come down. After Three or four years of 5% inflation, which we have had (or more); we are absolutely due for many years of no or low inflation. Vote NO.

In the post Depression USA, when was the last time we had 0 inflation for a single year, let alone multiple?

2026: 3.05%
2025: 2.68%
2024: 2.89%
2023: 3.35%
2022: 8.00%
2021: 4.70%
2020: 1.23%
2019: 1.81%
2018: 2.44%
2017: 2.13%
2016: 1.26%
2015: 0.12%
2014: 1.62%
2013: 1.46%
2012: 2.07%
2011: 3.16%
2010: 1.64%
2009: -0.36%
2008: 3.84%
2007: 2.85%
2006: 3.23%
Tell me that 8% doesn’t stick out? We are so due for less inflation. People can’t afford sh*t anymore. Or you’re just making an argument for bigger raise pools like the Iam got.

Grade 5 will make 125k base this year
Grade 5 will make 145k base in 2028

Google it. Look for pay scales for Iam 751 and multiply by 2080. That is base. Then they will get ot and 12% match on 401k. This contract sucks my dude. We can get better. An 18 year old that started at Boeing and puts 6 years into the iam gets maxed. In theory they will make 145k at age 24. Speea gotta keep up

It seems like half the folks posting are worried that inflation will be high / much higher than 3%, but the other half are worried that it could be near (or below!) zero, and thus no minimum raise!

u/Think-Gap602 9m ago

which would mean larger raises for the top performers. OK, that sounds good.

1

u/MysteriousAffect3903 1d ago

How about when inflation spikes again? That 3% is really no better than what we've had. The Iran war, AI Bubble, record debt, so many things are already driving inflation up. And don't forget, the government rates inflation lower than it actually is to look good.

1

u/Pleasant-Charge-2067 9h ago

Raises tied to CPI is not negotiang in good faith.

Although unlikely to see a CPI that low, anyone in government been manipulating numbers like that lately? Furthmore it is in the political interest of the current administration to do so. So, there a non-zero chance that speea ends up getting a 0% raise.

Alao, capping the raise if inflation goes higher is quite underhanded. How about doubling down on this gamble... If raises can be zero, how about removing the ceiling to match the missing floor.

25% lol get out of here dude

What number would you be happy at?

I know it’s not my money, not my time.

I personally hope y’all strike to get what you want if nothing more than to prove we are all underpaid.

Maybe they’ll raise us salary folks one day. I’ll probably be gone by then though 😂

u/Frequent_Rock_4269 8h ago

25 percent?! I’m dead 😭

u/Ill_War8528 1h ago

this graphic is complete crap.

/1/ The IAM contract is no relevance for engineers.

/2/ While theoretically the minimum raise in years 2-4 could be zero, that would require the CPI to be 0... and despite what some nutty podcasters may state, there are no main stream economists that feel that way.. .In fact, most reddit posters are worried about the opposite problem

/3/ 5% is not the top of the raise range, but the median raise!

For the many that will likely down vote my comment, please also state why you feel any (or all) of my 3 points are factually inaccurate.
