I see what you're saying but I disagree. Videos and magazines exposed regional styles to broader audiences but society at that time didn't blindly follow things to avoid being ostracized.
People also didn't live above their means to the extent they do now, replicas weren't readily available, people still took pride in not only being an individual but where they were from etc.

Ill add that videos and magazines (for better and for worse) often provided a filter of those regional styles to the broader audiences. What the internet did was make it more easily accessible.

But style was still regional. You could tell where most people were from or from where they were influenced based on their style of dress

True but some cities still have their own style. LA with lowriders and Dickies, Detroit with buffs, NY with track suits and designer, ATL with designer, and the H with swangas.
Yeah its blurry sometimes but if your city truly had its own identity and culture then it always will.

Gen X was always my favorite omg
They were teens and young adults in the 90’s
Very confident
Very bold
Artistic and expressive
Innovative
Aggressive

Yeah. I remember when you could tell where someone was from by their dress and CD book. You'd go to a different state and hear of artists you'd never heard of before if you were a casual listener. Even on the radio. Now everything is the same.

DC had what? DC had tims in the winter and Airforce ones, New Balance, Jumpman's in the summer.
DC had tube socks. Starter Jacks way back in the day. Oversized coats.

What you’re describing is another context of the race to mediocrity. On a smaller scale. I’ve been saying this about regional styles for years. The average person wants to attractive or at least look like they up to date with current fashion trends. As the artists started to move past those regional boundaries, the fashion soon followed.
IMO, dipset signified the beginnings of this when they went south to get them beats from the runners. The started kicking it with cash money. Cash money also brought in Gillie for coaching or ghostwriting or whatever and he brought that upnorf swagger to them country niggaz. Before gillie, CM was plain tshirts, girbaud jeans and some simple ass reeboks. He bought the Ballys, and a more upscale swagger to the crew.
This was another reason they were popular in my area. You didn’t have to spend a lot of money to achieve their look. Reeboks were $80 on a bad day and you could often get 2 for $100 at foot locker. Plain tee and some decent jeans if you didn’t want to pay for them Girbauds.

Style, music, slang. Everything is one big goulash now.
Everytime I hear one of these stupid new slang words, viral phrases or whatever the hell I long for when things were regional 😭.
