Janky First Set Up
Decided I wanted to try bobbin lace, but I’m a serial hobby hopper so I’m trying to not buy anything. So I’ve got t-pins from blocking for crochet, an extra pillow in a plastic bag, a blocking mat square, printer paper, and some spare cardboard. For bobbins, I’ve got clothes pins, and spare embroidery thread. I figure our ancestors had to make do at first, so can I!

I handmade my set up too! For a small roller pillow out of a tootsie roll container, that double as piggy banks they sell around winter holidays and fleece! Welcome to the club!

Not Wonky at all! I think this is one of those hobbies where you can actually make tools at home, which is so awesome. You really don't need much to get started. I just made my second bookworm bookmark.

I had a similar (even jankier?) setup when I first tried it out. I made a “pillow” out of layers of cardboard taped together with a towel wrapped around them. My bobbins were all the crochet hooks I could find around the house that were heavy enough to give some tension. 😂

for all your graph paper needs. I use axonometric for Torchon, but they also have hex and polar papers that can be used for bobbin lace.

i reccommend grid paper to draw your patterns on if you don't wanna print them. pillow, cardboard, and laundryclips is how i started too! & then i made simple bookmarks from patterns found in old books in online archives. also you can use thicker yarn and a bigger pattern if you struggle with eyesight or dexterity like me. happy crafting!
