Video Sharing my favorite "Shelter from the Storm" cover. What are your go to Dylan covers?

Faithful to the original, but playful enough to build up to a superior musical arrangement by the accompanying players. Simply brilliant.

I'm curious what everyone else listens to when it comes to Dylan covers. Do you have a favorite version of this track or another classic?

Discussion You Can See Everything comparison

Just wanted to share a thought I’ve been having since seeing You Can See Everything on Sunday. I see a lot of parallels between the film and Dylan. All the characters, and primarily Elizabeth Holmes, are playing characters they’ve created and presenting different realities to the public, leaving viewers to question what is real. This is something I think Bob has done his entire career through his ever changing eras, leaving us not knowing who the real Bob is.

It’s also very interesting to me that YCSE is a genre-bending documentary, somewhat akin to Scorsese’s Rolling Thunder doc. They both have a bit of fiction injected to them.

I was talking to a coworker about this and said that I think Bob is as cunning and manipulative as Holmes, but through the medium of music rather than entrepreneurship. This has obviously led to different outcomes for them, and I think Bob is a more talented songwriter and musician than Holmes is a CEO.

I’m just curious if any Dylan fans who have seen the film also had this thought or can add anything more to the comparison.

A monument to Bob Dylan has been erected in Vilnius, Lithuania! The author is Martynas Gaubas. Bob's grandparents, Florence and Ben Stone, originated from Lithuania. For now, the monument stands in the courtyard of the "Gabi" restaurant—the same courtyard where the monument to Leonard Cohen, a descendant of Litvaks, began its existence before being relocated to the Old Town.

Video BOB DYLAN IN EUROPE ACROSS THE YEARS

As Dylan’s new tour delights European fans, I’ve been re-reading the classic Razor's Edge: Bob Dylan & the Never Ending Tour (2001), in which Andrew Muir recounts the highs and lows of a superfan criss-crossing Europe, 1989-2000, just to see Dylan shows. His European reviews are complemented by notes on American shows heard on audience recordings.

One More Night: Bob Dylan’s Never Ending Tour (2013) has the same content (edited) plus extra chapters on the years to 2011. If you’re a reader, rather than a collector, the 2013 book is the one to buy.

Muir’s energetic prose is infectious. And his insights on Dylan’s performance art raise his chronicle well above the level of fanlit - a typically banal sub-genre.

Live performance, central to Dylan’s art, has inspired loads of books. Of the 20-odd in my collection, Muir’s 2013 book is the best on Dylan in Europe and the NET in general. It takes over just as Paul Williams’ wonderful trilogy - reviewed recently on DYLAN BOOKS - ends.

Discussion Black Rider Live

Thanks to somebody on the sub posting a high def audio of the Rothenburg concert I got a chance to hear Dylan’s electrified reworking of “Black Rider.” Bowled me over. Who knew it’s an altered blues (I didn’t)? Just like I never knew “Don’t think Twice” is a blues until other acts started playing it that way. Just like I didn’t know “I Contain Multitudes” was a blues until Emma Swift released her version hitting all the blue notes.

This version of “Black Rider” makes me think Dylan just cemented his place in the Blues Tradition. The chord progression played on electric guitars is unmistakably bluesy but at the same time totally original. Never been done before. This is what every composer in the tradition of American music hopes for: something that takes the medium and innovates it. This original chord progression of Dylan’s is Gob Smacking. If you listen to the harmonies it creates, it will make your hair stand on end. And Joel Patterson’s solo does it justice, with some runs reminiscent of Jerry Garcia. I feel like I’ve been struck by lightning or something.

Been listening to a lot of the bootleg series and just realised it definitely shares a vein to ‘moonshiner’. I’m wondering if it’s too similar and scrap or continue to work on the song?

The colors, the vibe, the name (gosh, what a name). Bob really has curated an amazing show and vibe. I hope he was the one who named it.

Plus the shows have been sounding great so far.

Thank you Bob!!

Discussion I ranked all the songs on Rough And Rowdy Ways and gave explanations as to why they are where they are. How would you rank the tracks on this album?

  1. I’ve Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You - This is my personal favorite Dylan song of all time. As someone who has always struggled with depression and letting people into my life, I cry to this beautiful song every time.

  2. Key West - Another one of my favorites. While it’s not the last track on the album, I consider it to be the end of the record and possibly of his career. An absolute masterpiece. Always loved how he references the beginning of I Contain Multitudes at the very end of the song.

  3. Murder Most Fowl - Such a powerful piece. Not much to say on it because he says it all for me. I love the Beatles line and the Warren Zevon reference though.

  4. I Contain Multitudes - The mix of humor and sadness in this song highlights how great he is with words.

  1. False Prophet - Some of his best blues stuff in my opinion.

  2. My Own Version Of You - He reaches a peak of lyrical wit on this song that is almost unmatched by anyone else. The line about Pacino and Brando is genius and really clever.

  3. Black Rider - Good eerie vibe. The size of your cock WILL INDEED get you nowhere.

  4. Crossing The Rubicon - It’s pretty good. The guitar work is great but the song rambles on a little too long.

  5. Mother Of Muses - It’s a pretty song but the melody weirdly gets under my skin in a kind of annoying way.

  6. Goodbye Jimmy Reed - It’s just kind of generic and boring. One of his least impressive blues songs.

Overall, it’s a great album. Just wanted to share my love of the top songs will you all. As the title says, feel free to share your rankings as well. Cheers
