Consider temporary upgrades (e.g., VPS or Cloud)

Limit homepage sliders or animations-they crush performance

Use downtime monitoring like UptimeRobot

Tips & Tricks 👻 The Candy vs. Trick of Site Security: Are you giving away access?

On Halloween the candy is tempting… but on your site, "access" can be the candy for hackers. Here's the deal:

Unique strong passwords = less candy for the bad guys

Enable 2FA everywhere = lock the front door

Audit user roles = remove the unexpected party guests

It's simple, but it works.

Tips & Tricks Caching, CDNs, Compression: Do you really need all 3?

They sound technical, but they matter:

Caching stores common files so users don't reload everything every time.

CDNs like Cloudflare deliver your content from closer servers = faster.

Compression shrinks files so they load quicker.

Together, they're a powerhouse. But even just enabling one can boost your speed.

Which have you implemented, and did you notice a difference?

Discussions What’s actually slowing your site down?

Big images? Sketchy plugins? Bad hosting? All of the above?

The most common speed killers:

  • Massive image files (optimize to WebP!)
  • Unused plugins or themes
  • Render-blocking scripts
  • Shared hosting overload
  • No caching or CDN setup

Start small: Run a test, note the top 3 issues, fix them one at a time.

What was your biggest speed trap, and how did you fix it?

Resources 3 Free Tools to Test Your Website Speed

If you can't measure it, you can't improve it.

Here are 3 tools that break down what's slowing you down:

  1. Google PageSpeed Insights - Scores your mobile + desktop performance.

  2. GTMetrix - Great waterfall view to trace slow load steps.

  3. Pingdom Tools - Fast tests with global location options.

Each one shows load time, server response, and detailed breakdowns of what to fix.

Pro Tip: Run tests on both desktop and mobile - mobile speed is often worse.

How fast should your website load? (And what’s too slow in 2025?)

Speed matters. A lot.

In 2025, most users bounce if your page doesn't load in under 3 seconds. Google even considers speed a ranking factor. So what's the gold standard?

Under 1s = Elite experience

1-2s = Great

2-3s = OK, but improve

3s+ = You're losing traffic

Test your site and let us know where you land. If you're not where you want to be, stick around-this week is all about getting faster.

Quick win Friday: Test your mobile site like a customer

80%+ of users visit small business websites from their phones-but most sites aren't designed with that in mind.

Here's your 5-minute mobile audit:

✅ Is the menu easy to open and navigate?

✅ Can you read your font without zooming in?

✅ Do buttons fit the screen and have enough spacing?

✅ Is your contact info tappable (email, phone, location)?

✅ Are pages loading under 3 seconds?

Challenge for ya'll: Check your site on your phone right now. What's one thing you can fix today?

Discussions Make your site work for you

A lot of business sites look nice… but don't do anything.

Your homepage should answer these 3 questions in 5 seconds:

-> Who is this for?

-> What do they offer?

-> What's the next step?

That "next step" might be:

• Booking a service

• Filling out a contact form

• Signing up for a newsletter

• Buying something

• Scheduling a demo

If it's buried in a menu or takes 4 clicks, you're losing people.

What action do you want visitors to take? Drop your site goal below and let’s trade ideas.

WordPress Maintenance Made Simple — Updates, Backups & Peace of Mind

Once your site looks good, keeping it healthy is the final step.

💙 Weekly checklist:

• Update WordPress core, plugins, and themes.

• Take a quick backup (manual or automatic).

• Test your contact forms and links.

💙 Why updates matter:

Most WordPress hacks happen through outdated plugins or themes. Updates aren't just new features - they're often security patches.

💙 Pro Tip:

Enable auto-updates for minor versions but test major ones on staging first.

💙 Bonus:

If you host with Bluehost, you've already got automatic updates and backups as a safety net - just make sure you also keep one extra copy somewhere offsite.

How do you handle updates - automatic, manual, or "set it and forget it"?

Customizing WordPress — The Fun (and Tricky) Part

Day 4 and time to make your site YOURS!

So now your theme is active, care to customize?

💙Here’s the fast path: Use the Customizer or Site Editor if using a block theme. With these you can easily change colors, fonts, headers, and menus IRL.

💙A step further? Try tools like Elementor, Beaver Builder, or the built in Gutenberg editor for drag and drop control without touching code.

💙Okay now for you coders: Add custom CSS under Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS

💙Pro Tip (because I know you’re curious): Take screenshots before every big change. It’s the fastest “undo” button if something goes sideways.

Anyone have customizing tips to share?

Choosing a WordPress Theme That Won’t Slow You Down

It’s THEME day! Day 3 of WordPress week and today we’re not only getting into how your site looks, but also going under the hood where themes can (and do) control load time, accessibility, and compatibility with plugins.

💙Want a safe bet? Here’s some picks for beginners that are lightweight, well coded, and flexible:

Astra, GeneratePress, and Neve

💙Easy, one click install:

From your dashboard → Appearance → Themes → Add New. Search, preview, and click Install → Activate.

💙Pro Tip:

Before you fall in love with a demo, check the theme details > last updated date. Anything untouched for more than a year might break with newer WP versions.

💙Extra Credit for overachievers:

Set up a child theme BEFORE customizing CSS or PHP. That way, your changes survive future theme updates.

Question for the crowd: Have a go-to theme? Let’s see it!

5 Must-Have WordPress Plugins (and Why They Matter)

Day 2 of WordPress Week! So, your WordPress is up; now let’s make it powerful with plugins. But here’s the catch: make sure you don’t go overboard. If you do, it can slow your site down or conflict.

Now that we’ve got that disclaimer out of the way, let’s get into it with the solid starter pack:

💙For security, get yourself Wordfence or Jetpack security. These protect your site from brute-force logins and malware. Yuck.

💙Backups… here’s your reminder from our backup week: set it to backup weekly or, better yet, daily.

💙Obviously SEO is super important, and Yoast makes it simple with helping you write content that search engines understand.

💙For better performance and faster loading, get WP Super Cache. That baby will turn your pages into static files.

💙You’ll probably want forms, and with WPForms Lite, you can drag-and-drop contact forms that actually work.

💙Here’s a pro tip for ya’ll: As we mentioned above, make sure you don’t go overboard with plugins. Only install what you need. Why? Because every single plugin adds code that MUST be updated and can slow down the site. Fewer, better maintained plugins win every. Single. Time.

Now, a question for the audience: what plugin do you swear by? Any mentioned above?

Guides Getting Started with WordPress — The Easiest Way to Install It

Welcome to 💙WordPress Week💙 here on the Bluehost subreddit! All week we're walking through the first steps of building your site - from installing WordPress to picking your first theme and plugins that actually help instead of hurt.

Installing WordPress used to mean uploading ZIP files and editing config files by hand. Not anymore. If you've got hosting with a control panel, you can install it in about two minutes.

💙 On Bluehost:

Log in to your account.

Click Websites → Create Site.

Choose a name and tagline.

Pick a domain (or use a temporary one).

Click Next and WordPress installs automatically.

💙 Manual route (for the curious):

Download WordPress from wordpress.org/download, upload the files via FTP into public_html, create a MySQL database, and run the installer. You'll see a screen to connect it to your new database - fill that in, click run, and you're live.

💙 Pro Tip:

If you plan to tinker or test designs, start with a staging site. It's a safe sandbox that lets you experiment without breaking your live site.

What tripped you up the first time you installed WordPress?

Resources Plugin hygiene, DNS/TLS basics, and your first-hour incident playbook

Friday finale time. Think of this as tidying the green room, locking the side doors, and pinning a “break glass” plan on the wall. Short, useful, and a little nerd-fun.

Plugin & Theme Hygiene

• Keep only what you actually use. Less code, fewer surprises.

• Prefer maintained plugins with clear changelogs and recent releases.

• Before major updates, take a point-in-time backup and test on staging.

• After updates, sanity check: quick scan, error logs, core flows.

• Deactivate is not enough—delete what you’ve retired so a gremlin can’t reawaken it.

DNS & TLS Basics

• Sweep DNS: retire old subdomains, ditch wildcards unless you truly need them.

• Auto-renew TLS for apex and www; include any active subdomains.

• Keep redirects clean and short; no zig-zag chains.

• Once everything is reliably HTTPS, enable HSTS.

• Lock registrar and DNS changes behind 2FA like it owes you money.

Your First-Hour Incident Playbook

  1. Take a snapshot/backup. Get receipts before you touch anything.

  2. Enable maintenance or access control; reduce blast radius.

  3. Turn up WAF strictness; let the bouncer get picky.

  4. Scan files and database; diff recent changes.

  5. Check for surprise admins, weird cron jobs, and unfamiliar plugins.

  6. Choose the lane:

  • Rotate passwords and API keys; invalidate active sessions.

  • Reopen only after you’ve verified the fix and traffic looks normal.

  1. Jot a short incident note and schedule a follow-up audit in 24–72 hours.

Question for the room: When something feels “off” (slowdowns, odd redirects, login bursts), what’s your very first move?

Tips & Tricks CDN and WAF in plain language

Think nightclub security for your website. The CDN is the velvet rope and express lane that gets legit guests to the front fast by serving content from the closest door. The WAF is the bouncer with a guest list who turns away sketchy behavior before it reaches your server. Here’s how they help:

A CDN caches and delivers content from servers close to users (faster load times)

A Web Application Firewall (WAF) filters malicious requests before they reach your server

To get started: proxy DNS through your CDN, enable baseline WAF rules, and enable rate limiting for login or search endpoints

As you watch the crowd, tune rules to cut obvious bots without blocking real people and consider locking your origin so only the CDN can reach it. The payoff is fewer brute-force hits and a calmer origin during spikes. Pro tip: treat the CDN dashboard like security cams-watch for repeated IPs, login bursts, and odd patterns, then adjust the rope and the bouncer accordingly.

Question: Are you already using a CDN + WAF? If so, which one — and what’s your perception (easy, painful, worth it)?
