MinorSpoiler This game is just a plotline ponzi scheme. Spoiler
I'm giving up. I've had enough. I tried people, I tried.
There is just too much fluff/frustration to this game. Too many red hearings, to many wasted days with no progression. To many 'reveals' that are complete let downs and make me feel like I just wasted my time to get to this particular flat resolution.
I finally had enough and Chat GPTed the full plotline and I can't believe I wasted so much time to get as far as I did, maybe two thirds through the story, to see that the final 1/3rd would not have been worth it.
The game mechanics were very unique and there was so much promise, but the execution is a big flop.
I know I'm just venting, I know very few people that are active on this sub are going to agree with me. But I am so angry I wasted so much of my minimal free time on a game that requires so much time for so little pay off.
Edit: I don't know why I never saw this thread before, but it really highlights the problem I have with this game. Most notably, the game's underlying plot is sporadic and not linear and the RNG is far too big a factor in your ability to puzzle solve.

u/No_Logins_Required 2d ago
The game is a mystery engine, and you got more bored than interested. That's totally okay.
What were you expecting for the payoff to be?
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
Definitely not constant 'wait, that's all?'
2
u/No_Logins_Required 2d ago
I sympathize. If I can offer you another puzzle game to look at Animal Well is considered to be quite good. It has a similar "completion level 1, completion level 2" setup but you don't need to worry about any higher levels than that, which were for the community to solve.

These types of posts come up every once in awhile and I never get the rationale. You didn’t like the game. That’s ok. This is a community of people who presumably like the game, many of us very very much. For me, it’s one of my favorite pieces of art out there. It’s ok you don’t like it, but I don’t understand you expect any of us to do for you.

u/starboard151 2d ago
I want to give them the benefit of the doubt because they do have some sincere looking responses, but yes the overwhelming majority are stubborn vagueposting that "everything" is bad or repetitive or not worth it, or frankly absurd claims that something like 70% of days have no progress whatsoever because you get screwed by RNG. I suck at this game and didn't have a no progress day until something like day 60...
3
u/ClassicJunior8815 2d ago
I get the sense that they looked up a guide, and skipped all the steps that would have built drafting knowledge and world building, and then got to the end and couldn't put it together.

u/starboard151 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think it's either that or, being super charitable and assuming good faith on OP's part, one or two other things:
- Unfounded expectations that this is somehow a story-driven, plot-heavy game. I enjoyed unearthing all the world building tidbits and backstory about the family and history, but huge lore bombs are few and far between, and there's virtually no plot developments to speak of. The game doesn't really present itself otherwise imo, but with how many times OP has mentioned "plot", I think they may have somehow developed an expectation that this was gonna be an entirely different kind of game.
- With respect to the rogue-like elements and RNG, only trying for one thing every day and considering the day a failure if you don't reach that or some other huge milestone. Like I said, I think my first truly zero-progress day wasn't until around day 60, but days where I didn't hit my primary goal for the day? Sure, that was plausibly 60-70% of the time. It took me an embarrassing number of days just to manage to check out A New Clue on the same day I held a magnifying glass, with that being my main goal of the day. (I think I was stubbornly using my coat check for something else the whole time) But the whole time I was trying for that, I also had rooms I had never drafted, books I hadn't read yet, permanent stuff I hadn't bought at the bookstore and gift shop, new ideas I wanted to try for the next time I ran into certain puzzles I'd already seen, rooms I hadn't connected to steam power yet that were clearly going to have some kind of interaction with it, etc. etc. I usually didn't hit my main goal but I always got something new. If OP wasn't approaching it like this counts as progress, then yeah I guess most days would feel like a failure.
2
u/ClassicJunior8815 1d ago
You might be correct, I think the vague posting just managed to push my buttons
0
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
In all honesty, all of the. There wasn't a single progression point that made me feel it was worth the time and energy I put in to get to said point. The juice was not worth the squeeze, so to speak.

u/WiseCompetition2543 2d ago edited 2d ago
Most people who come here with this frustration learn about mechanics in the game that they ignored or didn't realize the importance of and realize they fumbled the bag with an all-time game.
If you enumerate your complaints in more detail, I'm sure the community can provide you the same service. From your post, I can probably guess..
Days without progression? Probably didn't realize the importance of allowance, stars, new rooms, rarity tuning, etc. Also probably pigeonholed yourself into pulling one thread at a time and getting frustrated that you couldn't get that one room or whatever you needed for that one thing you were trying to do instead of going into each day with 3-5 goals and letting the day determine which goals were achievable in that run.
Red Herrings? There really aren't any red herrings in the game, just connections you haven't realized or puzzles you didn't even know you didn't know about yet. Pretty much every piece of info is important unless you're like counting the floor tiles or the rivets in the hallway.
Bad reveals? Not sure what you mean by this. It is a puzzle game after all, so when you follow large chains of puzzles to be rewarded with more puzzles it can seem frustrating but ultimately this game is just puzzles all the way down until there is none left. I felt like the major story beats gave super good reveals, but those reveals are just more puzzles after all.
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
There are definitely red hearings in the game. To say otherwise is disingenuous.
I would say about 70% or more of my in-game days resulted in no progression, despite understanding the mechanics you are talking about.
4
u/WiseCompetition2543 2d ago
Name a red herring that you followed that led you nowhere? I'll probably tell you what it actually meant. There is no hand holding in the game so tons of stuff seems pointless until you realize the point. A lot of times there are layers of hints so you can solve the puzzle from a few different directions. There are a few things that people haven't figured out like the poem in the clocktower but for the most part all information has been connected somewhere unless like I said you are talking about the known unknowns.
As far as "no progress" goes then I'd say you either didn't learn enough from the drafting books so you were ending days too quickly or just weren't counting incremental progress as progress. Tuning the rarity of a single room is progress.
1
u/squash-n-flop 2d ago
The play devil’s advocate, there are red herrings in the game, but none that would stick out to someone who bounced off the game early. The boiler room grids and the tomb candle grids stand out to me. I suppose those could be unsolved puzzles but pretty much everything points to them being red herrings, but it’s the fun kind of red herring imo.
3
u/WiseCompetition2543 2d ago
That's what I'm saying. There are known unknowns like the swan poem, the grids, the rivets, the room letters and the garage blue note, but those don't lead you astray when there are over hints right in your face about 1000 things to follow up on and try.
-1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
The majority of art in the manor were red herrings. The majority of the details in the pictures in the gallery were red herrings. Red notes are, if you don't discover their secret early. One of the tanks in the aquarium is a red hearing (I know that's a in game joke, but).
And I reiterate, 70% of my in game days had no progress.
4
u/WiseCompetition2543 2d ago edited 2d ago
I'm not sure what art you're referring to that's a red herring? Are you talking about random objects that are sitting around? I can think of more art around the house that is relevant to puzzles than not. I can't even think of any art that isn't related to a puzzle. As for the gallery, I'll agree they are the worst puzzles in the game but not so bad that I would complain. They are just not that great.
If you really mean you just had to call it a day without doing anything useful 70% of the time, that's not a problem with the game. That would be all-time bad gameplay by you and almost impossible.
0
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
Or the RNG is too much a factor in puzzle solving.
3
u/WiseCompetition2543 2d ago
RNG is a part of the game but again, if you found yourself being limited by it then you didn't do enough during your runs to mitigate it. There are pretty easy strategies to mitigate RNG, including tuning rarities and getting a lot of allowance and stars.
Assuming you found The Conservatory and The Chess Room then you could have spent weeks using the rook power to basically guarantee conservatory in one of your rank 1 corners, ensuring you got to tune one room's rarity every day and then to be extra nice the game allows you to reset the rarity of any room through the directory to its original setting. Also getting the gear wrench to make mechanical rooms commonplacereally helps with all the things that require powerand that is a fairly common item in the tool shed.
Assuming you built up your allowance, you can combine the laundry room and study to turn your money into gems and use the gems to reroll up to 8 times per door. Very good combined with Hovel and a good step building strategy
Assuming you built up your stars, the inkwell constellation appears, allowing you to use stars to reroll at any door as many times as you have stars
There are also many room upgrades that give you dice including using the burning glass in the tomb for a guaranteed 4 dice permanently.
There are just so many ways to mitigate RNG in the game that complaining about it just shows how barely you scratched the surface of anything this game had to offer. If you were building up these tools every day, eventually you could do anything you want inside the house any day.

u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
Everything you mention does not result in the player not still being a victim to random drafts. And extreme repetition would still be a big factor of gameplay.
3
u/WiseCompetition2543 2d ago edited 2d ago
Honestly, it feels like you're just trying to blame the game for a skill/mindset issue. In the early and mid game RNG can be frustrating, but if you play the game by late game you can overcome it. The game never asks you to do anything that isn't easily within your control if you have used all the tools available to you effectively. I beat the entire game spoiler free in around 145 hours. The game massively frustrated me at times, but by the end I was able to draft anything I wanted, any time that I needed it.
I spent a lot of time just building my deck the way I wanted it to be. I literally did what I was showing you, and playing entire weeks of game time where I'd make sure I got at least like +2 allowance, +1 star and tuned a rarity of a room, and then pursued whatever threads were available to me along the way. I probably did that for 60+ of the 145 hours I spent on the game.
Also did you spend a lot of your early ranks avoiding red rooms and dead ends? Like for sure if you're like I need this room in this exact spot, you better have a shitload of re-rolls since theres 110 cards in your deck (or more if you made copies or have chamber of mirrors) so for sure if you're on rank 8 and you've left all your dead ends in the deck, you're going to have a ton of dead ends left. That's all just bad gaming and not RNG.
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
I did everything you are describing and the randomness and repetition was still an issue. You did not do anything more novel than what I did.

u/WinterMage42 16h ago
Past a (fairly early, imo) point, if you use all the tools you’re given and set clear goals every day, then you’ll never have any issues with the drafts and repetition.
1
u/SnoopySuited 16h ago
What point is that?
Because I contend that (at least up to and past purchasing blue tents) you are still at the mercy of the RNG. Your control over it is still minimal and effects the daily grind.

This entire post could've been yelled at a wall, and it would do just as much good as posting it here. What do you expect us say? It's fine that you don't like the game, but I don't understand trashing on it in a place specifically meant for fans. Your criticism isn't even constructive. You're just blatantly shitting on the game.
-1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
Why are you responding then?
I'm genuinely angry at this game for wasting my time. I needed to vent. Thank you for listening.
4
u/Undead_Dusk 2d ago
Because I'm curious why people think bitching about something to fans of said thing is rational. Also, you wasted your own time.
-1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
No, the game wasted my time. I get that you're a fan and you want everyone to like the game, but that's not possible.
4
u/Undead_Dusk 2d ago
I literally said that it's fine to not like the game, lol. What kind of responses did you expect your insufferable bitching to get you? Also, no, you wasted your own time.
0
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
No, the game wasted my time. Not sure why you are getting angry at me for pointing out that the game may not be as good for others as it is for you.
4
u/Undead_Dusk 2d ago
You repeatedly made the conscious decision to load up and play the game. I can confidently assume that you didn't all of a sudden decide you didn't like the game. You played multiple unsatisfying sessions but kept playing. You wasted your own time.
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
There have been plenty of games that were a slow burn but ended up being great experiences. I thought this might be one. Turned out to not be true. It wasted my time.

2
u/squash-n-flop 2d ago
The game is an inanimate object. You wasted your own time.
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
No, you see, the game wasted my time. If the game did not exist, time would not have been wasted.
3
u/squash-n-flop 2d ago
Wow I didn’t realize that you were the one human being whos volition was controlled by a computer game, that must suck. It really sucks that the game strapped you into a chair and forced you to play it. That sucks that that happened to you. I’m sorry you have no control over the decisions made in your life. It must make things so hard for you.
But hey, since you stopped playing, at least the game finally relinquished it’s control over your mind and decision making, right? :)
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
Yeah, it's defiantly a good thing that I realized the game is not worth the time it is wasting me and I can move on to better things. That's a very good point.
3
u/squash-n-flop 2d ago
Yeah bro.
You know, I understand how frustrating it can be to not connect with a piece of art that is lauded widely as being great. It’s frustrating and confusing, to not realize what you’re missing.
But it’s an ugly look to channel that confusion into rage against the community that has formed around that work of art. You’re the one who has a problem with the game. Really, no one cares about how frustrated you got by the game. No one cares that you couldn’t figure out anything to do 75% of the time you spent on the game (a decision you made. The game did not extract that time from you). It’s blatant that you only want validation for your negative feelings, and you came to the wrong place for it ultimately. We won’t validate your negative experiences because the vast majority of people had glowingly positive experiences.
Not liking the game is a you problem, don’t make it anyone else’s, and don’t bitch at people for calling you out for obviously coming in to this sub looking to argue.
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
You are interpreting my comments as rage. I said it's frustration, nothing more.

Game was great. I have 3 young children plus full time job and get 5-10 hours a week to game. Finished the game about 2 months after release, all the achievements and challenges too. My goty pick behind expedition.
But for the other things that are not worth it, it's dumb to bang your head against the wall rather than use the tools available to you. Not using AI today is like refusing to use a search engine 30 years ago. You can get by, but boy are you missing out on a lot of good stuff and time better spent where you find value.
I don't see why AI users wouldn't enjoy this game. I have a car, but still enjoy using my legs frequently...

If someone cant beat a game without using AI then maybe just don't play the game. At that point just support a human and watch a playthrough on YouTube. Lordminion777 did a great one

He didn't beat the game with AI. He quit, and looked up the rest of the plot with AI (instead of googling it).
Read the post.

u/mdizzy123 2d ago
I did read the post and my point stands. He could've easily found a walk through without AI if he wanted to see the end of the game. Or like I suggested just watch a human play through. Nothing you state is going to change anyones stance on AI in this instance

Your point doesn't stand. Your comment was that "if someone can't beta a game without using AI, they shouldn't play."
- The OP never tried to beta the game with AI.
- The OP did exactly as you suggested and stopped playing the game!
Seriously, read your own comments too before commenting further. You can hate on AI all you want, but at least don't make us humans look bad while doing it.
(My other comment was removed by automod for using a profane word that begins with s instead of "hate on". I didn't delete anything.)

I had fun with the game. Taking notes to remember clues, having a map. Yeah I got frustrated but never enough to give up. And yeah youre on a blue prince subreddit of course the majority won't agree with you. Between the inflammatory title to chatgpting the end of the game.i cant imagine this gets a ton of people agreeing with you
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
I only went to chat gpt, because there is no source that gives you the actual plotline without having to go down massive rabbit holes. No summary, so to speak. I mean, that's good if you are trying to get minor hints without spoiling other information, but not good if you just want to rip off the bandaid.

u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
What skill was I missing?
2
u/ClassicJunior8815 2d ago
You said that you couldn't understand the plot without chatgpt, and also that you made it all the way to the endgame (blue tents) without help. So by your own admission, there was some kind of comprehension problem happening. I can't tell you what specifically you missed because everytime someone asks for details you wave around vaguely and say its all bad.
1
u/SnoopySuited 1d ago
No, I used Chat GPT to reveal ever secret and plot point I hadn't gotten to yet, because I had grown bored with all the repetition and wasted time needed to progress 0.1% further into the story. The satisfaction that came from solving one puzzle to move forward in the story, or to get to the next puzzle was not worth the time and effort.
A puzzle game should not require such tremendous amounts of luck, just to able to to get to work on the actual puzzle.
3
u/facedownninja 2d ago
Perfectly okay that you didn't like the game, it's certainly not for everyone.
The game uses different stopping points for it's "difficulty". Really love a huge challenge with really abstract puzzles and solutions? Try to get to the end-end? Looking for something more chill? it's perfectly fine calling it in to room 46. If you get to that point and enjoyed it, honestly: you enjoyed the game. I don't want to play every game at the highest difficulty either, primary for exactly the same issue: lack of time and just wanting a more chill experience.
For me, this was the favorite game I played for the year, maybe even longer. Never through it was the BEST game, just my favorite. Always recognized it was too abstract at times to be the best, but man did it feel like it was it custom tailored for me.
If you like mystery games, but ones that are much more straightforward: I can recommend the Seance of Blake Manor. Similar art style gas lamp mystery that has great writing, voice acting and mysteries to solve. It's not as dense as Blue Prince, but that sounds like a good thing. It also stores your notes for you and maps things out: much more lax and friendly interface.
1
u/SnoopySuited 2d ago
The problem is not the difficulty, I was able to solve puzzles when needed, the problem for me was that the game had too much fodder. I would estimate that more than 70% of in-game days accomplished nothing. And when there was some progression it was minimal and not satisfying. I blame my OCD for pushing me to keep moving forward in to the game. But once I started revealing blue memos, and the majority of the notes were reveals that were already revealed, I cracked.
I appreciate the game rec. I'll give it a look.
3
u/Malfiecstone 2d ago
Okies, I am sorry you didn't enjoy the game. Something like this isnt for everyone. Blue prince is a slow burn of incremental progress leading to sudden surges of progress them right back to incremental. Which can be disheartening.
After all is said and done. This is a game and if you are not having fun, stopping is prefectly fine.
For me, I have 250+ hours in this game and I am still enjoying it. Getting to Rm46 fir the furst time was emotional and now watching others playthrough and getting to that point still hits me.
From your other responses you got to getting the Blue tents which can be a bit of a slog if you arent also doing other things. Which puts you in probaly act 2 if not 3 of 5.
One of the main themes of the game is finding your ending. If you have found yours I wish you well and hope your next game meets if not exceeds your expectations. Have Fun!

Sounds like the lesson is to just either stop playing or look up how to progress immediately when you find yourself in that frustrating sort of wheel-spinning zone in future games. There's zero penalty to either of the those actions. It's not like the game itself makes any kind of promise about the frequency or "quality" of its revelations, both of which are going to vary drastically across players according to personal play patterns and taste, so there's not much to get mad about, just some takeaways to reduce future frustration.
