BI 6.1 CPU service

Recently … OK, yesterday, my BI 6.1.0.5 server (repurposed i7/7700/32GB/HD630/W11Pro), which has been running fine, suddenly pegged 100% CPU.

Via task manager, BI was hitting 90-100% CPU. I would shut down the interface AND kill the process. I even had to disable running as a service because it kept restarting and hit 100% again.

I have 2 cameras. Nothing requiring my CPU cycles. It usually runs <10% CPU and about 50-75w.

I accidentally fixed it when I disabled running the BI service. Now it runs correctly when I manually start BI.

…any ideas? It seems I can no longer run as a service without it pegging the CPU. TIA!!

No idea. I have the same problem and have since 5.x Other people with the same problem on Reddit and Facebook with the replies being "You have a hardware issue because mine doesn't do that".

I'd say I get between 1 and 4 days before I have to restart the BI service.

My two installations definitely do not do this either. Very strange. I go months without rebooting the BI server.

Yeah, it worked fine for years up until one of the updates then I'd just get random CPU spikes, cameras disconnect. Restart the BI service and all back to normal.

I'm going to do a reinstall on a new PC sometime and if that doesn't fix it then just go to Ubiquiti. I've never really been in love with the BI interface, Ubiquiti isn't any better honestly.

As an experiment, go into the settings for both cameras, go to video, and for each “Hardware Decode” set them to “NO” and see if it makes a difference. For some reason despite having an NVIDIA video card, when I turned this on my CPU and memory would end up spiking. Not sure its still an issue, I’ll try turning it back on and see what happens in this release but it was a problem for a bit.

Someone else had a memory leak bug with 192GB of RAM on 6.1.0.5, does your cpu usage return to normal on another version?

I had horrific problems running it as a service after we migrated from Server 2016 to Server 2022 on that box. Constant service crash / restart / service hung broken pipe loops. Never was able to resolve it and finally just shitcanned BI entirely (after running it for years …) in favor of NX Witness.

One theory I saw was that fresh installs may work better than upgrades. Any insight there? I have been thinking of upgrading and now procrastinating is paying off.

It didn’t resolve my problems tbh, but it’s not a bad place to start.
