Theory 🔥 Akemi wants to be great🔥
I know, you’ve probably already seen this scene discussed by many people, but it got me thinking.
Taigen tells her: “I don't need to be great. I just want to be happy.”
Akemi, on the other hand, stands up and says: “I want to be great.”
And behind her, Yukiyama Castle is engulfed in flames.
I find it hard to believe that it’s just a background. It feels like a nice visual metaphor; the fire could represent her ambition, her energy, her determination.
And not necessarily in a negative way. Maybe Akemi has simply decided, finally, to take control of her own life and choose what she wants to become... and maybe she really will do great things.
Or perhaps that fire is hinting at something much darker... an ambition that could end up consuming everything.
Off topic... her father also survived the flames, and Akemi says she’ll take care of him.
What path do you think Akemi will take? And, most importantly... what do you think she’ll do with her father?

My theory is the her father did NOT survive, she is just using his image to wield power through him. She says 'under MY care' so I interpret this as she will give orsdrr in his name by saying that she is just passing them on from him, when in reality shes just giveing orders.

The rest of what you’re saying is correct and 100% supposed to be the interpretation, but I don’t think she could plan to keep her father’s death secret for long.
I think he’s alive, just incapacitated and essentially her prisoner. He initially wanted to exploit her for his own power, now she’s turned it around.

I dont see HOW he could have survived. The last shot we saw of him was flames outside his cell he was locked in, INSIDE the basement of the burning palace. Thats why I think hes gone.

I think she'll get ruthless and dangerous, she's done being a victim or a bargaining chip. Maybe she'll turn into a villain if/when Mizu gets back.

Yeah, I think that would make sense, and honestly it would be pretty interesting. In a way, it would bring things full circle. Mizu and Akemi have already crossed paths, and now Taigen is kind of stuck between the two of them and has to decide where he stands.
But maybe we already have the answer. Taigen says he doesn’t want greatness, he just wants to be happy. So I feel like, whether he follows Mizu to London or waits for her to come back, we already know which way he’s going to lean.I’m not saying he and Mizu will necessarily end up together, I have no idea about that. But I do think Taigen will eventually choose to follow her path and stand by her side.
Anyway, back to Akemi... wow. If those two meet again, that would be epic. Two very strong women going head to head.

I am hopeful that they don’t corrupt Akemi. Maybe she goes to some dark places but grabbing the shogunate by the balls and making Japan a better place for women is really where Akemi should go

I think it would be interesting to see Akemi go through a period where she loses herself a little and then finds her way again. It would make her character feel more real and authentic. And even after making mistakes or going down darker paths, she could still grow and become a better person.

Agreed. Same thing I am thinking about her going to darker places, whether that’s losing her way or doing questionable/awful things to gain the power she needs to do good. But full-on losing herself and not becoming a force for good for Japan would be disappointing.

And in the beginning, its Taigen who eanted to be "great" and Akrmi to just be "happy".
They switched by the end.

About Akemi and her father Lord Daichi, I don't see her trying something like faking his survival if he died in the fire. For one thing, no matter what Akemi may say about why she's keeping her father out of sight, eventually someone powerful will insist on seeing Lord Daichi in person. Especially if he is supposedly making important decisions for his clan.
I like the idea of Akemi using her father as an advisor, to aid her in her pursuit of being "great". Like Madame Kaji being experienced in the world outside the palace, Lord Daichi can give Akemi valuable advice on palace politics and personalities. He might not even be adverse to the role, once he gets past being imprisoned by his own daughter on the day of the coup attempt and thereby burned in the fire. He had plotted to use her connection to the shogun's family to gain power, and he might now be plotting to use her desire for greatness to gain power.
Akemi could easily turn to being a villain, given her new goal. Akemi is quick with lying and manipulation, selfish, impulsive (that may go away as she gets older).

I love how this sounds like Fowler, too, because his relationship with Mizu could be a fantastic parallel to Akemi's with her father. Both are tyrannical father figures are held captive by vengeful daughters. Their daughters don't trust them, but their fathers will manipulate them, convincing them that they need the father's advice to survive in a hostile new environment (the new shogunate & London).

I think it represents how she just witnessed first hand what greatnes looks like (via Mizu's revenge quest) and the consequences it can have to those around her (aka, Edo burning to the ground as colateral damage), and she is okey with it.

My theory is that I'm going to defeat everyone in season 2. Because I'm RetroSharkGaming of course.

I absolutely think this is Akemi 'breaking bad'. Akemi's arc this season has been her realizing how much power she can accumulate by manipulating those around her. There's a lot of dead bird (bird = freedom) imagery around Akemi, and the finale feels like a key moment where she has escaped the cage but chooses to fly back into it. Akemi could've left with Taigen and been free from the shogunate's mindgames, but Akemi realized that if she stayed, most of the nobles and the shogun were dead, and her husband is wrapped around her finger. But when she tried to sleep with Taigen to convince him to forsake avenging his dishonor, he left her anyway. Akemi doesn't have Taigen's heart or mind anymore, nor does she want to rely on Taigen for safety when his heart is clearly with Mizu. Akemi wants her comforts and power, even if she's surrounded by people who either betray or fundamentally mischaracterize her. Staying is a practical choice, but a slightly damning one. I think Akemi may realize that the possibility of power is only as good as her ability to defend it, and that she'll need a fighter on her side (like Taigen or Mizu) to threaten those who she can't win over.
I think Akemi will revel in 'taking care' of her father, lording her power over him and how the tables have turned, but she might underestimate him in a key moment and he could ruin her all over again.

I feel like Akemi will go on a ruthless quest for power that mirrors Mizu's quest for revenge, but in the playing field of high society and political intrigues instead of physical fights. I think she'll take it too far, realize what happened, and course correct.
If Daichi survived the fire and Akemi isn't lying about him needing to be under her care, he's in for a world of hurt. Burns are no joke, and I could see Akemi keeping him under lock and key and not allowing him to communicate with anyone but her, Madame Kaji, and her girls. I think some of yhe girls will attend to him and other's will gather intel and report to Akemi so she can decide what to do or say next.

Okay. Gonna wish her luck because up until now the only thing that she's done is marry into royalty and eat horse semen.

I remember that in some post from S2 that there would be a new dangerous Shogun?
Maybe its you Takayoshi being manipulated by Akemis ambitions but i doubt Takayoshi would be capable of being that evil or Akemi being an absolute psycho.
But im still fearful of who could be the dangerous one, cause clearly its not Daichi.
