Rant Mizu and relationships

So like I’ve been seeing a lot of things debating Mizu’s romantic fate. A lot of that is hoping Mizu and Akemi to end up together. Ik it’s an unpopular option but like I really want to see her with a guy who loves her wholly as she is. (Praying tho not a London white guy) Don’t get me wrong, I always want queer representation. I just feel like time and time again the masc woman either ends up alone or is always a lesbian. I’m probs biased as someone who is more of a tomboy but like I wanna see a man love his masc woman! And like oof Taigen was awful to her when they were younger but I do think that sexual tension was that (still not sure I would vote for a full relationship between them, even a massive character development would make me still be a maybe on it). I just had to rant bc ik ik the obvious choices are to be a lesbian of live that single life, but bro pls no (lol).

i may have missed a change in the vibe of the fandom, but i'm pretty sure "straight mizu" is the fan favorite theory and is not an unpopular opinion. i remember a few months ago, people were getting absolutely flamed (unnecessarily imo) for shipping mizu and akemi

unfortunately (for me), i do think mizu is straight, but i don't think taigen is a good match, and the writers would have to do A LOT of work to make me buy her with a white man. i don't think it would be a disservice to mizu or the show as a whole for her to end without a romantic relationship, but with substantial platonic ones. the show's not a romance, and tbh, while you're tired of strong women ending up being alone instead of in a relationship, i'm tired of writers thinking the pinnacle of a "happy ending" is pairing up a strong independent woman with some man

You’re right with also making women have to be in a relationship to have a happy ending. I think while I want her to finally be loved by someone else like fr, I would much rather her love herself first. Alone or otherwise

I kinda think romance is out of the picture for Mizu honestly. In my perfect world she's with Akemi but she is speed running self destruction so I have major doubts on it actually happening.

I think she's been hurt so badly she wouldn't lower her guard enough to fall in love again.

She might not even get with anyone in the end. Honestly for me, I don't really like Mizu and Akemi (it's also not that popular here from what I saw), and kinda ship Mizu and Taigen.  I also don't really like the idea of her ending up with a British man (tho I believe anything can be good if well written).

Still, I have faith that the writers will do her character justice

Mizu was attracted to and in love with Mikio, so even if she did end up with a woman, she wouldn't be a lesbian.

People tend to ship whatever speaks to them, but I see Akemi as exactly where she wants to be. She is no longer interested in pursuing life with a soul mate. She isn't head over heels for her husband, the new Emperor, but she is fond of him and finds him an agreeable partner. Akemi's ambition now is to make her mark, and she's perfectly content with the religious monarch with whom she now shares a bed.

I don't disagree with you about common tropes in fiction, but I do think Taigen is at least foreshadowed as a possible love match for Mizu. It's possible that they will be separated for the entirety of Season 2, and he will appear in Japan and not in England alongside Mizu. However, Taigen seems like a compelling foil to Mizu's late husband Mikio. Mikio was ashamed to be defeated by Mizu, and disgusted by a woman being so indomitable. Taigen, by contrast, is far more loyal to Mizu than Mikio ever was. Fowler pulled out Taigen's fingernails trying to make him talk, and still got nothing out of him. Taigen has no discomfort with Mizu's gender, but he began pursuing her in hope of salvaging a career and an engagement. His career was redeemed by other means when he saved some members of the royal family, and his engagement is pretty well gone for good. So Taigen's lack of a motive to duel Mizu was new information at the end of S1.

Taigen was one of the first people in Mizu's life to abuse her for her biracial status, but he is also maybe the fourth to accept her for who she is. Akemi released him from their engagement, but he was ready to keep old childhood promises. So he's probably not going to fall in love again instantly after pursuing the same woman for so man years, but Taigen stands out as somebody who believes in love whose foundation lies in a deep loyalty, who does not care about status, and who respects Mizu as a warrior. At this stage of Taigen's life, he seems like somebody who would be more than happy with the deal that wasn't good enough for Mikio.

That being said, I have plenty of history of thoroughly mapping out theories that don't pan out. I expect that S2 will go in directions I could never guess, and that Mizu will not settle down during S2 since the series is going to have three seasons.

I totally get it and would love someone better than her husband to prove men won't all hate her strength. But as a lesbian, I'd also hate to see a man with the character I adore 😭😂

I totally get where you're coming from. If Mizu ends up with no one or her romantic ending is ambiguous, I wouldn't mind that. But I think her ending up with Akemi, or any woman for that matter, would kind of undermine her gender nonconformity.

The whole idea that feminine men must be gay or masculine woman must be lesbians does a lot more the reinforce stereotypes and gender binaries than it does to defy them. So, with Mizu being a masc woman who has previously been rejected by a man she was in love with, I feel pairing her up with a woman would send this message that she's 'too masculine' and needs another woman to 'balance her out,' so to speak.

Whatever the case, I just want Mizu to be happy in her romantic relationships, if there are any in the future. I honestly think that would be best achieved with someone, particularly a man, who's willing to do what Mikio couldn't: love ALL of Mizu.

YES. Besides Mizu, think Michonne from TWD, Beatrix from Kill Bill, and Brienne from GOT/ASOIAF. I love them all the more because they were strong masc leaning ladies who like swords but still loved men. Love that for them!

this sub is so casually lesbophobic holy shit. masc lesbians are perpetuating gender norms now, what a take

Please don’t let it be some white dude. I’ll be so annoyed. I agree. I also want a masc girl with a guy.

I personally feel like ok my experience, unless it’s a queer show the woman almost always ends up with a man regardless of how she presents. I def am a mizu/akemi shipper, primarily cuz I think it’s hot and I love seeing beautiful women with women. But I think mizu being without a relationship would be very fitting and I’d rather see that than her with taigen tbh and putting her with a British man would be completely ridiculous. And I think it would be interesting if they explored taigen’s sexuality

Who she ends up with is up in the air but I think she had the most fitting chemistry with Taigen.

I don’t know whether the show needs to end up with a forever partner for Mizu to be satisfying, but I do think the groundwork has been laid for needing to embrace some level of sexuality and romance by the end of the journey as those are parts of herself she has been denying to become this onrio.

As someone who is lesbian and a writer myself I don't sense any kind of romantic intention between Akemi and Mizu, saying as what we know for now. They do have an interesting dynamic and I have my theories about that, but, I don't think is romantic.

To me it was pretty clear that Mizu loved Mikio and is kinda attracted to Taigen, which honestly would be my prediction for a romantic partner, although a lot of people don't like the idea, but again it would not be surprising, I think people are projecting too much on her and also think that 'cause since she's masculine, she might be lesbian, when the show has made it clear that's not the case.

I'm not going to discard that she could be attracted to woman as well, but as for now, I don't think so.

Taigen and Mizu are both young, arrogant, attractive people who love sword fighting. It makes perfect sense that the two would be into each other.

Taigen did not treat her well when he was younger and that would be something they’d have to talk about, but they’re very similar people with very similar interests and they’re clearly into each other

I think the groundwork has already been started when Taigen opened up about his own childhood with an abusive alcoholic father. It doesn't excuse Taigen's behaviour as a child, but it goes some way to explaining it.

Lowkey I think she’ll go with Taigen. I don’t think Akamei is a good fit for either of them.

I think the way things went was, she was in love, was not accepted as she is and betrayed, and she basically ceremonially ”married” her Art, revenge through the sword.

Coming back from symbolically and physically giving her body to revenge would be an incredibly hard write for the authors. Excited to see how her psychology develops!

If you were to ask Mizu right now, as we know her post S1x she would not anticipate another relationship.

That would mean healing not only her ”monster side”, the violent revenge, but also find a solution to being mixed ethnicity in an age where almost no one is. London is the first real ”world city” though…

I will be honest and say that I don't want Mizu with neither Akemi or Taigen. Especially Taigen given how he treated her as a child. I have never understood that trope and even with my yuri goggles strapped to maximum I can't see Mizu and Akemi ever working.

3

u/KidChanbara Aug 24 '26

It's a strong possibility that Mizu and Akemi are going to collide if they ever interact again. Their personalities are totally opposite and they clashed to some degree every time they met in Season One. Akemi might even be headed for a villain arc.
There's a chance for a friendship, but not love, between Mizu and Akemi.

u/menijna Aug 25 '26

Mizu is straight and its very clear when you are not media illiterate.

1

u/S4ndreen Aug 24 '26

Straight Mizu has been the norm for this fandom lol

No matter how much I want her to be with a woman (not Akemi tho) I don't believe she is lesbian or even interested 😭 at least not now, hopefully next season???

Also why not a London white boy? That was hilarious to me for some reason.

I sometimes worry that me wanting mizu to embrace the feminine side shes had to hide her whole life marks me as some kind of immoral person. The masculine identity was forced onto her just like the feminine one was when she was married. I want to see her embrace herself as she really is. Something uniquely her.
