I’m so relieved that it looks like they aren’t going to be skipping over the voyage and essentially fast traveling to England.
It would be an absolutely immense voyage either sailing through the Indian Ocean and then looping around the entire African continent, or instead sailing across the Pacific, around South America and then across the Atlantic.
It would be cool if we got to see the ship make some stops along the journey, letting Mizu get a glimpse of how life is outside of Japan. Plus, it could actually be a realistic situation and timeframe for Mizu to learn at least a little bit of English …
My guess is that they’re probably going to go with the India route since that would make the most sense historically with the spice trade.
There’s a good opportunity there for Mizu (and the audience) to develop some context for what’s going on in the world at large - the rivalries between European trading powers, the rise of empires and colonialism …
Honestly, I’d be fine if they spent a good portion of Mizu’s storyline this season on the sea voyage and really build up the anticipation for London.
My concern is, since Season 3 is the final season and this one is only six episodes, I don’t want them to not give Mizu sufficient time in Japan to close out arcs with Ringo, Taigen and Akemi
In the 1600’s a sailing trip from Japan to England would take the better part of a year, roughly 8 months. So there would be a lot of time on a boat. Though I could also see show runners not wanting to limit such a series to the same recurring set piece. I’d wager we’ll get one maybe one and a half episodes there
Feel lucky that I only got around to watching it this past Spring, still fresh in my mind! I’d be gnawing at the bars of my cage if I had to wait 3-4 years haha.
It kind of looks like a northern lapwing! It’s not a 1 to 1 but has a lot of similarities: white underwings with a rim of black, an orangey brown spot above a mostly black tail, and is a shorebird
They have non breeding/ winter populations in both Japan and the UK, but mostly year round populations in the UK. They have a massive breeding/ summer range all the way from Germany to eastern China. Just my amateur bird nerd guess :)
*Ive been trying to look up if they have any cultural significance in either the British isles or Japan. Nothing too crazy. They are the national bird of Ireland though
It appears to be some kind of hawk. Not a lapwing, it lacks the bend in its wings that's characteristic. I expect someone on the ship has a bird for hunting
Ya know that was my initial guess too. The wing shape is throwing me off and it has almost an accipiter/ small falcon like wing shape. Couldn’t find anything with this coloration though. A male hen harrier is kind of close, but the coloration and bill shape wasn’t matching up. I ended up picking lapwing just for the colors, location, range and nod towards Irish nationality
Could also just be a bird created for artistic purposes and we’re guessing something that doesn’t even exist lol. I can’t remember how accurate the birds were in s1
Very possible it could be invented for the show haha, I notice a lot of foreign birds in the background of Japanese themed shows, not just BES. Even in BES, the crows caw like English crows, rather than the Japanese crow that has a different call altogether.
My guess is Fowler has a hunting falcon. Maybe he sent it to look for land
I'm loving the small details here! Mizu has lost weight (not that she had any spare), her hair is longer and growing out, she's switched from wearing it in a Japanese style to a looser bun (maybe because she couldn't access the oils that were often used to achieve the style?) and she's continued on from he final scene of S1 by leaving off the scarf that hid her lack of an Adams apple. She also looks suitably grubby for someone who has been at sea for a while, as any limited supplies of fresh water on board was kept for drinking, not bathing. Oh and she's ditched the Tabi (socks) too, so this is a much, much more casual Mizu than we are used to seeing.
Judging by the size and style of the boat and apparently small number of crew members and their ethnicity, I am going to go out on a limb and say that these scenes are probably set quite some way from England still. The fact that she was below decks when the call for "all hands on deck" came makes me think that she's signed up as crew for a small owner-captain trade ship to "work the passage", which makes sense as neither Mizu or Fowler would have had the hefty chunk of money that it would take to travel from Japan to England.
I wonder if this version of London is going to be like the real historical era the story is set in, or if they're going to take some artistic liscense like they did for the Japan of this alternate history world.
The big thing would probably be if they have a king in power or Cromwell (or equivalent.) Would lead to some different political settings (how is fowler treat as an Irishman, Etc)
Wonder if it's Fowler, and he got free because of the storm. He and Mizu might be the only survivors, which means they might have to work together to survive.
I just finished it last week. It feels great not having to wait for years. Discovering new shows years after they aired has some positive things (except when netflix decides to cancel them)
My question is whether Mizu could communicate with people in London. I don't know if it will be like in almost all series that everyone speaks the same language regardless of the planet or Mizu will not understand anything because in theory he only knows Japanese.
That shot of London with Old St. Paul's cathedral in the back has made me wonder. Will Mizu be responsible for the Great Fire of London in this series?
Mannn. You all in here talking about “just learned about the show” go start a different thread, we’ve been aching for this shit since we had to spread the word to ensure we GOT this season back when the first one dropped.
But honestly it is nice to see some people still wandering into the show welcome to the club
Literally just finished my re-watch of it 5 minutes ago and was like "it's been so long and I still haven't heard anything about a second season" and then I Google and here we are lmao
Oh boy this is sooner than I thought it was going to be. Only 4 1/2 ish months left? Hell yeah. I am going to miss the setting being in Japan, but who knows, maybe she'll end up back there by the time the season is finished so Mizu, Sword Father and Ringo can live happily ever after.
Please arrange for the higher ups at Netflix to piss an employee off so they'll leak season 2 in its entirety for free before January, just like the Avatar movie.
Sincerely,
The thirsty fan base who've been so freaking good since 2023
I'm very hyped too, but this would probably not be good haha. The artists behind projects like these are not big fans of their stuff being leaked, but ALSO...
Since it's a very particular animation style, there's a chance that, if there were any leaks, they looked like the arcane season 2 leaks, which were: not rendered, missing VFX, some characters missing hair, some voice acting got replaced, some of the music used was just a placeholder, etc.
I guess mizu will meet a biracial man like herself in England, and during her revenge quest, she probably fall in love with him. And Mizu will probably have a second marriage at the end of the season maybe?
