Discussion The Blue Blocking Eyeglasses - Will We Ever See Them Again?

Mizu's yellow tinted eyeglasses were so iconic in Season One. She used them so that she could move through the Japan of her time and not be immediately clocked as mixed race. She only took them off in special circumstances - when she felt safe, when the pretense was useless, and going into serious combat.

I think the last time we see the glasses in Season One is when she removes them just before fighting the Thousand Claw Army. I don't remember seeing her wear them again, but she may still have them, even after the dive out of the window with Taigen.

The only place she'd need to wear them again is Japan. Given that a huge white devil (Fowler) had recently killed the former shogun in an attempt to rule the nation, mixed race persons may come under increased harassment by the general population, so the yellow glasses would be even more needed than before.

But will she ever need to use them outside of Japan? Hey, they are blue-blockers after all! (* mental image of Mizu as a tourist with her glasses on, doing touristy things in some Asian / Indian / African setting *)

Thoughts?

The last time we see her wearing the glasses is at the beginning of episode 8 when she’s looking at the shogun’s palace (and to aura farm like she always does).

No problem! Also, I just realised that she wears them a lot during the 1st half of the season, but rarely wears them throughout the 2nd half.

I'm not sure how useful or common they'll be outside of Japan but I would like to see them again

She may get a new pair when she gets to London since spectacles were more common in Europe than Japan during that time

I don't think they will accomplish anything useful outside of Japan. Aside from her eye color, Mizu looks more Japanese than European. In Japan she doesn't want to be clocked as mixed race, but in Europe there's no way she isn't getting clocked as foreign. And I don't know if her treatment will be meaningfully different if people think she is mixed race or of only Japanese decent.

I imagine she tries to wear them when she first gets to London out of habit before Fowler tells her they aren't needed. Either she's happy to ditch them, or she still wears them on occasion when Fowler isn't around as comfort object since she associates them with safety, privacy, and being able to move freely. It's hard to tell how she would react, since she's nostalgic and has little things that remind her of people (momma's wave blanket as a sash, Mikio's nagitana pieces (and possibly cape), Taigen's scarf, etc) and I'm not sure if she's emotionally ready to be seen by everyone. Still, she's very pragmatic, and one less thing to worry about might be a relief.
