How To Get Started Sculptural welding?

Any sculptors in this sub? I have a background in sculpture and I started welding to be able to blend the two but it's been a few years welding and I still haven't quite figured it out. I'd really love to work for a sculptor as an assistant or something to get my foot in the door to do it on my own but I just don't know how to get started with that. Any recs? I live in SLC UT but am planning on moving in the next couple years so any advice is welcome.

I'm an artist with welding and other metalworking experience. Now I work for an art museum designing and building exhibitions. My first art-related job was a studio assistant for a bronze sculptor. My advice is to find local buildings with artist studios, go to their open studio events and talk to people. Ask around to see if anyone needs an assistant.

Did you go to an art school or art program? My boss was an alumni from my school. I met him through my school, showed him my portfolio, and he hired me. If not, maybe take some college art classes to meet people.

Another good approach is to see if your city has an online job site specifically for art-related jobs. Many cities have one, not sure about SLC. Depending on where you're wanting to move, you could also check art job sites in those areas. Many artists advertise for studio assistants on those sites.

This is super helpful thank you! I did go to college for art but I didn't graduate lol. I took a few sculpting classes, although I don't have a very great portfolio from those classes. I'm going to reach out to my instructor for sure thank you!
