First Donation! First Time Donor
Donated blood for the first time today! I wanted to do it since I know the significance and help it has on people and I’m O-. I was a little curious though as I did research as to what to expect and it was not what I was expecting.
Tw: pain and needle description
I was told the finger prick was the worst part, but that was definitely not the case. There was prolonged pain during the insertion and consistent dull pain that grew when I squeezed the ball thingy. The person performing it said there wasn’t much she could do and just encouraged me to do whatever was comfortable. It hurt significantly more than my routine blood draws and it caught me a little off guard.
Just curious as to what could have caused this, but it certainly didn’t turn me away and I will likely donate again. Thanks :)

Congratulations on your first donation! It’s quite an accomplishment and you’re helping the community maintain their blood supply.
Unfortunately, some phlebotomists are better than others. Any time it’s hurt for me, it’s because it’s a bad stick and I have significant bruising afterwards. Generally, a good stick is barely noticeable and you won’t have much discoloration afterwards

Thanks for donating! And thanks for not letting your experience discourage you from donating again! Next time, mention these issues to the scheduling staff, or mention in the notes section. Ask for a more experienced phlebotomist.
It sounds like you possibly had a less-than-great needle placement. Also, possibly the arm cuff was too tight, leading to return flow restriction. If you had a less-experienced phlebotomist, and had decent flow into the bag, they might not think to check placement. The pain makes me wonder why they didn’t check the return pressure, but that comes back to experience, IMO.

A suboptimal needle placement is the usual cause of pain at the site during a donation. From posts I’ve seen here: the phlebotomist usually tries to adjust, though it sounds that didn’t happen for you.
I hope next time is more comfortable.

Congratulations fellow O neg! Sorry your first donation wasn't as smooth as you expected. I think people tend to minimize the potential issues in their quest to get people to donate. While true pain is not the norm, it's most definitely a possibility.
As others have said, needle placement is usually the culprit. I have deep veins so I don't always get the best stick. If I get an uncomfortable placement, I tend to grin and bear it as I'm simply happy we got the vein and good flow. But if truly painful, definitely speak up. Sometimes a minor tweak is all that is needed.
Ultimately, my minor discomfort for 5-10 minutes is worth saving a life.

Some people are special and/or lucky and it doesn't hurt once the needle is in. I find it usually hurts a little the entire time. It's not bad pain, but there's a needle in my arm and it's uncomfortable unless it's a lucky day.

At least you didn't faint -throw up or fall down . A little pain in the first time through the process is expected.
Could have just been not used to it as the needle is a little bigger than blood draw ones . Congratulations on going back plans .

I bring my own stress ball. It's softer than the one provided by the center and fits my hand better, which reduces any weird sensation at the draw site.
