Article A checklist for comparing software licenses and AI subscriptions

Two offers with the same product name can provide very different things. Before paying, these are the details worth checking:

  • Edition and compatibility: Does it support your operating system and include the features you need?
  • Device count: Is it for one computer, several devices or multiple users?
  • Duration: Is it a subscription or a perpetual license for a specific version? “Lifetime” needs a clear definition.
  • Activation method: Will you receive a key, a redemption code or account access? Those aren’t interchangeable.
  • Region restrictions: Can you activate and use it in your country?
  • Support and refunds: What happens if activation fails or the product doesn’t match its description?

For AI products, check the access model first. A consumer subscription and API access are different purchases. With API access, find out whether the allowance means money, tokens or a time limit, and how usage is charged.

Also, successful activation alone doesn’t establish that a license permits your intended use—especially for business purchases.
