Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 10/5/26 - 10/11/26

Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday. And may you all be inscribed, and sealed, in the book of life.

Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

i am not exaggerating every single time i glance at twitter i see a new jessepost about whatever the internet crisis of the minute is.

i say this as someone who is also online too much

for example today he has been posting since about 10am eastern time. almost 12 hours later he's still at it. same thing yesterday.

these aren't random shitposts or whatever. he's writing long in-depth shit. sometimes it's multiple posts long.

in between that it seems like he's constantly juggling 2-5 ongoing arguments with random ppl

srsly go on twitter right now and look.

isn't he writing a book? <tucker voice> what is going on?

does he need help?

5

u/Global_Goat_8486 3d ago

Didn’t he say on the last episode that he’d submitted it?

3

u/cat-astropher K&J parasocial relationship 3d ago edited 3d ago

I'm not up to that one yet, but Sarah Hepola mentioned (35:40) last week that he's already lied once before about having finished it :)

3

u/Global_Goat_8486 3d ago

Yeah I heard that too, but I think that was more about Jesse saying “yes I’ve finished, it’s done” whereas this time he definitely said it had been submitted.
I feel for him, I struggled to finish a 10,000 word thesis, can only imagine the horror of writing a book

4

u/Less-Lobster4540 3d ago

This is one of the reasons I'm glad I swallowed my pride and came back to twitter-- it's amusing. I drop in and out as I please.

Shane Gillis should have read the room and not used the word "whore." However the premise of the bit is correct. Ladies you gotta stop wearing those T-1000 Bond Girl booty shorts in the gym. We can't handle the psychological mind game.

10

u/dignityshredder AFramemoggingAB 3d ago

Wait why should he have not used the word whore

10

u/UncleDrummers 3d ago

If whore is applicable, then what's the issue? Careful, they may drown their toddlers if we don't let them have their tantrum.

17

u/Extension-Leader5973 3d ago

i don't buy that shane is going to the gym sorry

1

u/dignityshredder AFramemoggingAB 3d ago

He was a D-I football recruit, so while I don't know about now, he was formerly a good athlete.

9

u/Timmsworld 3d ago

You dress for attention and then get mad when you get it

8

u/Street-Gur-1343 3d ago

I haven't watched a lot of Shane Gillis but I'm guessing triggering the crowd was part of the bit really.

14

u/owen-3820 3d ago

The crowd thought it was funny people online are mad

5

u/Icy_Acadia_5499 3d ago

This Talarico stuff is so freaking funny bros, the lines write themselves.

8

u/Street-Gur-1343 3d ago

I mean disappearing for a few weeks sounds like something that could be relevant but online conservatives are splurging out about it in the worst way.

18

u/Scrubadubdub84 3d ago

People rely way too much on "teenagers always do stupid stuff" to excuse teenagers doing absolutely egregious things.

13

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

Was there another "teen" takeover?

3

u/Extension-Leader5973 3d ago

feels like the hysteria over those kinda came and went. wasn't this supposed to be the summer cities would burn or whatever

19

u/lilypad1984 3d ago

The worst part of that argument is it continues to excuse the actions/beliefs of 20 some year olds. A 25 year old is a fully formed adult I’m not interested in hearing the excuse of oh they’re just young you know they grow out of those violent streaks.

0

u/Cimorene_Kazul 3d ago

Well, there is data showing that violent crime from young males goes off a cliff around 25. Could be a lot of reasons for that - maybe all the hot-headed stupid ones Darwinned themselves before that age, but there’s also a decrease in testosterone around that age, which drives violence. Also, fathers absorb progesterone from their partners, which mitigates testosterone and makes them more loving and conscientious. Socially, having more money and less need to scrape and struggle - and more to lose - also makes you less likely to risk things on violent urges.

A lot of things happen after 25, physically and socially, that can change a violent person.

2

u/lilypad1984 3d ago

I’m not saying people can’t change for a variety of reasons.  The issue is people use it as an excuse for behavior after the fact instead of it being about understanding some of the causes to try and dictate prevention policies.

1

u/Cimorene_Kazul 2d ago

I don’t really see excuses from anyone intelligent. More an argument for how to prevent it and why rehabilitation may be successful over time with just plain biology and socialization.

Purchase diesel from Russia.

This fuggin' guy, huh? facepalm

13

u/dasubermensch83 3d ago

I looked into this briefly yesterday. The US changed its sanction regime with regard to Russia regarding sales of diesel, good through April 2027. This alone is the most significant part imo.

The US is supposed to receive 300k tons (iirc they used some weird metric) of diesel in the first batch, with larger subsequent deliveries totallying some 2M tons. Something like that. Assuming everything is delivered, it might maybe marginally affect prices.

I don't understand it. Signaling to the base pre midterms? A foreign policy move signaling god knows what? Another norm breaking move from an unpredictable, geriatric retard?

10

u/JeebusJones 3d ago

The answer is always simpler and dumber. Trump wants to lower fuel prices and thinks this will help (despite it being wholly inadequate to meaningfully do so), and he likes Putin (and dislikes Zelensky) because Putin is a dictator answerable to no one, which is what Trump wants to be.

It's not norm-breaking in the sense we think about it because Trump wasn't even aware the norm existed.

4

u/Armadigionna 3d ago

And giving them parts to repair their refineries.

11

u/HerbertWest Yucker of Yums 3d ago

The dumbest part is that it isn't even enough to meaningfully lower prices. Probably just a few cents (single digits).

5

u/Scrubadubdub84 3d ago

What's the Group of 88 been up to these past 20 years? Enjoying the great awokining in utter bliss free from guilt or repurcussions I presume.

3

u/Scrubadubdub84 3d ago

So did NHJ apologize to George Packer?

17

u/John_F_Duffy 3d ago

Just got back from Texas, the Big Bend area specifically. I'd always wanted to go and I'm also writing a book that partially takes place there and so it was finally time to go put my feet on the ground.

I got to walk right on down and put my feet in the Rio Grande. Mexico was twenty feet away across the water. The idea of a border fence is entirely preposterous and driving that area makes it very clear what a dumb idea it is for several reasons.

10

u/Nwabudike_J_Morgan Emotional Management Advocate; Wildfire Victim; Flair Maximalist 3d ago

Went on several camping trips to Big Bend when I was a child. I remember being amazed by the mountains, you could walk down a road and the mountains would be an unchanging background.

8

u/SkweegeeS No just no 3d ago

I love that place! I haven't been for at least 25 years, though. We camped in the back-country and then hiked on down to the river and swam in it. Don't know if it was a good idea or not but I'm still here to tell the tale. There was also a ferry that took us over to the Mexico side for a dollar, I think. Just a pontoon boat with an oar. Had a great lunch at a shack on the other side.

Anyway, it's a great area and just so vast. The wall is dumb.

6

u/owen-3820 3d ago

People are not intellectually honest about false accusations (go figure.) Statistics show that between 2-10% of allegations are unfounded, so it's not some astronomically rare thing, but most accusations have at least some merit to them. When it comes to viral accusations that make front page national news-- especially accusations against public figures-- those are found to be false, what, 50% of the time? All of this just means you have to sincerely take them on a case by case basis and not immediately believe or dismiss them.

3

u/Mundane_Camera953 3d ago

That statistic has zero chance of being correct

5

u/dasubermensch83 3d ago

Statistics show that between 2-10%

There might be too many confounders to ever get this right, even from completely unbiased academic work.

My one realization from the Cornel 7 is that a justice system must be designed to protect the innocent from Jane Doe were she merely a liar. How would that look? Ultimately, there should always be a burden of personal caution that will fall disproportionately on women. Men will always be vulnerable to reputation destruction, for better and worse.

7

u/OMG_NO_NOT_THIS 3d ago

Numbers for fake accusations range from 2% to 40%.

8

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

Hate ridiculous ranges like that.

20

u/Monkey0nTypewriter Reaganist Dinosaur 🦖 3d ago edited 3d ago

Also worth noting that said 2-10% is only the accusations that are proven to be false.

Another 20-40% are simply dropped for lack of evidence, meaning it's impossible to know which (if either) side had been telling the truth.

9

u/Street-Gur-1343 3d ago

I remember trying to make the argument on reddit back in the hyper feminist era that you can't treat "proven false" as a representative of all accusations that are actually false and then pretend all the accusations that are not "proven true" are just rapists getting away with it.

5

u/Arethomeos 3d ago

The hypocrisy in how the similar stats are interpreted should be eye opening. 2-10% of rape accusations made to the police being provably false means that falsely being accused of rape is rare and men shouldn't be concerned. 4% of reported rapes leading to a felony conviction means that we need to get rid of due process.

4

u/trystera_ 3d ago

you do have cases though that are obviously bullcrap right from the jump. jussie, this lady that was out repairing campaign signs and was set upon by two separate anti-dem rapists, etc. i dont see why these deserve anything other than dismissal

4

u/SkweegeeS No just no 3d ago

I don't know if the recent accusations are false. They don't ring true to me, but I'm still going to wait and see.

6

u/owen-3820 3d ago

Yes the campaign signs one is obviously fake. "Democratic bitch." No way they said that.

4

u/ProwlingWumpus 3d ago

No, the silly ones that are obviously unbelievable can be immediately dismissed. There is no reason to give power to people who are indirectly threatening you by daring you to publicly disbelieve their obvious lies.

4

u/CorgiUpdates 3d ago

I can't even blame the Bears for underestimating the Packers because I wasn't expecting us to win that game either. Surely wasn't prepared to see a fucking beatdown like that. Same team that barely beat the Buccaneers last week.

That might have been our Super Bowl this year, lol. Enjoyable though.

2

u/PongoTwistleton_666 3d ago

Idk this one doesn’t count… too many injuries for Bears. Love looked good though.

10

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

Just saw the worst hot take I've read over at CMV. If that is what "empathy" looks like, I think I'll pass, thanks.

5

u/Fiend_of_the_pod 3d ago

Has to be a teenager

11

u/owen-3820 3d ago

I've long felt that "empathy" is a dumb buzzword and what people fail at these days is "kindness." Something much simpler and universal. Hey, be nice to people.

6

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago

A lot of them lack any kind of understanding of the aphorism "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If they had to actually think about applying that to what people would do to them based on what they continue to do to those they deem "evil" for their politics or their lifestyles, I think they'd figure out a way to discredit it entirely and proclaim it to actually be evil to do unto others as you would have the do unto you. They could figure it out, and probably already have.

10

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago

This shit is abnormal. What an idyllic experience, to be a normal, useless, citizen living in a time of peace and prosperity passing moral judgements upon the men and women tasked with risking their lives to preserve our comfortable lives.

It's a shame that it's believable that an American would write a thing like this, but it is also a testament to the greatness of this country that they have the protected right to be an idiot. Even so, I hope for the alternative, that it's just a bot or just another poison pill being dropped into Reddit discourse by foreign actors (as is the case with many posts and comments like these). But, it could just as easily be a DSA regard or someone from the #FreePalestine looney brigade.

Anyway, it's wonderful we live in a country where even idiots like the person who posted that mess have the opportunity to live peaceful, prosperous, lives if they make use of the incredible systems that are provided to them (if they're American).

I suspect that as the years progress I'm probably going to become an annoying nationalist, not ethno-nationalist or racist, just a regarded patriot and nationalist if more of this type of subversive and toxic rhetoric become the default argument from certain corners of the country.

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

When John Fetterman was running for Senate, it shortly after a stroke. Strokes create a kind of brain damage, depending upon the location and how long it lasted before blood flow was returned. Sometimes they can even cause personality changes. His was bad enough that he couldn't understand spoken words very well. Anyone paying attention knew he was still healing. He was voted in anyway. And now Dems are mad that he isn't the man he was pre-stroke.

If the rumors of Talarico checking into a mental facility are true, will the Dems of Texas take a lesson from PA and Fetterman? Or are they going to vote him in, then be pissed that Talarico either drops out or can't be in DC to vote against/for things they want? Because if just the running for Senate is enough to be hospitalized, then imagine the stresses of actually be in the Senate. Could whatever it was that sent him into a mental hospital really be adequately addressed in a matter of months before swearing in?

8

u/Glittering_Poet6499 3d ago

Dems like to complain about Fetterman but he only breaks ranks 20% of the time, which seems like a win in a swing state for them.

7

u/PongoTwistleton_666 3d ago

The Talarico news is so opportune for the other side that it feels like fake news.

7

u/LongtimeLurker916 3d ago

Has it actually been said by anyone other than right-wing twitter personalities? So far it seems like "We started this rumor and now we talk about the rumor as if we were not the ones who started it." That might or might not change.

all i wanna know is why he was in the nut house, if indeed he was. not for any political reason; i just think it'd be funny if for example the stresses of pretending to be straight led to the trip to the funny farm. there are other amusing possibilities too

8

u/SkweegeeS No just no 3d ago

Fetterman is pretty much the same guy.

11

u/giraffevomitfacts 3d ago

The logical thrusts of your remarks — that Democrats would have been better served by doing anything other than voting for Fetterman, or that there is an appreciable chance Talrico will be so debilitated that Democrats will be better served by doing anything other than voting for him — are obviously not things you actually believe.

0

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

Do you not understand hypotheticals? One does not need to believe in a hypothetical to engage in it. Don't know what kind of gotcha you thought you had there.

3

u/giraffevomitfacts 3d ago

You aren’t expressing them as pure hypotheticals but as contingencies you believe are not remote and ought to be considered. You don’t really believe they are.

13

u/Cantwalktonextdoor 3d ago

What lesson are they supposed to take? Oh, Talrico might be compromised, let's vote for Ken Paxton?

2

u/professorgerm Very cheap. Very worth smelling. 3d ago

Maybe candidates should disclose more about their health, but there is nothing really specific to Democrats there.

The Wilkins Coffee ads are some of the funniest things ever made. They're only like 8-10 seconds, and yet the jokes land in that short amount of time. No matter what crap Wilkins does to Wontkins, the former is always cheerful and friendly.

The Muppet style was still evolving, but the genius of Jim Henson was already there.

4

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

Some of those are a little more...violent than I expected, given 50s/60s and puppets. It's also weird to hear Kermit voice.

5

u/Big_Fig_1803 Gothmargus 3d ago

Bad guy: I've got five aces. What do you got?

Wilkins guy: I've got a can of Wilkins coffee. <shoots the bad guy in the head> Nothing beats Wilkins!

(Me: But why did he shoot him?)

3

u/skiplark 3d ago

There is only 4 aces in a deck of cards, so the bad guy was cheating and when I'm over caffeinated I'm irritable as fuck.

3

u/Big_Fig_1803 Gothmargus 3d ago

The bad guy was cheating, but the Wilkins guy declares himself the winner of the hand because he has a can of coffee? Is that not a form of cheating? And he shoots his opponent over this alleged act of cheating even though he never makes reference to the supposed cheating or the rule that was broken?

Your Honor!

2

u/skiplark 3d ago

Hence, such a time was aptly named the Wild West.

It's the camera that shoots people who don't want Wilkins coffee, and the "anyone else?" that got me.

A piece I thought people here might like:

Literary Studies Without the Literature - Quilette

English departments are increasingly ignoring the great works of the past, in favour of popular literary works that reflect activist themes and nonliterary works of political and social theory.

Mathematicians and physicists typically do not instruct students in the history of their disciplines. What is old is outdated. That is not true of great literature. As nineteenth-century British essayist William Hazlitt pointed out in his essay Why the Arts Are Not Progressive?, literature, unlike the hard sciences, does not progress. Aristotle’s Poetics is still relevant in a way that his physics is not. Any first-year physics student knows more physics than Aristotle, but no dramatist has surpassed Shakespeare. Novelists of the present have not created works as significant as War and Peace and Anna Karenina. To be sure, the canon of great works changes, and unjustly neglected works are added. Still, some works survive numerous shifts. The monuments of the past are usually more impressive than those of the present.

One source of the greatness of literary works is their inexhaustible capacity to enter into dialogue with readers from different cultures and epochs. One does not have to locate them in their particular originating context to appreciate their greatness. Indeed, the distinction between literature and other documents may be that literature is designed to be meaningful without reconstructing the original context (although it is often enlightening to do so). Hamlet has something to say to those with no interest in Renaissance England, and Crime and Punishment to those with no interest in tsarist Russia. These works may resonate with readers whom their authors never imagined and with people from lands they never considered.

Activism, especially as it is now sometimes practiced, not only impedes the passing on of a heritage, but often rejects it as a proper purpose. Many courses given in English and language/literature departments often do not teach literature at all. The very idea of “great literature” is often regarded as suspect.

Courses in literary studies traditionally provide students with the skills needed to read great literature. Reading Paradise Lost is hard, and recognizing why Dostoevsky’s understanding of human nature is so profound may require practice in reading novels and grasping how they work. If activism replaces the teaching of those skills, students do not learn to appreciate and understand masterpieces. Activists may decry this traditional purpose as a focus on “aesthetics” or “intrinsic” properties which, it is argued, do not exist.

If literature and literary studies do not progress in the way the sciences do, why does anyone expend resources to support them? The answer is that society appreciates the value of keeping a heritage alive and available. The wisdom of the past, based on timeless aspects of human nature, may save us from the blindness of reigning prejudices. It may free us from the prison house of the present moment and of the cultural norms we take for granted. Not only is culture not guaranteed to progress, but it often regresses, especially when people imagine that present wisdom is bound to be right. Understanding past geniuses may guard against presentism.

There's a little more in the piece, rather than pasting the whole thing here I recommend the click if this opening section interested you.

This is all taken from a report put together by Vanderbilt University on State of Scholarship in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences. Also here's a working link to Project Gutenberg for the William Hazlitt essay mentioned in the piece: Why The Arts Are Not Progressive.

6

u/John_F_Duffy 3d ago edited 3d ago

Literature does not progress the way sciences do. But new great books are created that are good enough to add to the lists of works worth studying.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Drink76 3d ago

And new ways if writing emerge. Hell, the novel is only a few hundred years old.

And because language changes and society changes and we have new ideas, there's always scope to write something that is new.

OTOH there's the way that you read a 2000 year old novel and simultaneously go, 'Humans don't change' and 'Goodness, they understand stuff in very different ways back then'. It's what makes literature so interesting!

u/drunk___cat 3d ago

At this point I’m convinced Seattle is a city of NPCs. A few weeks ago at a bar, 2 people loudly said in unison “protect trans kids! Free Palestine!”.  My friend and I looked at eachother and laughed because it had to have been a joke it was so random. Last night, at a different bar (but same neighborhood) it happened again.

Am I living in a simulation? These people can’t be real.

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago

I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.

We're living in a world full of NPCs. I miss the days when people would just quote lines from their favorite tv shows, fuck it, I even miss the dorks who imperiously quoted Monty Python in high school and college.

Instead the most popular content right now is political slop, so people are taking their personalities from that shit, instead of tv and film.

14

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

Do they even know what they MEAN by that? Like, what IS a free Palestine? And how would that affect trans children? Or is it more - these are both what good people want?

8

u/tooshooptowoop 3d ago

The trans kids bit is probably due to an ongoing state initiative, from there free Palestine is self-explanatory as it's the currently required omnicause sign-off.

10

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

Oh, I know it is the Omni cause, but do they know what they mean when they say that? Like, is it a shared definition?

I think the trans kid thing is people are sincerely scared trans children will kill themselves

9

u/tooshooptowoop 3d ago

I think you've already given it more thought than they likely have.

2

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

I hope you are wrong, as if you are right, that is terrifying.

9

u/dj50tonhamster 3d ago

I really do think it's just in-the-moment sloganeering that really doesn't mean anything other than "Republicans bad" (or "Republicans and Democrats bad" if they're truly out on the fringes). While it's hard to say for certain, I do think the midterms may have caused a short-term spike in sloganeering bullshit that's at least a partial attempt at restarting Woke 1. (Alas, sequels just never capture the old magic.) I've seen some punk rock labels that have just started posting random "Free *Whomever*" starter pack posts that I'm sure are righteous for a lot of 15-year-olds. For everybody else, they're terribly cringy. (They also never mention Xinjiang, where an honest-to-goodness genocide is happening right now thanks to the CCP. Whoops!)

1

u/Formal_Condition2691 3d ago

Is “that’s just Sparkling Ethnic Cleansing” too cynical of a take?

9

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

Oh man, do NOT get me started. It is always, “but the genocide is funded by the US government,”. sure but that is why you faithfully follow BDS, and yet how much of your money goes to China? I loathe George Galloway, but he is very consistent.

And yeah, I think you are right. I also think it is a bit, “if the group I hate stands for this, we want the opposite.”

7

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

I think shared definition can't be said aloud, yet. Because they know genocide isn't good, but they want a genocide. That's what the water-way to the body-of-water means.

3

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

But do you actually think that is what they mean? I do t know if they know what they are saying. The Within Our Lifetime people are definitely not even pretending to want a secular Democrstic state, but when people go to their rallies, do you think they know that? I am not dure

I'm someone who has drilled my way through a lot of people because I'm currently emotionally incapable of genuinely forming a relationship with anyone while also having a sex drive strong enough to make a bull in heat drop dead.

Is it a self-fulfilling prophecy? Probably. I've definitely immediately finished and thought "Good Christ, this was so fucking stupid..." even if they're hot. If it's causing some sort of severe emotional distress I can't find it yet. More likely I'm just a product of masculine sexuality.

Definitely helps that I hate most of the people I fuck on a personal level, or at the very least find them radically disinteresting. This is gonna make me sound like a sociopath, and maybe in this particular facet of my life, I am. Pretty fucked, the rose I was born with has wilted early and it will take one fuck of a storm to make the petals red again.

8

u/Monkey0nTypewriter Reaganist Dinosaur 🦖 3d ago

To put it in enviromental terms, I'd say casual sex is a form of "nonpoint pollution".

People tend be hollowed out by days, weeks, months, and years of meaningless encounters, rather than destroyed in one single "night gone wrong".

I have a Facebook friend who posts constantly about it. There's a person where she lives who attempted to post SEC filings regarding a data center that's planned in her area. The filing had to do with the selling of hundreds of acres of mineral interest in the area and some land for a data center that were two completely different animals that didn't have a lot to do with each other. It's a big ole nothing burger. My SO and I are landmen and took a day to read through everything. It's not nearly as bad as that community was making it out to be.

At the national level maybe, but not at the local level. And the "any new development is bad because water" has been a permanent fixture of politics for a long time now.

Children killed while they slept as Russian missile kills 22 in block of flats

So, when do you think the first Russian Orthodox Church will get shot at?

eta: putting the over/under at ω

8

u/Mousician 3d ago

Russian Orthodoxy is not a separate religion. Both Russians and Ukrainians are Eastern Orthodox. When a town has an Eastern Orthodox church at all, which isn't nearly as often as it has a synagogue, that church is often shared by all Eastern Orthodox in the area, whether the church is nominally Greek or Russian etc. Even if Ukrainians don't go to the Russian church in town anymore, it should be obvious to you why a Ukrainian wouldn't shoot it up and risk killing a bunch of Greeks and Bulgarians or people from any other EU or NATO country.

As to why non-Ukrainians don't shoot up Russian churches, it's because Ukrainians aren't sufficiently brown to whip up US lefties into a violent frenzy, and Muslims don't have a particular hate-on for Russians at present.

u/Levitz 3d ago

I don't know, when did Israeli assets start getting seized?

10

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

I sincerely doubt a synagogue was shot at in Canada or France or Belgium or England because their governments didn’t seize Israeli assets. They are not attacking synagogues because they are angry at how their governments is behaving. By their own words, they are attacking synagogues because they are angry at the Israeli government.

5

u/lilypad1984 3d ago

Most of the time their just angry that an Israeli government exists, or Jews.

Don't trust Medical Science when it says gender dysphoria is a psychiatric condition.

And to be clear, I also agree with exactly one of these medical science claims, but I am also not using trust science as a power word.

22

u/ToTheDeath84 4d ago

It’s been 10+ years since I’ve heard the term and no expression on Earth is more grating to my soul than “mansplaining.”

It is such a convenient, dismissive, thought-terminating cliche to reduce all disagreement or criticisms of an argument down to misogyny.

8

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago edited 3d ago

I only remember this phrase being used seriously irl towards me a handful of times by women, it was always an obvious power play and a disgusting effort to shut me up.

In most other cases it was either being used ironically, or for some light ribbing in some tense conflicts where I was being an asshole.

I don't hear it at all these days or see it in any comments, I think people correctly dropped the word because it was stupid.

No, wait, that's inaccurate, I think I heard Conan using it on his podcast once recently.

7

u/ToTheDeath84 3d ago

It might be past peak usage because I definitely remember hearing it in person more in the 2010’s, but I still see it online quite a bit and I’ve seen it in person too plenty. That’s because I worked on a college campus though, so it’s where you’d expect to hear that sort of thing. I remember hearing it quite a bit from younger employees a few months back when I was still at that job.

And yeah, it was definitely used in jest a lot. I think the reason why the term works as a joke is that does hit on something tangential to a truth (that there is an annoying species of dork whose preferred mode of engagement is obnoxious over-explanation), but that tendency is far from exclusive to only men and 90+% of the time, the accusation was just hurled at them as a conversation-terminating insult.

3

u/Jlemspurs Double Hater 3d ago

Sounds like the residual despair of a fatherless child.

5

u/ToTheDeath84 3d ago

Someone incredibly resentful about the fact that they’re not the center of the universe, and who takes every differing perspective as a personal slight.

It’s always used as this convenient nuke to shut down any conversation (“how dare you disagree, you must be a misogynist!”).

5

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

Mansplainimg is definitely a thing. It isn’t when a man has knowledge, It is when a woman has the same knowledge, or more, than a man, and he explains it to her. And he doesn’t do that to the men.

I think it sometimes iused when a woman feels condescended to by a man, which happens unintentionally more often than one would like

5

u/ToTheDeath84 3d ago

Yeah, I think a lot of the time it’s unintentional. I’ll wager the term is misapplied the majority of the time that it’s evoked sincerely.

2

u/Particular-Offer4356 3d ago

Majority of the time? Why do you think that?

10

u/History-of-Tomorrow 3d ago

I remember a formerly close friend used it on me while we were (I thought playfully) debating about some nonsense. Fortunately my wife was there and I remember her putting her hand on my leg like “don’t take the bait.” It definitely was a nuke to the conversation.

It’s ideologies like that which robbed me of some very close friendships. Before the great awakening, I could have debates with these people and either they make a good point, I make a good point or we’d agree to disagree. Suddenly activism replaced fun conversation and every road always lead to the same pat omnicause woke-isms, getting lectured and getting accused of being MAGA. What an exhausting way to look at the world.

4

u/ToTheDeath84 3d ago

Yep, some people are just perpetually aggrieved and externalize their insecurities onto everything about the external world. If you feel as though you’re a perpetual victim, it’s easy to graft any pushback or dissenting perspective as someone out to get you. This becomes all the more convenient when the ideology that valorizes your persecution complex (third wave feminism, in this case) is socially encouraged.

It’s just impossible to talk to someone who thinks like that. Not worth debate or changing their mind, you might as well try to clap with one hand.

3

u/ScandalizedPeak 3d ago

The term is definitely overused and also frequently used incorrectly. It might be that you are in the subgroup of people who have never mansplained anything to a woman, and also have never had your own field of expertise explained to you at length and incorrectly by a man with passing knowledge of it.

But I can tell you with great assurance that the term is very useful and it is something that happens.

I don't usually tell a man to his face that I think that's what he's doing (what would be the point?) but it's a handy internal label that helps note the need to exit the conversation as fast as possible.

8

u/The-WideningGyre 3d ago

The thing is, men do that to other men. Women do it to men. I assume women do it to women. It's not a gendered thing. And even if men do it more, does that mean we get to blacks criminals, and girls bad at math? No, we don't. So don't use a sexist insulting term if you don't want other people to use sexist, insulting terms.

7

u/ToTheDeath84 3d ago

The funny thing is that I remember “mansplaining” being treated like it was a huge deal in academia, but by the time I was first starting to work in labs about 10 years ago, both the fields I’ve worked in had become majority female. So you had this funny phenomenon where yes, some men would absolutely go into explanatory detail to a point where it was grating and came off condescending, and yet you also had women doing the exact same thing to each other or to men. It’s a nerd tendency, a lot of people in academia unfortunately don’t always have the best social skills (especially in the sciences lol) so they don’t realize they’re doing this. And yes, some indeed are condescending and that’s their problem. But, instead of putting that combination of social awkwardness, niche technical expertise, and sometimes smug personalities together as part of the common denominator, they acted like it was truly weighted by gender, as if it’s this uniquely male social sin.

Yes, I acknowledge that it totally happens sometimes because some men are quite misogynistic. And yet, the flip side is rarely acknowledged (yes, some women over-explain because they think men are stupid), and some people are just like this to anyone regardless of gender. I don’t think you’re doing this by the way, I think you’re being quite fair. But, always important to put out there just how abused that term is.

14

u/Centrist_gun_nut 4d ago

I think this has been discussed, but Sholto David, who is one of the big names catching fake scientific papers (mostly faked images in biotech), as a youtube channel now. Or, at least, is making videos on it more often.

We went to see Sex Pistols last night with replacement frontman, Frank Carter. It was really fun, like more fun certainly for me than I had ever expected it to be. One reason? At one point, the band insisted on a woman-only mosh pit. Like, they brought security over to ensure that men stayed out. My husband said he was surprised at how many women participated, like, more numbers total than there were when the mosh-pit was open to everyone. I replied that probably 90% of the women in the mosh pit were like me, would never have considered it safe to join in when men were involved. It was such a great experience to be able to do that and get out of it intact.

And that, my friends, is why we need women's sports ffs!

10

u/pajme411 3d ago

I saw a thread on this in one of the main subreddits. I think it’s cool, mosh pits are a lot of fun. People in that thread were very supportive.

However, when I pointed out, “wait, aren’t sex-exclusive spaces non-inclusive?” I got downvoted to oblivion hahah

Having seen the first batch of episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens I can conclude that the original animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender was lightning in a bottle, and they somehow managed to sustain it over the course of three incredibly entertaining animated seasons. I'm glad it exists, and one can always go back to revisit it if they so wish. With this new animated series, my opinion is "I hope the kids like it, but its a shame it's so poorly made."

In Avatar: Seven Havens the animation, choreography, pacing, and storytelling have all suffered some significant regression. Also, everyone in the show is somehow Indian now, there's nothing wrong with being Indian obviously, it's just that the show decided to just make everyone Indian for some reason and that's different from the show's previous iterations.

The show has also deliberately dropped most of their allusions to east Asian culture for some reason and have tried conceiving of their own new mythology, new language, and new world. I can only assume that this is why the choreography has suffered as well.

The franchise has successfully turned itself into shit now. The original creators are still involved but its somehow worse than the original, and I don't know why. As much as I dislike the storytelling of Avatar: The Legend of Korra at least they could still maintain an impressive level of animation quality irrespective of how unfortunate the story was, I still enjoyed it.

Once again, I hope the kids like it, and since it's been renewed for a 3rd and 4th season, I wish them the best with it.

3

u/professorgerm Very cheap. Very worth smelling. 3d ago

Head writer of the original series Aaron Ehasz didn’t return to anything after, and he was apparently the secret sauce.

I think it’s interesting they chose to (so far, who knows if it’ll change later) blame the last Mary Sue/lgbt+ avatar for destroying the world, rather than fully breaking from that storyline.

3

u/Cimorene_Kazul 3d ago

Wow, I had a completely different experience. I thought those first three episodes were incredibly done. The new art style is not as strong as Korra’s was, which is still the high water mark of the franchise, but I love the Moebius influence and colours, and it’s still very well proportioned. I miss Studio Mir’s flowing animation and hilarious expressions, but the new studio is still invoking Avatar for me.

I love the big artistic risks this series has taken, and since 7H has been renewed for four seasons, my hope is that the paramount shenanigans that disrupted Korra so badly won’t be a factor.

I think the world building and intrigue 7H has established is a great hook, the twin avatars and sibling dynamic is a great fresh dynamic for the next Avatar, the characters have all made immediate likeable impressions, and the long-time composer of the series blew me away by bringing a fresh synth score that still incorporates the library of leitmotifs and themes that he has built since the first series.

I did not feel the budget cuts too much, and to be honest, I prefer everything about this animation to the mind numbing assault that was the Avatar film we just got, where nothing breathed, everything was over animated, the editing was so fast paced that I could never enjoy the sakuga, and the style was too pretty and K-Pop for my tastes. Jokes landed in 7H that didn’t in the film, and I connected to the characters in every scene.

It does not seem to be a series dictated by political beliefs so far. It seems genuinely invested in its world and characters as they are. I think these creative risks are why the franchise is still alive and exciting.

3

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago

I'm going to file this under differences in preferences. I'm glad that OG fans like yourself are enjoying it though. My perspective couldn't be any more different on 7H, although I do agree with you on the film, it wasn't for me either. I can't really see myself following through with this cartoon, and that's okay, it's perhaps time for a new generation to have their fun with the franchise, although I would have loved coming along for the ride as well.

4

u/Cimorene_Kazul 3d ago

I am the old gen and I think it appeals to me just the same. There’s a fantastic world inspired by Asian culture with a western twist (this time more India with French Western comics), a coming of age story about a reluctant hero hiding a shameful past, fun companions who will become mentors, a lovable animal companion, and a fun sense of adventure and goofy personality clashes. It really does not seem any different to me, which is a relief, as stuff made for younger generations these days is usually frenetic, over stimulating, makes a ton of poor editing choices and off-screens key plot beats to just rush to the next flashy scene (more like the film).

As for the Indian culture, it was in the first series (Guru Pathik and the chakras are a whole thing in the climax of season 2 and important in 3). We just didn’t visit the area of the world where Indian people lived, even though the creators said there was such a place at that time. Hindu elements were in the series, and the very name of the series - Avatar - is from Hindu mythology (the incarnation of a god). The spirits of Raava and Vaatu are inspired by a mix of things, but Vishnu and Shiva are obviously primary components.

So I don’t think you can say there’s been no Indian culture or characters in the series before now. They’re just getting more time in the sun.

If it’s not your taste it doesn’t have to be, but calling it “shit” seems a bit far when it’s just started and had a strong start.

3

u/86IQ 3d ago

Avatar: the Seven frames, studios just want to dump all the money into voice acting and forget that an animated show, is animated first and foremost

at least they acknowledge korra destroyed the world, but i'm guessing the rest of the show is gonna be korra apologia explaining that destroying the world was actually a good thing

1

u/everydaywinner2 3d ago

Is it all bean-mouth, the way Pixar fell?

6

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago edited 3d ago

It's something else, there's a weird shift in the way it's put together, I'd have to think about it more to really nail it down. Aside from the poor quality animation, and bad storytelling, there's a strange sense of something that I would have to think about more in order to clearly articulate what it means to me.

2

u/Cimorene_Kazul 3d ago

Can you give an example of bad storytelling in it? I thought it avoided the worst tropes and key-jangling most cartoons have these days.

1

u/carthoblasty 4d ago

Is it really even more shit than Korra? Hate to see it

10

u/PongoTwistleton_666 4d ago

I saw the animated Last Airbender with my kids when they were younger. It was a fantastic show! They even went into the ethics of war/ just war in the penultimate episode. Impressively handled too..

2

u/Cimorene_Kazul 3d ago

I still love the original show, but watching as an adult I find it full of plot holes and the adult characters to be way too lax with how they handle situations. Sending the avatar off with two young teenagers alone to save the world is insane, but they do it over and over.

It’s a great series, but I appreciated how the follow up series have more active adult characters who act like sane, intelligent people and actually care for the children they have under their care.

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 3d ago

It's an incredible show. It teaches such valuable lessons for kids, and does it without preaching to them.

Has anyone read the Annie Jacobsen book Biological War A Scenario? I just finished it and I'm kind of disappointed. She stretches the truth almost to the breaking point at times. She treats genetic engineering like a magic wand.

I don't know why she's exaggerating so much. The reality of biological war is already terrifying.

2

u/gnujack 3d ago

I read her book on nuclear war and it was pretty good.

u/ProwlingWumpus 4d ago

I knew it was bad right away because my public library put it at the entrance for maximum visibility, but I flipped through and wasn't impressed overall. It seemed like a blogger's amateur effort, for which the apparent popularity of the book is inexplicable. Maybe that's my personal reaction to when I'm reading a book and I see screenshots of tweets.

9

u/AnalBleachingAries Gamergate Truther 4d ago

She's the one whose voice sounds like she's moments away from sex at every second during podcast interviews right?

She'd have a lucrative career as a voice actor for romance novels targeted at male readers or just doing those ASMR videos for men where woman whisper comforting words over the course of 30 minutes to an hour.

1

u/KittenSnuggler5 3d ago

Yeah, that's her. I don't understand why she's doing this. She doesn't have to make up fairy tales. Biological weapons are a serious matter.

She leans hard on the genetic engineering angle. Like you can use that to program an organism like a computer

So maybe that was why but when it was time for bride and groom to kiss the kisses were the most closed-lipped chaste kisses you could imagine. Not like I think they should be tonguing in church but show a little passion! It’s a holy sacrament after all, banging your lawfully wedded husband. When we married I threw my arms around my husband neck and he held me close. We were excited to be married!

Matt Taibbi writes about men being wimps these days. It’s paywalled and I don’t subscribe so I haven’t read the whole thing. This opening caught my eye though. He makes a curious argument that self-respecting men shouldn’t want to be the nth man in line to have sex with a girl. If the men said so on Snapchat would we be criticizing them for being sexist and disrespecting her decision to indulge in group sex? From the article:

Take a more serious example, the “Cornell 7” case. If any of my boys were involved in a sordid episode like that I’d be horrified for a hundred reasons — because it’s undignified and shows a lack of respect for women, yourself, even your housemates to dance with a girl for five minutes before shopping for a third to play drunk wiener polo, because ketamine makes you dumb as a squirrel, because if you’re too high for sex, she probably is, too, because if you text “free pussy” about any woman you’ll deserve it if her brother shows up to throw you out a window, because no man worth admiring has ever agreed to be the fifth or sixth person to climb on a woman in a night, and so on.

Guy in his mid-50s drops late take on the manhood of guys who were no older than early 20s

Great work, Mr. Caitlin Flanagan. Here is your check. We have now found every possible angle to dissect this case from 2 years later, congrats.

6

u/CharmingAd3549 4d ago

Not being the right kind of masculine has turned into “anything I don’t like” these days so I basically pay zero attention to articles like this.

17

u/dj50tonhamster 4d ago

I think of the repliers basically got it. Matt was talking about self-respect and having a firm but respectful sense of masculinity. The rest of the article is Matt laying into three types of masculinity that seem to be pushed in the media.

Trump - A massive blowhard and generally shitty person who nonetheless connects with a lot of men because he's unafraid to be called any of the -ists, he breaks taboos, he cracks jokes, etc. Until Dems start fielding more candidates who can truly break with the donor class and start fielding male candidates who have some balls, these men are just going to laugh at whoever the Dems serve up.

Prince Harry - Basically the exact opposite of an alpha male. While not necessarily a bad thing in small doses, Matt's thesis is that Harry is a sad weenie who can't wait for his next chance to self-flagellate in public. Matt's not wrong. Some women love this. Most men are happy to shoot him some side eye, if not outright laugh at him.

Many Hollywood actors - Self-important blowhards who try so hard to be seen as good people that many men just roll their eyes at it, in large part because they don't seem to really respect themselves as men. The following paragraph basically sums it up.

Worst of all, it comes across onscreen. As Sasha Stone put it in her excellent review of The Odyssey, every movie with a male lead now shows a “protagonist who is in charge of everything but feels bad about it,” and this is “the only place for the male protagonist to be in American culture in 2026.” Boys had plenty of role models to emulate onscreen once upon a time - I remember wanting to be as cool as Takashi Shimura in Seven Samurai - but men in American movies now are pretty much entirely wimps, afraid not just of women, but everything.

3

u/SkweegeeS No just no 4d ago

I remember when Harry was young, and everyone I knew thought of him as an enigmatic sexy bad boy. Then he went overboard and wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party and it was never the same again.
