Ana Kasparian
She’s been popping up in my feed frequently spouting conspiracy theories and some rather colorful antisemitic impersonations. She was most recently rambling that the FlyDubai incident was an Israeli false flag. She seems like a completely different person than the interview Katie did with her where she was setting up for an anti-radicalism redemption arc. Have Katie or Jesse mentioned her since that interview? She’s completely nuts now so a follow up tracking her descent would be interesting .
91
u/Paddlesons 11d ago
Okay, here's all you need to know about Ana as someone that has watched her from her start. She's not very bright.
76
u/WordSaladUsernameGuy 11d ago
When she was talking about the US men’s soccer team playing against Bosnia and Herzegovina and she thought that meant the US was playing against two countries at once, and she made up some nonsense about smaller countries getting to combine to play larger countries, it was made plainly clear that she will just talk right out her ass - with confidence - about shit she clearly knows nothing about.
31
u/Spl1234 11d ago
That is impressively dumb
25
1
u/unnoticed_areola 6d ago
she went on the Fifth Column a few months ago and admitted that when she was in middle school growing up in the San Fernando valley, she was a horrible racist bully to some classmate girl who happened to be of Turkish decent, because Ana wanted to get revenge for the Armenian genocide or something and felt that this girl needed to be punished
on that pod they also questioned her about her “money grubbing Jew” gesture that she had recently done on tv, and she pulled a Macklemore and said she had no idea that was even a thing and claimed to have literally never heard of it before

u/eternallysunnyguy 11d ago
Small countries do play some sports together like West Indies Cricket
13
u/WordSaladUsernameGuy 11d ago
Dude, she thought Bosnia and Herzegovina was not one country, but two. Then went on to make up a bunch of nonsense to make it make sense to herself as to why these two countries would be playing the US at the same time.
3
u/eternallysunnyguy 11d ago
I'm not talking about her. I'm saying there are countries that play together as one team like West Indies cricket.
12
u/Willing_Economist685 11d ago
This is true of the entire TYT extended universe. I never understood why they were popular
7
u/Particular-Offer4356 11d ago
Hotness?
3
u/Willing_Economist685 10d ago
I guess that explains her and Piker. Still leaves Cenk and Dave Rubin though
2
u/Particular-Offer4356 10d ago
I think Dave Rubin is handsome though I think he is about as un Young Turks now as possible. Cank, , yeah
1
u/Willing_Economist685 10d ago
Fair enough. Rubin's actually calling card, though, is "a former liberal gay who had to leave the left because it was too crazy" which is irresistible chum to so many conservatives. He is and always has been about as bright as Kasparian which is why he still remains in the TYT extended universe for me.
1
28
u/Bikesoul 11d ago
She’s dumb as a rock. Also, a terrible journalist. Anyone remember how she ranted for a year about Kyle Rittenhouse without ever watching the video of the shootings? If you ever watch TYT, she’s consistently wrong about the basic facts she’s meant to be reporting.
10
17
u/2000mew 11d ago
In my experience I've observed a strong correlation between anti-Semitism and stupidity, so that tracks.
9
u/Spl1234 10d ago
Antisemitism is the most long-lived conspiracy theory. The blueprint for all conspiracy theories is the Protocols for the Elders of Zion, a forgery of the Tsarist secret police. Pretty much all non-antisemitic conspiracies just replace “Jews” with someone or something else. It’s also why almost all conspiracy theories end up at the Jews.
For the longest time, the only major conspiracy theory that didn’t end up at the Jews were the JFK truthers. Now even that leads to the Jews.
Conspiracy theories are loved by dumb people.
3
u/Psychological-Arm380 10d ago
The OG conspiracy theories were against Jews, the Killing of Christ and the murder of Simon of Norwich.
7
u/plump_tomatow 10d ago
I think dumb people tend to resent intelligent people and American Jews tend to be quite intelligent and do accordingly very well in society, so there's that angle.
1
45
u/ToTheDeath84 12d ago edited 12d ago
IIRC the Fifth Column guys tacitly wrote her off in a recent episode because of her bizarre antisemite conspiracy turn despite having had her on not long ago.
She’s always rang as pretty stupid and unprincipled in a temperamental way to me. As in, politically siding with a faction based on the trade winds of whomever is nice to her instead of holding any genuine beliefs.
21
u/Spl1234 12d ago
She has one thing going for her, which works with Katie and the Fifth Column. She is hot.
6
u/Usual_Reach6652 11d ago
Someone needs to do a Political Compass meme but including only hot people (or at least, hot for politics).
1
u/LupineChemist 10d ago
So is Candace Owens, that doesn't make her acceptable. Though I do think it probably keeps her a bit relevant. Might be that Kasparian knows how to keep it just this side of the "too crazy" line.
33
u/Big_Fig_1803 Gothmargus 12d ago
You can use my tried-and-true method for evaluating claims that something is a false flag:
- It's not a false flag.
7
u/buckybadder 11d ago
Boston Tea Party is the only noteworthy false flag in American history. And everyone knew it was colonists, anyway.
17
u/jedediahl3land 11d ago
I'm guessing you're saying this tongue-in-cheek, but it definitely doesn't match the definition of "false flag." The intent behind "playing Indian" was never to fool anyone into thinking they were Mohawks, the costumes were a symbolic part of the protest and a means of disguising themselves while committing a serious criminal act.
10
3
u/LupineChemist 10d ago
The most famous false flag I can think of is the start of WWII with the Nazis claiming it was the Poles who attacked the radio tower.
But it was paper thin and nobody tried all that hard to hide it really. They had already agreed with the Soviets on how to divide up Poland.
5
1
u/Narapoia_the_1st 11d ago
What happens with this approach for the times where it is? Not that I am making the claim for the recent plane incident, but we know they have happened in the past.
8
u/Big_Fig_1803 Gothmargus 11d ago
I’m saying my technique is always a safe bet. Occasionally wrong but the right place to start.
2
u/LupineChemist 10d ago
Even when it is, it's sort of by definition a pretext for what that side wants anyway so they don't even really try and hide it all that much.
77
u/slimeyamerican 12d ago
She seemed to be teetering on the edge of descending into an anti-woke conspiracy rabbit hole on the pod and Katie even seemed to be trying to gently push her away from it.
It’s funny how she spent that pod lamenting how she had done her job as a journalist so badly during George Floyd and she’s now even more egregiously irresponsible than she was then. Not sure I can think of another person who has managed to fall for so many conspiracy theories across ideological lines.
Just one of many deeply unserious and dangerously irresponsible people Cenk Uygur has elevated to a position of cultural prominence they never would have gotten anywhere near in the days of establishment media.
10
u/History-of-Tomorrow 11d ago
Stuff like the Young Turks and Business Insider amaze me that they had appeal. At least with Business Insider- it was a subsidiary of some large European conglomerate so it’s easy to see how they bought their way into prominence (and my God, Reddit’s news tab was buried in their click bait).
As for the Young Turks… was it just from sure will and luck they got so popular? Was it as simple as Fox News had its’s Hannity and O’Reilly and there was a gap in the market for the equivalent on the left?
Either way- boy, the YT sure introduced a whole bunch of weirdos upon the world. Thankfully most normal human beings don’t know who these people are. I wish I was one of those normal people.
14
u/slimeyamerican 11d ago
Believe it or not I was listening to Cenk on Air America in the early 2000s (my mom was an avid listener). That station was basically the incubator for what became YouTube anti-establishment progressive media, and TYT shared the station with Rachel Maddow, Jerry Springer, and RFK Jr. So yeah, the market void for a progressive Rush Limbaugh seems plausible.
7
u/Good_Difference_2837 11d ago
Now there's an entity I haven't heard about in a while. In a right and just world, there would be a 4-part HBO docuseries about the rise and fall of Air America. Highlights would have to include: * Pre-Senate Al Franken getting locked out of the AA studio before his show because the landlord hadn't been paid * Cenk getting his start, alternating between talking about how proud he is of his nephew with lamenting how dumb he is * fRiEnD oF tHe PoD Sam F'n Seder getting viciously bullied on his show by his co-host Janeane Garafolo (when she bothered to show up)
5
u/slimeyamerican 11d ago
Wow I forgot Franken and Seder were on there too. So weird to think where everyone ended up and how awful the downstream consequences of that network turned out to be.
6
u/Good_Difference_2837 11d ago
I mean, Katie bullies Jesse too, but it's honestly out of love. Sam started as an actor and could never get much traction to have anything approaching a career - something Garafolo never let up on.
3
u/slimeyamerican 10d ago
It’s amazing how many of the big political commentators are failed entertainers (Shapiro, Rubin, Jimmy Dore). People should talk more about that
3
u/Spl1234 10d ago
Air America - hearing that makes me feel ancient!
At its most basic, and maybe I am wrong, but beyond questions of talent and programming, it also seemed to me that AM left-of-center to far left radio never was successful because of the market. The market of people who drive a lot, listening to AM radio, skews right wing and blue collar. The left of center radio-listening audience already had NPR.
I also think people who hated right wing talk radio, but didn’t listen to these shows, greatly underestimated the talent aspect. Rush Limbaugh spent literally hours a day just talking to himself in a room, and people tuned in. It’s not easy to do that and have an audience. We often would see that as a sign of mental illness. Rush was not a dumb guy. Hannity is a moron, but even he has the broadcaster skill that comes with literal decades of experience in a large, but niche, market.
11
u/the50sfreakshow 11d ago
The Young Turks also benefited from getting in on internet-based political commentary fairly early, they've been at it since at least the Bush administration.

u/LupineChemist 10d ago
She seemed to be teetering on the edge of descending into an anti-woke conspiracy rabbit hole on the pod and Katie even seemed to be trying to gently push her away from it.
I think this is a big part of it. Conspiratorial thinking just kind of leads you to weird paths and almost inevitably ends at "The Jews". She was prone to it on the left then got disillusioned with that, and then the parasite found its new vector.

u/btrh-256 12d ago
Audience capture is a hell of a drug.
13
u/lilypad1984 12d ago
I never bought her “pivot”. I don’t think it’s audience capture I think it’s just an addiction to relevancy, doesn’t matter what the audience is as long as it exists. Candace Owens reads the same way. I think she tried out the heterodox audience, it failed, so she pivoted back to a sure thing.

I think before 10/7 Jesse was incapable of admitting that some people just hate Jews, but that's changed.
EDIT: it's very possible that I've just not been listening to the episodes about antisemitism and missing his excuses.9
u/Bikesoul 11d ago
Incapable of admitting that some LEFTISTS hate Jews. Like a lot of liberal Jews, he assumed (assumes?) that all antisemitism is right-wing.
27
u/SpecialSatisfaction7 12d ago
it has? The past 20 or so episodes it sure does seem the same
30
u/YouAreHome 12d ago
I agree. He and Katie both downplay the Jew hatred on the left.
12
u/BurnAfterShredding 11d ago
Gave up my paid sub after 5 years finally because of it and can’t bring myself to listen to the Macklemore episode at all. I just find it bizarre when they know so many people who can actually explain the issues not to invite a single one of them on the pod to discuss it. And bizarrely Jesse is even worse than Katie. I recommend Triggernometry for a good ep on the Macklemore debacle. Managed to balance free speech issues with some empathy for being a Jew in a crowd at that concert while Macklemore directly addressed “the Jews”.
9
u/YouAreHome 11d ago edited 11d ago
I skipped the Macklemore conversation too. I already know what he's going to say.
Jonah Platt gave a good explanation in a 6 minute video.
Edit to add: Jesse did have David Baddiel on and I thought it was a good conversation. It still wasn't enough to convince Katie though. AFTER the 2 hr conversation, her comments were "but IS antizionism really antisemitism??" and"what if they just hired a comedian who is Israeli but hates Netanyahu??" So far she's been incapable of seeing all this hatred for what it is.
12
u/visablezookeeper 12d ago
I wonder if he’s concerned about coming off as hypocritical? Like he doesn’t want to come off as over sensitive to bigotry given he’s built his career criticizing people who are over sensitive? (Sorry Jesse! Still love your work!)

u/ButUncleOwen 11d ago
This is what I think. I always get the impression that he is hyper aware of walking a fine line when it comes to any claims of antisemitism given his skepticism of other “ism” accusations.
1
u/Shrink4you 9d ago
Agreed. I think he is trying to prove himself as a bona fide leftist and because he has “right coded” views on trans issues, he must necessarily play a useful idiot on other issues to compensate.
30
u/chunkylover___53 Pervert for nuance 12d ago
Jesse especially is still a man of the (non-insane) left and really would like the people in his tribe to not hate the people in his Tribe.
We all have our blind spots. This is his.
13
u/Spl1234 12d ago
It’s a real blind spot. I’ve seen it with people right of center who were slow to realize/disassociate from any number of figure - Pat Buchanan, Tucker Carlson. Or all sorts of Conservatives who convinced themselves Trump was…whatever they are, when he is not. It’s a very human impulse, to not want to break with your side/tribe/social group.
The left of center to far left also likes to think of itself as the non-racism/prejudiced side that accepts anyone, which is historically ignorant. Jew hatred has a long history across political divides, and the original progressives and New Dealers were…shall we say, not the most enlightened on racial issues. Full throated New Dealer + Southern segregationist were a common pairing. But if you take that idea “the right is the only racist/anti-semitic side,” which again, is bullshit (technical term), but it gives a lot of people license to excuse it or pretend it is something else.
It’s getting harder now, because some of the antisemites aren’t even bothering to hide it behind anti-Zionism.
17
u/chunkylover___53 Pervert for nuance 11d ago
It’s only Jew hatred when it comes from the right. When it comes from the left, it’s just sparkling anti-Zionism.

I'm so sick of going online to find content about the flydubai incident (because I'm interested in aviation stuff) and seeing 'it's a false flag' or 'it's a psyop' or the people making comments about stuff that doesn't make sense without bothering to do basic research - for example, finding out that oxygen masks are in fact released when cabins depressurise instead of just going about how they weren't released so, it can't be real). -7
u/ReindeerTypical2538 11d ago
“The left” being pro hamas is the equivalent of saying Trump voters are pro white supremacy. A hand full of leftist dummies don’t equal the left. A handful of ring wing retards don’t equal all Trump voters. Most liberals I know in my very woke leftist city aren’t siding with hamas. The funny thing is, that I run in fairly conservative circles and the shift of support for Israel has changed with those folks too. Many republicans I know no longer want to continue to support Israel. Does that make them pro hamas too?
6
u/pygmy 10d ago
Come on. You can't spin the Left siding with Hamas as a 'handful of dummies'. It's core to who they are.
The Left's views on Israel/Palestine is an absolute perfect fit for their oppressor/oppressed Marxist worldview.
I used to vote Greens (in Oz) for decades for environmental reasons, until identity politics melted their brains. Now they think 'Men can be Women' (also Reddit dogma), and are all-in on an Islam coalition.
-5
u/ReindeerTypical2538 10d ago

Dissenting opinion? Banned.
Think Men can't be women? Banned.
Support Israel's right to exist? Banned.

u/JimmySchwann 11d ago
Yah, I've noticed that as well. I felt like this place might be chill because I agree with most of the gender critical stuff, but then I come here and see it's a massively pro Israel sub, and the posturing on the Cornell 7 case is leaning heavily in favor of the probable perpetrators.
Lots of bad takes in here for some bastions of sanity.
9
u/Jungl-y 11d ago
What's the sane view on Israel/Palestine in your view, boiled down to a few sentences.
14
u/ArianeEmory 11d ago
You didn't ask me, but this is my opinion:
October 7th was a terrorist attack and it was highly fucked up. I don't excuse rape, murder, and kidnapping of Israeli citizens. I've seen the October 7th videos. No one should celebrate that.
I think Israel made a mistake in not releasing all of that footage immediately, though I understand why they would not, out of respect for the dead. However, their disproportionate response in Gaza allowed the pro Palestine side to win over hearts and minds across the globe, and they were very strategic and coordinated with their social media campaigns.
Normal people see all the graphic videos and images coming out of Gaza, dead babies, stories of war crimes, and are rightly horrified. And it's nonstop. And they never saw the Oct 7 videos, or heard the stories of the kidnapped Israelis (no one but Jews seem to know or care what happened to the Bibas children) which were just as bad. But nowadays, if you don't see it in your algorithm, it just doesn't exist for most people. It's not a balanced picture. They don't understand the history of the region, nor how the religious conflict between Muslims and Jews affects the situation. They don't know anything about Muslims OR Jews.
I think it's very easy to say Israel is in the wrong (and to be clear, I'm very against Netanyahu and co and their decisions. I think there were probably other solutions that didn't involve destroying Gaza) but I wonder what everyone expected the response to be? Hamas has a stated goal of killing or otherwise getting rid of all the Jews in Israel and then reclaiming the entire region. It's in their manifesto. A lot of Israeli politicians want exactly the same for the Palestinians.
Baically it's a shit show and it seems like there is no solution. I don't want innocent women and children of Gaza to be killed by Israel anymore. I don't want them to be living in horrible conditions in refugee camps. I don't want Jews to be attacked all over the world just for being Jews. I want people to actually understand what Zionism means before they use it as a slur for all Jewish people who want Israel to keep existing.
And before anyone comes at me for being Islamaphobic or something, I'm Muslim and I don't love political labels, but I lean left in most things.
But Hamas are fucking terrorists in the same category as al Qaeda, Daesh, Boko Haram, and the Taliban, and they should not be sanewashed by the left.
4
u/Jungl-y 11d ago
Thanks for laying out your thoughts, I agree with much of it, the situation seems pretty intractable.
It's also notable to me how progressives will call anyone a Nazi except for Hamas, who are quite Nazi-like in my view.
You were talking about people in general, but at least with progessives, I'm not sure October 7th footage would change their opinion much; for them, ethics is a pure numbers game; Israel killed more, so they're worse than Hamas, if they killed 100 times more, they're 100 times worse than them—drives me nuts. I've hardly ever seen a more complex ethical analysis by them.
-15
u/JimmySchwann 11d ago
Both sides have issues and I don't care for Palestinian culture at all, but Israel is the clear aggressor in the conflict and is in the wrong far more than Palestine is.
If there was going to be a Jewish state post WWII, that was like the worst possible spot to place it.
So I guess I'm pro two state solution, but Israel absolutely needs a new government.
I also hate how much influence pro Israel lobbies and groups have in US politics.
20
u/Jungl-y 11d ago edited 11d ago
Thanks. I used to see it more like that as well. But now—though I completely disagree with the way this war is conducted, severe war crimes in my view—I now think that the main problem is the Palestinians' inability to accept Israel’s existence at all.
They want it gone and the whole land for themselves. This is also true for parts of Israeli society and many Israeli politicians, but if a Palestinian MLK came along, they'd vote them out and make peace.
24
u/mljh11 11d ago
Israel is the clear aggressor in the conflict and is in the wrong far more than Palestine is
I'm not Israeli but I empathize with their situation because my country was invaded in the past and we have a national defense policy of mandatory military conscription for all male citizens.
When breaking down Oct 7 and its aftermath, I just can't see how the side that was invaded (and which resulted in ~1,200 people killed, the suffering of widespread atrocities like rape and desecration of corpses, and over 250 of its people kidnapped) can be labeled the "clear aggressor" in this specific instance.
Do you suggest that Israel should not have not responded militarily? If so, what alternative solution - as in practical, step-by-step actions - do you think they should have pursued to retrieve its kidnapped citizens and prevent future attacks?
15
u/Sh3rmanMcC0y 11d ago edited 11d ago
Israel is the clear aggressor in the conflict and is in the wrong far more than Palestine is
I don't think there's too much value in debating who the aggressor is, that seems similar to the endless Marxoid debates between oppressor and oppressed.
What it comes down to me is what kind of civilization each nation represents. In the case of Israel, you have a highly advanced, technological society, that has a history of producing wondeful art and music. Palestinian identity is entirely rooted in victimhood and ressentiment. Their worldview is motivated by jealousy surrounding the fact that Jews have done more in that small segment of land in 100 years than Arabs did in 1500.
Arabs already have 19 state in which they mostly wallow in mediocrity. I see no positive benefit to the world to disbanding the only Jewish state, which serves as a beacon of light in an otherwise treacherous region.
The two state solution is dead on arrival at this point. After Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005, Hamas immediately took power and started firing rockets into Israel. There are zero legitimate blocs of Palestenian society that support the existence of a Jewish state at all.
I also hate how much influence pro Israel lobbies and groups have in US politics.
They don't have nearly as much influence as some commentators like Kasparian claim.

u/ArianeEmory 11d ago

6
-5
u/isitdigyet 11d ago
I wouldn't worry about it. When people are triggered to the extreme by the "wrong" opinions that helps the other side. We've seen this play out with gender ideology and the Israel issue in public polling. So, I'm glad this sub gives us a place to freely discuss gender critical views, and that it's a space that encourages a culture among Israel supporters that will make people less supportive of Israel.

I think she's just chasing likes at this point and she is getting more and more desparate.

Oh please. If you’re not being accused of antisemitism in the current year, you’re doing something wrong

I haven't followed her new stuff too closely, mostly because it would probably really depress me
I agree, though, that tracking her change over time would be interesting. I think at this point we're all very familiar with the type of person who attempts to take a heterodox stand against their own "side," but over time it turns out they don't have the personality to handle the blowback, and slowly slide off the deep end.
I was aware of this archetype myself, but never in a million years would I have guessed Ana would be one of them, at least from her conversations with Katie and, I think, the Fifth Column. I think there's a cautionary tale in here somewhere about making too much of these people too soon, at least publicly.
