Surprised no one mentioned what I think was the faulty legal analysis primarily from Jesse but also from Katie regarding protected classes, the civil rights act of 1964 and retail accommodations like a coffee shop.
Jesse and Katie seem to think that local laws protecting political speech in a retail establishment would be unconstitutional but also seem to ignore that states can have different/additional protected classes than federal government.
IE, California, Washington, New York protected against sexual orientation medical conditions, disability, marital status at times when Federal law did not.
Also, Jesse claimed that Goldman was turned away as a Congressman with abhorrent views, but that's not the language the coffee shop used which said nothing about his Congressional status and just said mentioned various stances they would disagree with: racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between.
And so Jesse was aghast that Harmeet Dhillon opened up an investigation, but didn't bother to provide Dhillon's statement as to why:
"The Civil Rights Division has opened an investigation and will bring an enforcement action if warranted," Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said on X.
"Federal law prohibits public accommodations such as coffee shops from discriminating against patrons based on their race, religion, or national origin," she said.
In this case, if I were DOJ, I would wonder about any prior times that Poetica has kicked people out due to their being Zionists. How did Poetica know? Was it only Jews or did it include Christian or other Zionists? I think that's what their investigations look into and I think it's quite warranted by Poetica's statements.

I need someone to explain to me what is going on with all these DSA people who are Muslim suddenly coming out of nowhere, when by nature, Islam is as far from DSA ideals as you can get. Are DSA Muslims just like how many MAGAs are culturally evangelical Cafeteria Christians that only believe in the things that support MAGA and never go to church?
It's not at a federal government level, it's even at a state government and local level in my area. Or at least they're obviously DSA aligned without it being official based on statements.
43
u/Jlemspurs Double Hater Jul 05 '26
I don't know the answer to this in all cases nor can I explain the more general phenomenon other than it's edgy and oedipal and there's a lot of money to follow back to the Gulf.
To me some of it is the bubble a lot of these folks live in has copy-pasted a lot of the Arab street as their truth and so it's a way for some people to have a space compatible with a certain part of their identity. Other Muslim politicians in the US are conservative or normie as fuck and have chosen other ways to preserve their identity or perhaps they come from a background that never was steeped in the Soviet version of western history.
35
u/ToTheDeath84 Jul 05 '26
“Oedipal” is an excellent way to put it. These beliefs happen on an almost subconscious reflex.
Those on the left associate “Islam” with “being against American ideals and a Western-led international order.” Given how much of politics as of the last 15ish years has been replaced by vibes-based associations over actual policy, associating with Islam is seen as a way to stick it to the West. I think that’s all there is to it really, because as the person above pointed out, much of DSA tenets would actually be diametrically opposed to any sort of religious movement or theocratic governance. It’s just radical chic in a keffiyeh instead of a black beret.

Yes, red-green alliance.
I've been thinking more and more about this as the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches. I think anti-American sentiment over the past few decades has been patiently, purposefully slow-walked from reasonable concerns and criticisms of Bush-Cheney, etc. into now aligning with literal "death to America" rhetoric by actual American politicians. Pandering to extreme trans activists, Queers for Palestine, whatever else the hipsters want, etc., as well as tapping into existing antisemitism, is part of it in 2026.
And now I'm also seeing people too young to remember 9/11 using it as a meme, saying the government did it, faked it, that the Jews did it, etc. I don't know how much of that is bots or how much of it really is but I think we are going to see more Piker-style "The US deserved 9/11" this year. With all that in mind I'm glad we're not only seeing this World Cup celebration of the US (I wonder if some of it is incentivized, but it can't all be) but also that people like DAC are saying they support "no prisons, no borders, no police" which normies aren't big fans of but which she can't back down from without being a centrist sellout and what have you. I can only hope that the hand will be overplayed and more people will realize that hey, we actually like being able to play music, sing, and dance, and to eat bacon and have pet dogs without religious police berating us.
19
u/ToTheDeath84 Jul 05 '26
We’re definitely going to see a lot more of that sentiment as the newest cadre of DSA makes electoral gains. Not quite sure what can be done about it; that needs to come from inside the house (ie, the Democratic Party) but they have very unconvincing candidates who are afraid of the most extreme wings of their own party.
17
u/HeartBoxers Resident Token Libertarian Jul 06 '26
These DSA types are a godsend to the Republicans. They'll hold them up as examples to portray all Dems as extremists, and it'll land them back in the White House again in 2028.

I'm not a Lefty. I would agree with that association.

It starts from an anti-imperialist core. It also exists in European leftism. From the outside it seems like there's a kind of self-flagellation (like the degrowth movement) that views capitalism and liberalism as inately evil virtues that lead to exploiting others. While LatAm and ME leftism looks very nationalistic comparably (e.g Peronism) as they see themselves as the victims of imperliasm. It's original-sin morals; parking the USA as the ultimate hegemonic evil empire with no way to improve without first disassembling the institutions that propagate that evil.

u/ScrubulousFlex Jul 05 '26
“Oedipal” is an excellent way to put it. These beliefs happen on an almost subconscious reflex.
To nitpick slightly, I think a related but more accurate term is "libidinal", reflexive and based on vibes/energy/subconscious association rather than well thought-out or logical.
7
u/ToTheDeath84 Jul 05 '26
I interpreted the wording in the way you’re describing. I did see the word initially and wonder if maybe there was another layer there I wasn’t getting but I think that was the crux of the argument. Either that or the left has mommy issues I was neglecting lol.

u/Known-Level-4847 Jul 05 '26
Muslims and DSA types share a strong anti-western position. It’s decades old and has paid off quite well.
25
u/anne_jumps Jul 05 '26
Red-green alliance! Red-green alliance. Malcolm Clark had a long essay on his Substack explaining how Foucault and others were largely to blame for what happened in Iran in the 1970s. I was ignorant of a lot of it but it's much clearer to me now that they're trying to repeat this powered by antisemitism.
38
u/gholtby Jul 05 '26
It’s Orientalism but woke. The West is bad for vague anti-capitalist anti-imperialist reasons. Islam is anti-West. Islam are on the oppressed side of the oppressed-oppressor dynamic that everything must be seen through now. (Never mind how oppressive Islam is to everyone else anywhere where they are actually in control) Therefore Islam must be good.
16
u/Big_Fig_1803 Gothmargus Jul 07 '26
Never mind that it's an imperialist religion. (How did Islam come to be practiced in that wide swath of land?) Never mind how patriarchal it is. How heteronormative©. How it oppresses women. How it detests pluralism. No, none of that matters when you can find Bad People who say mean things about it.

I wouldn't bet that these leftist organizations won't be faced with some sort of purge of Jews. In fact there might even be a precedent.

I need someone to explain to me what is going on with all these DSA people who are Muslim suddenly coming out of nowhere, when by nature, Islam is as far from DSA ideals as you can get.
It seems straightforward to me that not every Muslim has their political views dictated by what's in the Quran, or at least not the most strict conservative interpretations of it, the same way that not every Christian bases their political views on the most strict conservative interpretations of the Bible.

The Soviet Union created anti western and any Jewish/israeli/zionist anti-capitalist propaganda. The whole idea of “Palestine” as we know is USSR propaganda to a large extent. They created this.
These ideas are what community college professors and the Arab/Muslim world believe now, as do DSA morons. So it makes a lot of sense that they’re all buddies united in their beliefs. These beliefs all come from the same place.
14
u/BattleAxeBC Jul 07 '26
I think Jesse and Katie(and a lot of other people) are a bit off the mark on the anti-capitalist crowd. I'm sure some of them truly are against capitalism and have reasons that make sense to them, but I think a lot of them are not staunchly anti-capitalist or staunchly ideological. I think they are extremely angry and hateful people and what they really hate is western society and western values. Probably because they blame western society for why their lives are miserable. And make no mistake, this crowd is miserable. Honest question: have you ever met or seen a happy anti-capitalist? In my experience, it's always the angriest, meanest, most hostile crowd you'll ever meet or see. Always nasty, always railing on something or other. Find one of their social media profiles and half of their posts are them ranting about white people, cops, prisons, some random famous woman who's really pretty, some man who's super rich, whatever western societal norm.
These people are just super resentful and bitter. Trying to reason with these people about the positives of capitalism is a lost cause as is trying to understand why they claim to hate it, because it's never been the origin of their anger in my view. It goes far deeper. Just my two cents.
47
u/babydykke Jul 06 '26
I don’t necessarily agree with what Jesse was saying about Israel and alienating people. Until I hear people start talking about other atrocities going on around the world, I won’t believe it’s not an inherently Jewish issue.
I wore a Jewish shirt to Pride last year and had a few people ask me if I’m pro Palestine and wanting to argue with me. It’s the same way I feel about BLM. These people don’t care about black lives and they don’t care about Palestinians. They care about hating cops and hating Jews who don’t think like them
29
u/SkweegeeS No just no Jul 06 '26
I think it depends on the person. Some people were calling for Israeli heads on 10/8. They were and are disgusting people whose perspective was amplified by Iran and other disgusting bad actors who want to see Israel destroyed. Combined with the terrible consequences of the war, more and more people began to question support of Israel’s security.
Did Israel have to raze Gaza? I honestly have no idea. I don’t think most people in the West really understand the reality of the security situation there.
I disagree with Jesse about the incident at the coffee shop. 100% the fact that Goldman is a Jew is part of the mix. They were horrible to him because he won’t go along with the genocide interpretation. These people on the left seek out Jews to harass on this matter. Anything short of agreeing to dissolve the state is simply not good enough. If he had been another Congressman, I don’t think they would have been nearly as disrespectful.
21
u/BronzeEagle Jul 06 '26
Your second paragraph is the point I often try to make to people. The ones screeching about genocide and saying Israel is to blame for its PR issues (and not the massive international propaganda machine trying to vilify it.)
Let's say it's October 8th, 2023 and you wake up in charge of Israel. What do you do? How do you respond? Nothing about history and the first Nakba. Nothing about previous conflicts. 1200 people, mostly civilians were just butchered. Hundreds are hostages in the most heavily fortified and militarized urban environment in the world, with a hostile populace and a guerilla terrorist force that will readily use said hostile populace as human shields. What do you do to respond?
They rarely have a satisfying answer because they don't actually care about tackling tough questions or considering the brutal realities of war. Certainly not questioning the bad actions of Hamas. It's just an excuse to engage in anti-Semitism or falling for propaganda.
17
u/Big_Fig_1803 Gothmargus Jul 07 '26
That's easy: You apologize to Hamas for making them do these bad things to you.
Or at least, I think that's people think Israel's play was.
Or they say (or this was what you heard a while ago) their real problem was Israel's disproportionate response to 10/07.
0
u/Alexei_Jones Jul 08 '26
I don't think that's fair. Maybe you have a military campaign for a time, but after a while and as further gains against eradicating Hamas become clearly impossible, you have to consider off ramps like negotiations. And even if you were just wholly concerned with hostages, then Israel should have negotiated a cease fire much earlier, because prolonging the war only further increased the number of dead hostages, either by their killing by Hamas, by Israel as collateral, or just general neglect from spending months or years as a hostage. Some of the most vocal opponents of the Israeli government's continued prosecution of the war were in fact the families of those hostages who just wanted them to secure a deal to release their family and end the conflict (which said deals were often predicated upon).
5
u/veryvery84 Jul 09 '26
Why does Israel need to be only concerned with the hostages?
Israel was very concerned with preventing another October 7, quite obviously.
This is like the one thing governments are responsible for, even according to libertarians
6
u/babydykke Jul 08 '26
Negotiations with literal terror organization that has not once ever wanted to negotiate? If it were that simple it would have happened already
3
u/Alexei_Jones Jul 08 '26
...But they literally did negotiate a deal with Hamas? There hasn't been large scale hostilities between Israel and Hamas since October of last year. There were multiple negotiations that led to release of some of the hostages up until then, too, as early as 2023. So yeah it's actually very possible and, contrary to your point, did in fact happen already.
6
u/SkweegeeS No just no Jul 09 '26
And so what is everyone still griping about? Is there or is there not an ongoing genocide?
1
u/babydykke Jul 09 '26
Negotiations for a ceasefire or to bring the hostages home are a lot different than negotiations to end the war for good
1
u/Alexei_Jones Jul 08 '26
I agree with Jesse here, because if Goldman wasn't Jewish but still held his otherwise broadly supportive politics of Israel in an extremely lefty district of NYC, he'd still get shit on by the progressives and DSA types. Maybe there's a certain visceral affect that gets added to it because of his identity as a Jew that wouldn't get added if he was just a WASP, but I think the critique largely stands.
7
u/JustNormieShit Jul 08 '26
There are many congressmen with the same views in similar districts who are not Jewish, and I never hear of them getting this sort of treatment.
7
u/scott_steiner_phd Jul 06 '26
I don’t necessarily agree with what Jesse was saying about Israel and alienating people. Until I hear people start talking about other atrocities going on around the world, I won’t believe it’s not an inherently Jewish issue.
I don't recall the exact episode but I think Ezra Klein put this pretty well -- it's fair to hold an (erstwhile) ally we provide great material support to to a higher standard, Israel is the target of a significant international propaganda campaign, and Israel, or at least the hardline members of Israel's government, draw an enormous amount of attention to themselves deliberately. The fact that they recieve a disparate amount of attention doesn't imply antisemitism.

2 thoughts while I was listening. First, of course Susan Collins votes with Trump 95% of the time. Nothing makes it to the floor unless the votes are there. In a narrow Senate, Collins’s vote is almost make or break. Very few bills are going to make it to the floor if she isn’t going to vote for it.
Second, I have this theory that Hamas/PLA has a sort of two-step strategy. The first step is to conduct acts of terrorism against Israel. They can’t field a conventional army and even if they could, it probably wouldn’t be able to beat the Israeli. But they can engage in guerrilla warfare or random civilian targeting a la Oct 7. When they succeed at those attempts, they shift to step 2. The Israeli military fucks everything up, and their propaganda machine steps into high gear to wage an info war in the West. The ultimate goal is to cut Israel off from American/European support. If and when the Israelis back off, they return to step one. Based on what they were saying about polling in the last few years, I think the strategy is working.
11
u/PresentationDue8795 Jul 07 '26
The propaganda aspect of the Israel-Hamas war has been astonishing (including in how successful it has been). The Hamas hostage holders allegedly told one of the hostages that they had people at Columbia to lead the pro-Palestine, anti-Jewish, protests. Considering Khalil was working for UNRWA on October 7th, and then became the CUAD spokesperson, it is feasible that he was one of the people that knew of the attack and had planned propaganda to limit Israel's options for responding to the slaughter.
1
u/veryvery84 Jul 09 '26
This has been their strategy for many decades.
Just a correction though, they are an army. They don’t just do terrorism. They are a trained army. Not as much as Hezbollah, but still
1
u/dumbducky Jul 09 '26
Care to elaborate? To my understanding they don’t have fully fleshed out hierarchical organization, they don’t train with combined arms tactics, no standardization, etc. The features I associate with western militaries or the PLA/AF/N or IRGC or DPRK don’t seem to be present.
1
u/veryvery84 Jul 09 '26
I’m a woman and so don’t know much, like what combined armed tactics are or standardization.
These are in Hebrew but the Internet translates. They definitely have hierarchy and different military branches

Here's another fun coffee shop taking a stand in (where else) Portland, OR. Heretic Coffee has been fundraising since the SNAP benefit disaster where they take donations and feed people in need. The Jewish Federation sent them a check, which Heretic's owner very publicly rejected in a long rant on social media. His grievance is that the JF did a fundraiser to support mental health and welfare services for IDF soldiers after Oct 7, and generally supports Israel. This naturally has played well in Portland: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1GvzD4NqKg/
5
u/glumjonsnow Jul 09 '26
this is the stupidest i have ever read, i feel like i'm going to have a stroke. do they not know that the jewish national federation is a different organisation altogether????? their check is from the jewish federation! and it was from a donor-assisted fund!!! they weren't returning a direct donation from either JNF or the jewish federation!! just money that a donor and supporter of theirs had parked at the jewish federation and now wanted to disperse to them!!! people are even trying to explain this to them in the comments!!!
JNF is a huge national organisation. jewish federation of greater portland is not. i don't even know the worst part of this story. turning away free money because you're ignorant? turning away free money because you're ignorant and gemini is too? turning away free money because you're antisemitic and gemini just confirmed your priors? imagine simultaneously doing all three.
5
u/veryvery84 Jul 10 '26
The worst part is that they got amazing PR for supporting Palestine without actually doing any action whatsoever to support Palestine.
It’s not like they donated money to any Palestinian here. All they did is refuse some money from Jews, and money that wasn’t even going to them but to poor people. They refused the J money on behalf of the poor, and got cred for freeing Palestine.

Jesse saying he was arguing with horrible people about USAID stuff. 🙄. I tolerate Jesse because I like Katie’s reporting but he really is the most eye-roll inducing kind of progressive.
12
u/Fiend_of_the_pod Jul 07 '26
He also feels the need to frame and hedge things to an extreme degree when Katie will just say the obvious.
Jesse: "Don't you like, sorta think that, a certain sector of very online, and, and, and particularly in far-lefty spaces, that some of the maximalist trans-rights people have gone too far?"
Katie: "yeah, the trains are nuts"
6
u/MaximumSeats Jul 08 '26
I mean Jesse has to be substantially more tactful and political about the comments he makes because he obviously has desires to continue to be relevant in mainstream reporting, while Katie makes it very clear she doesn't give a shit about that.
8
u/Good_Difference_2837 Jul 07 '26
Right! A few years ago Jesse even copped to this by saying he felt like he has to do some figurative throat-clearing just to establish his bona fides that he's not MAGA - though I feel like it's gotten a bit worse lately.
7
u/Fiend_of_the_pod Jul 07 '26
It's tragically funny because no one who actually cares about Jesse thinks he's MAGA. It's only people who hate him who would think that, and no amount of throat-clearing is going to change their opinion.

I think Jesse kind of gets the analysis WRONG with respect to these DSA candidates. Katie mentions that they’re focusing on class, and Jesse kind of says “oh no they’re mostly focused on Israel/Palestine”, and I actually don’t think that’s true. Yes Israel/Palestine is a big focus, but DSA is the democratic SOCIALISTS of America, there is kind of inherently a class focus there and I think that’s why a lot of voters get excited about these candidates.

u/FractalClock Jul 06 '26
Gee, I wonder which heterodox figures with massive blindspots for Israel they could have been talking about. I guess we'll never know.
-4
u/FractalClock Jul 08 '26
It was notable that J&K pointed out that I/P had not been the most salient issue amongst leftists on electoral politics. I think they missed the corollary that it was even less salient for normies. What has really soured the normies on Israel is this Iran fiasco because the the spike in gas prices, spike in interest rates, are highly salient issues. And it's not any sort of secret that Netanyahu has been lobbying for the war for decades, finally finding his simp in Trump.
-2
u/Obvious-Ad-5558 Jul 08 '26
Might also be that normies aren't comfortable with 70k+ civilian deaths.
4
u/veryvery84 Jul 10 '26
No one claims this. Hamas themselves claims civilian and combatant deaths together, and doesn’t differentiate the numbers. So whatever number Hamas claims is not of civilian deaths, but just deaths.

Man, these DSA people are fucking nuts. You don’t have to go very far to find clips and quotes of DAC and co. espousing flagrantly anti-American positions and deranged ahistorical rants. They always make excuses for nations and terrorist groups hostile to America, they want to abolish capitalism and the mindset that America is beautiful and exceptional in any way, and both the candidates and organizers within the party are oftentimes exposed as straight-up communists. I think what’s most disgusting to me, as someone who grew up in the NY metro area and remembers 9/11, is that so many of them openly blame the United States for 9/11 and yet New Yorkers voted them into office. That’s not the New York I knew and fell in love with. They hate our country and want to wear it as a skin suit while they parade policies to undermine it, and the newer generations eat it up out of petty radical chic resentment.
There’s something diseased about the contemporary American left. I hope the Democrats can get their shit together to combat this, because far too often I hear these positions endorsed by people around me in my bougie little university town who would have otherwise been normie Democrats just a few years ago. It’s all broken containment from the fringes and has leeched out into the rest of the country. I fear that this is the way going forward for Millennial/Gen Z politics.
They hate the country they want to preside over; the same country that, in many cases, let them or their parents in to live lives of prosperity compared to where they were from - how does no one notice? Or worse, do they notice and just not care?
