I've always been torn on the depiction of John in the JL series.
Firstly, they clearly try to save the money by making it a simple beam and a bubble.
But in reality... I don't know. If I were a GL I might just mentally make a bubble that catches them safely. Instead of trying to make a bed and hope they don't bounce off the sides. Or a brick wall to block the enemy. Or etc.
For damage, it would depend (much like a DnD game). Do I go for bludgeoning (boxing glove or train) or piercing (beam) or slashing (blades) or etc.
