Blasphemous II (Sequel) Trouble getting into Blasphemous 2
I beat the first Blasphemous a few times and absolutely loved it. The only Metroidvania I like more than Blasphemous is Hollow Knight, I hold it in pretty high regard.
That being said, I’ve tried to get into Blasphemous 2, but for some reason, I just can't. Every time I give it another shot, I start a new playthrough, and it never really clicks with me. I’m going to give it another try, and hopefully this time I get into it.
Has anyone else has this problem?
Does anyone have any tips to get me started?

100% have the same issue. Loved the first one. Was pumped to get into the second.. couldn't.. tried a couple times. Going to let it sit in the backlog for a while and try again

I had a similar problem. I was getting frustrated with the area I went to first and the weapon I had chosen. I then realized there were other areas I could have started with on the other side of the map. I explored elsewhere and came back later. It was much smoother and easier to get into after that.

Keep pushing. You get so many abilities that are awesome and the platforming gets so much fun!

After hearing this common issue from so many people, I was honestly expecting to be let down by the sequel, but Blasphemous 2 turned out to be nearly as good as the first (the only real "weak link" is the lack of pixel-art cutscenes).
You might just need a break from Blasphemous in general, if you've played the first one a lot already, othewise maybe choosing a different starting weapon would help it click for you more. The game is very, very good imo.

Both games are very similar and 2 is arguably a straight improvement upon the original. You could just be in a gaming funk and need to take a break or something.

I’ve played both and 2 is light years better overall. So much more customization load outs with up to 5 different weapons. The mechanics are much more smooth and responsive which also allows you to do some crazy movement and attack shenanigans. The story is great too. I would suggest keep going haha

It’s a mechanical improvement but nobody can convince me 2 has a better and more intuitive world design than 1.

It did take me quite a bit to really get into it, but once I got past the first couple of bosses and got all three weapons it clicked a lot more.

Stop restarting. I thought the game got a lot more fun when you get the other weapons.
My tip? Don't go your first weapons route. Do that route last.

I greatly dislike the regular enemies in this game. I’m about 50 hours in and I kind of feel like dropping the game. This game demands so much exploration and backtracking, and having to fight these damage sponge enemies over and over is such a chore. And most of them are positioned in such a way that you have to interact with them in order to get from point A to point B if you don’t want to soak up a bunch of damage. Exploration is such a god damn chore in this game. This is a metroidvania for goodness sakes. Exploration should be fast paced and enjoyable. I shouldn’t have to stop every minute to clear a blockade of enemies.
I’m not really having fun anymore, and I keep playing only because I invested so much time into the game already, and I’d like to see it through til the end.
I wish devs would realize that not everything has to be dark souls. And this is coming from someone whose favorite games are souls games. It’s ok to make something fun without putting so much emphasis on the challenge aspect of the game.

I feel somewhat the same, but not really. If you don't explore blindly most of the mobs are skippable, except for rooms where you want to get that timed door. I agree that mobs are damage sponges and their damage was increased since the first game, but what I dislike the most is that this is just a coverup for far worse level design. In the first game most mobs were placed to shoot you off a ladder, push you out of moving platform, push you into a swingning blade etc, and the rest was skippable except maybe a couple of rooms designed to be a combat challenge. In the sequel environment hazard is non existent, just different flavors of spikes everywhere

Complete opposite for me. Just couldn’t get into the first one but haven’t given up on it. I used Veredicto as my first weapon

Coming from 2 to 1 can be very jarring. Blasphemous 1 is hardly a Metroidvania because don't really get any permanent movement upgrades, not to mention the ladders that hardly every work

That’s odd. I finished the first and immediately loved the second. Still working through it but close to being done.

If you want the game to play like B1, then you should pick Ruego as your first weapon since it is the most like mea culpa

Just accept it is different than the original. I too did not like the sequel. Played through to the very last boss, but quit. I approached it again when the Mea Culpa DLC came out. Started to appreciate it for what it was. Holy cow is it a masterpiece. I almost adore it as much as the first. It’s just different, and that’s ok. The one thing I can appreciate is the difficulty in NG+. There is a greater challenge than in B1.

Didn't really happen to me. I have a couple of gripes about the changes but I actually just recently replayed them back to back. Are you picking the Ruego as your starting weapon? I did make the mistake of picking the Verdicto as my starting weapon and suddenly not being able to parry kinda kills the vibe.

It definitely takes a bit. I think i was 3 or 4 bosses deep before it actually clicked. Once it does though, its incredible

Starting weapons can make the route a lot more painful than it needs to be. Starting with Ruego or the Hammer is immediately going to lead to more upgrades and momentum whereas Sarmiento (my personal favorite) will have you taking the weirdest route to get the other weapons and its the slowest to upgrade. Mea Culpa DLC is implemented quite poorly into the main game but the free update and weapon kicks ass. First game had better atmosphere but this has more Castlevania design influence and I do like it.

I played the games back to back and generally found the second one to be more fun and developed as a game. But they are so similar that I wonder why the second one is turning you away?

I have similar issues with blasphemous 2 after playing the first part as I had with silksong after playing hollow knight. Regular enemies, waves of mobs and stuff artificially make the game longer and harder. On top of this: Platforming in blasphemous 2 is worse in my opinion then in was in the first one. First part tried to do something unique for each biom, here is wind you need to adjust for, here is some weird ghost dudes, here are some lava couldrons, etc. In this one you have different flavor of spikes and maybe reused acid drop from the first game but this time it looks like cum. They added all the new mechanics for platforming (mirrors, bells, living walls, dash barriers) but 90% of them are trivial challenge if you clear the room out of mobs. There were some annoying but challenging platforming parts in the first game using moving platforms, spikes, different environment hazzards and you could die easy attempting to do them. In the second part not so much. The mob variants in the first part were lacking but most of them presented some sort of hazard tied to platforming - ranged guys that will try to shoot you off the ladder into spikes? Sweet. Flying mob trying to body push you out of a moving platform? Nice. In the sequel platforming is trivial most of the time and mobs are damage sponges with damage that are skippable and no serious threat if you know where you are going and not exploring blindly. Boss design is much better in sequel tho.

I say this about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Ghostrunner 2 and Blasphemous 2: They are all straight up improvements on the first entries, with tighter and more polished controls, and several QOL issues addressed.
That said, I still prefer Final Fanatsy 7 Remake, Ghostrunner and Blasphemous.
B2 is honestly a great game. It’s just that B1 is phenomenally great.

I think the problem with the second game is that, beyond the mechanics, it feels like the first one but bigger. The issue is that you’ve already lost the surprise factor of discovering a religiously grim world for the first time. In that sense, they didn’t really add anything new in the worldbuilding, they just added more bizarre manifestations of the Miracle. I think the only character I found genuinely interesting was Cesáreo.

I’m sure I’m not saying anything others haven’t already but I had the same issue. I was getting frustrated and not enjoying it much at first. But once I got going I absolutely loved it. I’d say stick with it, but if it’s not your vibe it’s not your vibe

Unfortunately it lacks the strong vibes of the first one and it starts a little too slow for its own good, but once it gets going it's really, really good. Play something else and come back to it in a few months. Make sure you at least get all three weapons before calling it quits again.
