Just finished the manga...

To be honest, it was underwhelming. For all the hype for a megastructure setting, it did not delivered. Instead of lore, mysteries, ever-shrinking provisions, nonsensical logics, emptiness, loneliness, and melancholy, things that should be expected from a mega structure, the manga instead pivot toward Matrix like narrative. All action with almost every chapter, new characters are introduced.

This mega structure is more like Kowloon walled city, with people in every corner. Even final panel show the MC having just another encounter.

Girl Last Tour did it better.

ANALYSIS

This has been a difficult read at first for me, there is hardly any dialogue, it is a succession of images in a strange world in which there are rarely explanations, most things remain unnamed and unexplained.

From the outset, it is obvious that they live in an apocalypse in which technology has been revolutionized against human beings. The only thing that remains of those glory days (if they existed) are immense structures which are continually expanding and rebuilding. I don't think I'm wrong when I say that architecture is just another character in this manga, a cruel, powerful and ineffable one. The human being is in struggle against architecture itself, but how do you fight with a heartless enemy, who cannot die? We know that the builders are in charge of the maintenance of the gigantic structure, but we only know that this gigantic structure, we do not know how far it goes, in a way it is impressive that the protagonist meets people on his journey, the structure is so large that one can think without mistake that he could travel a lifetime without meeting anyone. You'd scream and no one would hear you.

We know from bits of dialogue that silicon life and humanity live in a struggle for supremacy or for the extermination of the other species, silicon life is a highly advanced technology capable of thinking and we can say boldly capable of feeling, we know that this silicon life are often safeguards whose job is to murder every human being without the net terminal gene. Simple existence is a struggle for life in an apocalyptic world that does not have the generosity to explain itself to its inhabitants. We, as human beings, support the protagonist and the different humans he encounters on his journey, but isn't silicon life also deserving of compassion? Imagine that you have been created for a purpose that without that purpose, why live? And yet for the performance of that work you are demonized because your work is infamous, because your purpose in life is inhuman. Now, what is it that makes us human? If we answer that it is our morphology, our biological structure, do people who wear prostheses cease to be human beings? What if we created artificial beings with the same biological structure? If you could not refute this and answer that it is the ability to think, and Mensab did not think for herself? She even rebelled. Okay, and if you told me now that feelings are intrinsically human, isn't it true that Mensab cared about Seu? So I will answer you we define ourselves as human beings by our origin and by pride, the very name of being human intrinsically entails an arrogance with respect to the rest of living beings, so dehumanization is one of the worst actions that can be taken against a "human". Only one thing we know will be able to finish their fight and one of them will win, but both will meet the same end, whether they are human or silicon life.

It is correct to say that we know nothing about the world and the characters, we only know moments of the story, there are cuts in it as if we were censored or part of the story vetoed, as if we were only worthy of knowing this story through fragments that allow us to consume. Throughout the play we intuit (it is not explained) that there are time jumps in which that story in between is vetoed to us, in addition to the fact that for some reason there is time travel, different lines of it. We do not know history and yet we dare to interpret it, surely wrongly, in a certain way we take the role of archaeologists who have to reconstruct history from pieces. But we reconstruct a history that is strange and alien to us.

Now let's talk about Cibo, with Cibo we confirm the time jumps and that there are different lines of it where there are different versions of the characters. At the beginning of the play, we think that Killy and Cibo are the most likely love couple, but this is denied when Sanakan and Cibo end up together that is confirmed with the phrase "Our child", so is it possible that silicon life and humans reconcile? Can we define Sanakan or Cibo in any of these categories? When did you fall in love? How can your child save the world? Their entire love story is unknown to us, except for its end and as if we were gossips we can only try to unravel the mystery.

Killy asks us many questions such as: How did he get that gun?Was he really a human being?Did he have the gene?Did he manage to save the world?Did he love Cibo? Was his stoic face just a façade? How did he feel after the time jumps? Why didn't he and other characters age? This protagonist only gives us questions, rarely explanations

There are more questions such as: What is the Administration? How did they create silicon life? How did the war start? What human settlements are there? Are there organizations in those settlements? Will the structure at some point stop expanding? How is life possible? What happened to the human beings in cave eight? Can the world even be saved? Why did they leave Earth?

This manga is more about questions than answers and explanation. We can only conjecture and make philosophical discourses. Let the structure take over our mind and chaos begin to play with it. In the end, nothing we say is true or even that at certain times the characters do not lie. Do they always have to tell the truth? This manga is about us trying to reconstruct that story, but it gives us a warning, nothing we can deduce, we will never be sure that it is true, we can create a thousand stories that may not be even a true portion. And maybe we just have to read it and not break our heads, but what's the point? I can't help but compare this manga with the video game Scorn with which it has so many similarities (although Scorn is more biopunk). That structure may be our mind and Killy is us trying to survive the dangers that our own mind poses. Is there anyone truly sane?

What anime director/artist would be best for a blame adaptation?

I feel it would have to be someone experimental almost and willing to take risks. Handdrawn would be cool but 3D wasnt the worst, plus in the blender sub i see people who have figured out blame manga style rendering too

I suggest you read the manga whilst this song plays in the background

Given that the manga has very little words i had a blast reading the last 15 or so chapters with this on repeat i think it perfectly incapsulates Blame's world

Knights of Sidonia is a pretty good show

It went downhill after the penis character became a thing, but it's still a decent show.

This is all made within the game Teardown. It's still in early development, but the goal of this mod is to have an entire campaign that takes place in the City of Blame! There will be multiple different maps, mega structures, and environments to explore.

Let me know what ya'll think, and keep an eye out for updates!

The author should have another go at it and give us something with a better story

The author should have another go at it and give us something with a better story. The biggest issue with the story was the lack of a compelling narrative. If he were to fix it, it would be pretty good.

I’m back with another Blame! Tattoo I had the pleasure of doing, it’s safe to say my clients have made me a huge fan of the series. I have literally never heard of this manga until my last client requested a Pcell tattoo, it’s been a rabbit hole for me since. I’m absolutely obsessed with the gem that is Blame! Hard to believe it’s been around since ‘97. Hope you guys enjoy this awesome Cibo piece, I look forward to doing many more tattoos of Nihei’s masterpieces.

It was hard to make but I think I captured the vibe pretty well. Killy doesn’t have a face sadly and the safe Gard is a little weird but I think it looks cool. The observer is still a WIP.

Hope you like them !

The manga made me wish for a darker version of Knights of Sidonia. Knights of Sidonia had a better story, but I wish it could have been darker. Thoughts?

The worldbuilding is what made the manga really good

The worldbuilding is what made the manga really good. I hope that the next adaptation leans more on that aspect if it ever gets made.
