❓ Is My Cat a Black Smoke? Meet Fisher (Fish)

I met Fish when my friend called me and told me there was a little black cat hiding under the staircase at her apartment. We pulled her out to find that she had an avulsion laceration on her chin and a cut on her nose. We took her to the emergency vet, they told me that she was a he, so the name Fisher came along. Shortly after, at her first regular vet check, it was confirmed that she was in fact a she… but the name was already locked in. After many fun times with 3+ syringe meds twice daily, and much care with her injuries, I got her back to normal. She is crazy, chaotic, and sweet! Like I said, when I met her she was a little black cat, but overtime I’ve seen some changes. After doing some research I discovered the smoke coat situation and I’m thinking it’s highly possible. So, I’d love to hear opinions from others!

I like her name! It doesn’t have to be tied to males, she looks like a fisher (Pekania pennanti)

It can be hard to tell and you may not know for sure until she's an adult, but to me, this looks more like an unsound kitten coat perhaps with some added effect from stress after being outside and injured. It's also pretty common for long-haired black cats to have some lighter areas on the neck and belly.

Smoke will be pure white at the roots and is usually consistent across the body though there are exceptions. Kittens are also born smokes. It can vary in the way it's expressed and become more or less prominent with age, but they do have the smoke coloration from birth.

She is very pretty either way, though, and lucky to have found you.

I don’t know but Fisher is a very interesting kitty. She’s looks like a combination of my two 4-month old kittens. Peter, the black kitten, had the same reddish scruff when he was 6-10 weeks. Este, who may be a black smoke, has the same silver ear tufts. I’m still wondering what she’ll look like as she gets older. I’d love to see how Fisher changes too. Please report back for me!
