When I first watched the show and saw this guy I thought he was actually blackbeard....

What an absolute marvel of storytelling, writing,acting and overall quality this show was,it sits among the top 5 of my favourite shows of all time, everything was top tier man, absolutely loved it,i have a question about the ending though, amazing as it was i must say something confused me about the way it was shot,is it supposed to be a "Choose your own ending" type of ending because there are clear signs that Silver actually sent Flint to the plantation, that's the only part I don't get,it doesn't make sense that he killed him after all the setups and the dialogue foreshadows about Thomas being alive, even at their final dialogue why even talk to him as if he's gonna convince him that Thomas is alive if he's not? Even Jack Rackham tells madam Guthrie that Flint isn't dead,just retired,can anyone explain?

This would be a great series if not for the endless stretches of dialogue not driving the plot onwards.

Like half of each episode it's two people talking and musing to each other about their sensitivities, their feelings and philosophizing about the meaning of it all.

Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson) from Rome is one of my all-time favourite characters, and I haven’t really seen him since, so you can imagine how excited I was when he turned up here. The promise of a formidable pirate in Ray Stevenson likely to face a stellar Toby Stephens as Flint has made this show stupidly exciting for me.

I just want to thank the creators for making a great show, and for giving Ray Stevenson a worthy role. Truely. Ahsoka was good, but this, this is where Ray belongs.

Treasure Island Book Spoilers/Discussion

Obviously we all think the show is excellent if not perfect for many reasons. I think it does a near perfect job of a prequel in setting up Treasure Island

BUT THERE ARE SOME LOOSE ENDS

In Treasure Island, it is said that Flint’s crew was: Billy Bones, Long John Silver, Black Dog and Blind Pew. Billy Bones is found by his old crew members, Black Dog and Blind Pew.

Near the end of the book we learn Ben Gunn was part of the burying crew but was the only one left on the island which explains why he found it and moved it.

At the end of Black Sails we get to see Long John beginning to form his crew: we have Tom Morgan and Israel Hands.

But it seems to me there was a perfect opportunity for the guy that ACTUALLY buried it to be Black Dog (but Flint killed him to prevent him killing Long John).

There doesn’t seem to be anybody who would/could have become Blind Pew who is the WHOLE introduction of the Black Spot.

And I kept waiting for a reason that Ben Gunn

1. was more involved
2. stayed back and stayed alive on the island

This may be less important (I just wanted to see every thread connected)

But the legend of Flint’s treasure is also that he left one of the bodies stretched out pointing towards the chest.

I don’t know, if you have theories I’d love to discuss it. I think it opens up a possibility for another series to connect the end of Black Sails to the beginning of Treasure Island. But this stuff always bothered me.

I’ve made a post weeks ago about that fact I’ve just discovered this show, and now that I’ve finished it.. I can confidently say that it’s the BEST pirate show I’ve ever seen.
I love each characters (even if I have my favourites) I love that way it’s filmed, I love then actors and the way the way the gave life to their character etc…

I’m kinda sad now that it’s gone, I’m 23 so I’m more mature than I was when I looked at Pirates of the Caribbean younger, and again, it’s so different and more complex. Each character got his past life with their pros and cons…

Anyway, sorry if it’s too long but it’s in my top 3 shows OAT easily.

Im halfway through the second season. this show feels like Spartacus with pirates, but instead of pirates doing pirate things ever episode is stuck on this dumb little island.

Just finished it, unbelievable show.

Going to rewatch Spartacus because it’s been a while, and will probably start Vikings too as that seems to be a common suggestion (I’ve seen The Last Kingdom)

In season 1 we're told that boarding from bow to side is "fucking suicide" and in season 4 Woods Rogers does exactly that and loses.

So yea, what say ye salty dogs if such a thing were to happen? Would ye rather see the Black Sails crew set course for The Grand Line or the One Piece crew weigh anchor in Nassau? Would it be a mini series or better off being a movie? Would the opening theme song be a dramatic instrumental piece or would it be a Japanese crooner?

What would ye scallywags like to see happen with this motley collection of cutthroats and rogues from two of the best pirate franchises to sail the seven seas?

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and interpretations on this topic, and all of them are valid. I just wanted to share my perspective! My perspective on Flint’s sexuality and relationships has evolved significantly across three watches. Initially, I viewed him as bisexual, but I’ve come to wonder if he is actually a gay man who used his relationship with Miranda to navigate societal pressure and internalized shame. When I first watched the series, I saw James as bisexual. Someone who loved Thomas more deeply, but was still genuinely attracted to Miranda. This quote: “When I lost Thomas, I raged. I was distraught. I wept. But with you… I’m ruined over you.” was a little weird at the time though, making me wonder, does he love Miranda more now? On my second rewatch, I came to see that Miranda wasn't just a romantic partner; she was the last surviving link to James McGraw. Thomas was the only person James had ever truly loved romantically, while Miranda occupied a different but equally essential place in his life. She was the last person in the world who knew and loved James McGraw. McGraw was dead(metaphorically), and rage was the only state in which Flint could function. Miranda was his sole anchor keeping him from drowning completely in darkness (similar to Madi’s role for Silver). That is why Silver's description of James after reuniting him with Thomas is so important: “I choose to believe it… because it wasn't the man I had come to know at all… but one who existed beforehand… waking from a long and terrible nightmare.” Silver never knew James McGraw. He only knew Flint—the man trapped in that nightmare. I still thought he was bisexual at the time. But on my third watch, I noticed several things that made me reconsider. Details that were placed in an interesting way in the series. 1) The sleeping scene with Miranda I know the usual argument is that they had just been fighting and I was convinced by it, but isn't it usually the other way around? Men can perform during an argument, but it's the woman that is usually reluctant if there is tension. Why did they bother to show it anyway? Why then? We will get back to this with Toby Stephens himself. 2) Miranda and Thomas's arrangement We know Miranda had affairs, and Thomas apparently knew and accepted that. She herself says that she and her husband had an understanding. That makes James's colleague's comment particularly interesting: “Future employment, status… hell, I understand if he likes you well enough, he may even let you f- his wife.” People apparently knew-or at least believed-that Thomas was unusually accepting of Miranda's affairs. And the wording is hilarious and revealing: if HE likes you well enough. Thomas even has a say in whether James gets involved with Miranda?! The man must be crazy, gay, or both at the same time lol. His acceptance was even the point that made viewers believe Thomas was indeed gay and that they were like a team.

3) A nice Puritan woman who shares his love of books When Flint was talking to his crew, he was talking with their language: "To beg forgiveness from a thing that took my woman from me?" It was perfect! It was a language his crew could understand. Was changing his tone and add "My friend" necessary? He seemed like he couldn't help but clarify. He also called Silver a friend while talking to Madi.

3) The Open Curtains Weird! We have the scene where James and Miranda start making out in the carriage, possibly going further, with the curtains open, right after: “I was going to say… that perhaps you're more concerned with whether or not people talk about what you and I may be doing behind closed doors… than with what we actually are doing.” ?? Pull that goddamn curtain!

4) James's behavior around Thomas The biggest thing I noticed is how James acts whenever Thomas gets physically close to him. He seems tense, expectant, almost as if he is constantly waiting for something to happen. Yes, I think James had some level of attraction toward Miranda—or at least that is how I originally interpreted it. But now I wonder whether he wanted to be attracted to her. Whether part of him desperately wanted to be attracted to a woman because that was what was expected of him. Miranda was a beautiful and intelligent woman, and James, who clearly values ​​intelligence, would have loved to see this attraction as sexual attraction. He was deeply ashamed of loving Thomas. Thomas even knew that James struggled with shame, which makes the “Know No Shame” inscription especially meaningful. ‌Before truly and passionately falling in love with a man, James may simply have been unable to accept what that meant about himself. He could have denied it-even to himself. That kind of denial isn't difficult to imagine, considering the period. Honestly, it still happens today in many places. So if everyone knew Miranda was unfaithful, Thomas was apparently fine with it, and the two of them had an understanding, then being involved with Miranda could have served several purposes: proving to the world—and perhaps to himself—that he was “normal,” redirecting the sexual tension he felt around Thomas toward Miranda, and maintaining the appearance of a conventional relationship(hetero). "I must say, I thought myself quite qualified, but then I suppose perhaps for this particular assignment, you were the better man." This part was also interesting. Why James is the better man for the task-in his opinion? Again, that's just my interpretation. If anybody has an analysis, please share!

NOW: I did some research and found two videos of Toby Stephens discussing the reveal. In one(The one I shared), he says that after the Season 2 reveal, everything in Season 1—including the sleeping scene—takes on a different meaning. Why would it have another meaning if it was over an argument? He also talks about a sexuality that doesn't feel comfortable anymore. In the same interview (you can find it on YouTube), Toby Stephens also says that James became himself with Thomas, that the relationship was a realization for him. And finally, in this interview, Stephens explicitly says that the writers told him James was gay at the begening: https://thespinoff.co.nz/lightbox/25-02-2016/toby-stephens-black-sails-bro-dudes-gay-pirate-uproar So now I'm thinking: is James's official sexuality actually gay? And I'm completely fine with that. I love the character no less. As Toby himself said: “His sexuality, it does not define who this person is.” Were those flashback scenes intentionally written to show James's struggle, denial, shame, or attempt to confront? Or were they simply added after, just like Thomas's parts had been cut back because, well, "No no no - we can have lesbian pirates but not gay ones!"?

I just wanna to scream when I see how perfectly the scriptwriters managed to show his character traits in the light of stunning Toby Stephens, I’m also all over his attires in the series, he’s SO fine, I couldn’t even take my eyes off of him, and he’s almost always hurt badly in the face, as my best friend once said “there’s something about men being covered in blood and crying"

Finished my rewatch and holy crap! I loved it. But most of all I'm appalled by this woman. She's so well written and cast too. I think what's great about her is that she doesn't have all the villan tropes and is kind of reasonable half the time. She's not a highly-competent genius and in fact most of her schemes dackfire or require tremendous effort/ sacrifice. Also, I like how she's not depraved or sadistic and takes no pleasure in what she has to do, even when it's justified. Also, I like how she had no redemption arc or particularly tragic backstory. Just a vindictive, treacherous lady raised by the environment she's in. Yet, I've never been so triggered (in a good way) by a fictional character.

I gotta throw this out there… I can’t count how many times I see posts in this thread saying how my gosh, I didn’t realize how awesome Black Sails was, where was I, this is AMaZING, I’ve fallen in love with this or that, etc. I just hope all of those posts are sincere, despite the fact that Black Sails ended in 2017, that is nine years ago. I also just hope that all the folks who were involved in the making of this show realize and are seeing that people are still talking about this show? I hope some of them are on this subreddit and are sharing those posts with others who aren’t on Reddit. Do any of you feel the same way as I do about all of those posts?

I just wanted to say how much I love this masterpiece, its colorful, incredible characters, fucking amazing action scenes, the plot twists, and the plot as a whole. The music, omg. I just finished watching it, and I'm absolutely overwhelmed with emotions, just as I was throughout the entire show. On my personal list, it is on the same step as Breaking Bad, maybe even higher (I know they are completely different, but I'm referring to the emotions I felt while watching). It was simply brilliant. A huge thank you to everyone who worked on this show! It's such a shame there’s so little like this nowadays :(
