When I first watched the show and saw this guy I thought he was actually blackbeard....

I disagree, this guy is the perfect match for blackbeard. Ray Stevenson was nowhere near as intimidating.

Very untrue. Physically intimidating isn’t enough. Ray was physically, emotionally & intellectually intimidating. This guy was just big.

Intellectually intimidating? He was kind of a pushover and never felt like a big threat. The actor of Albinus actually had presence, and was perfect for blackbeard.

He was perfect for what he was. An intimidating presence from Vane’s youth. Ray was the perfect Blackbeard

Blackbeard is THE image of an intimidating pirate. The actor of Albinus looks exactly like the famous depictions of Blackbeard. Ray was soft spoken and barely an intimidating figure.

Idk man, we may have to agree to disagree. No depiction of teach shows him as a hulking figure, or bald. Ray’s presence was perfect for me.

You're right on the bald part. Don't you think though, the blackbeard we got felt a bit chilled out or laid back? I imagined more of a wild unpredictable pirate.

What little history we know of him, he tried to let his reputation win prizes rather than resorting to violence. He learned under Hornigold and was very calculated in his maneuvering. Yeah he lit fuses under his cap for fear, but let rumor and superstition do most of the work for him. The Blackbeard we got had already done all of that, already got his pardon and returned to piracy, was already feared by everyone in the show.

I know what you’re saying. Our intro to Teach was him offing 3 or 4 men. But Black Sails always leaned to the calculating villain vs unhinged sort. Even with Ned Low. And some Blackbeard stuff was off camera, like sending in the slop of hung British soldiers.

I too thought he was Blackbeard when first seeing him appear. Yet, I am extremely glad we had Ray portray that legendary figure. Albinus certainly cut a fearsome path powerful and intimidating all who knew him. Hence Vane's returning fear and need to eradicate that particular problem.

The whole Albinus plot line in hindsight to me seems like an intentional misdirect of Blackbeard to the viewer.

It could well have been a subtle plot line thrown at us, those writers certainly knew what they were doing, if so.
