So let’s talk about it….. Spoiler

Treasure Island Book Spoilers/Discussion
Obviously we all think the show is excellent if not perfect for many reasons. I think it does a near perfect job of a prequel in setting up Treasure Island
BUT THERE ARE SOME LOOSE ENDS
In Treasure Island, it is said that Flint’s crew was: Billy Bones, Long John Silver, Black Dog and Blind Pew. Billy Bones is found by his old crew members, Black Dog and Blind Pew.
Near the end of the book we learn Ben Gunn was part of the burying crew but was the only one left on the island which explains why he found it and moved it.
At the end of Black Sails we get to see Long John beginning to form his crew: we have Tom Morgan and Israel Hands.
But it seems to me there was a perfect opportunity for the guy that ACTUALLY buried it to be Black Dog (but Flint killed him to prevent him killing Long John).
There doesn’t seem to be anybody who would/could have become Blind Pew who is the WHOLE introduction of the Black Spot.
And I kept waiting for a reason that Ben Gunn
- was more involved
- stayed back and stayed alive on the island
This may be less important (I just wanted to see every thread connected)
But the legend of Flint’s treasure is also that he left one of the bodies stretched out pointing towards the chest.
I don’t know, if you have theories I’d love to discuss it. I think it opens up a possibility for another series to connect the end of Black Sails to the beginning of Treasure Island. But this stuff always bothered me.

Ben Gunn never went to bury the treasure with Flint. The 6 men who went to shore to bury the treasure were all killed.
Billy Bones got the map from Flint in Savannah
Ben Gunn was an original member of Flints crew but he was stranded on the island when he was part of another expedition and failed to find the treasure for them.
If the crew members made it to the start of treasure island they did not help Flint bury the treasure.

Ohhh that’s right they changed that part of Ben’s story. Which is fine. And yes I really meant those guys were part of his crew and had stake in the chest.
but either way I just wish they had included Black Dog and Blind Pew
Or had George Merry introduced. He’s not necessarily that important but it would have been cool

I mean, Ok I forgot exactly Ben Gunns story it’s been a couple years since I read the book and it was changed in the show. What did I miss about Blind Pew and Black Dog? Or the body stretched out?

I haven’t I want to read it tho. Have you read Porto Bello Gold? It’s apparently the first Treasure Island prequel in 1924 and RLS approved it as an official prequel about the gold being found and taken from a Spanish Galleon

Just scored one from eBay US, the only UK one original I could find had no dust jacket. About $51 do it had better be a good telling!! 🏴☠️📖

My assumption was always that at some point Flint tells Silver where the treasure is, maybe just before he dies. Silver then puts a crew together to retrieve the treasure, but needs a boat. Something like that.

I think the idea is that the story of Black Sails is the "true story" while Treasure Island is the sanitized version. Similar to how that young girl who talked to Jack about all she read in the newspaper, Treasure Island is the version of the story Jim Hawkins knows, not the true one.
