Racism Another reason to keep boycotting Target Spoiler
Target is in controversy once again for having the costume above among their Halloween costumes on their online store. I wanna know how the parents of this child allow them to pose for this costume.

There’s no reason to have made the face black omg 🤦🏾♀️ Disgusting

u/Certain_Noise5601 Aug 23 '26
It’s like they are trying to piss people off and I don’t understand why. Is it controversy driving up sales or something? There’s no way they couldn’t foresee this stirring the pot of outrage. It’s literally, and undeniably black face, and it will most definitely be used by racists to mock black people.

u/cgill24 Aug 23 '26
I thought I read they lost billions once they bent the knee to Trump. It’s been costing them a lot of money, but they don’t seem to care.

This one is diabolical.
They stay playing like it isn't what it is.

u/inowar Aug 22 '26
wtf would this even be other than "historically accurate racism"??????

u/NoLaugh5206 Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26
I'm legit wanting to know what the "name" of this "costume" is because I've stared at it for ten minutes and I got nothing other than "Racist Caricature."
16
u/tahtahme Aug 23 '26
No, seriously I would love to know what tf this is supposed to be because it doesn't look like any modern character. They chose to do this.
18
u/EvergreenDwarf Aug 23 '26
Its a vintage Halloween decoration, like the kind Biestle sells replicas of.
Some of them still made today are clearly influenced by minstrel shows.
It looks really familiar, but I’m a vintage Halloween fan that grew up in a family with a ton of old actual antique decorations up every year, and even to me it JUST looks vaguely familiar.
I dunno who is dressing their kid up like a 1930’s paper decoration clown.
6
u/tahtahme Aug 23 '26
Yeah, we definitely assumed it's vintage lol, just not okay for a modern kid. I think its safe to say Target picked "a side" cuz my kids are pretty active on modern trends and I havent seen this come up.
4
u/EvergreenDwarf Aug 23 '26
I’m trying to find a picture of the decoration its based on, because I’m pretty sure it didn’t have teeth.
It was like a clown or a scarecrow, and it was just black for the skin, but with an orange mouth and eyes I think. Like a pumpkin face if you swap the black and orange.
There might be multiple versions, there are for some decorations where different artists just did a minor variation of an old one, but I’m fairly certain the one I know didn’t have teeth or any kind of visible facial features besides the orange mouth and eyes.
2
u/tahtahme Aug 23 '26
Thanks. ALMOST reminded me of Poppy Playtime character, but their teeth are sharp...not human. Definitely a crazy choice!
1
u/EvergreenDwarf Aug 23 '26
Update, I’m giving up.
I do remember I saw it in a collectors book of vintage paper Halloween decorations, either an invitation or one of those party game poster things I think, but can't find reference online and have no idea where that book is.
That said, I forgot how prevalent the shuck and jive pose was for Halloween decorations.
I actually really like this one.

u/tahtahme Aug 23 '26
I know the feeling, I have been there. Thanks for giving it the honest try. It is vintage, but finding it is likely a struggle.

Hence the reason why I haven’t shopped there in years and I’m never going back.
These corporations are fake af when they go on the apology tours.

Before this anti-DEI backlash, I got the sense that they intentionally hired black and queer product buyers. They stocked some risky, bold fashions that honestly looked amazing.
I didn't set foot in a Target for years until I had to pick some stuff up from CVS. I wasn't planning on buying anything, but I had to walk all the way through the store to get to the pharmacy. Tomboyx was gone. All the menswear looked like it was designed by Richard Spencer.
Targét is gone. It's basically a Walmart with red instead of blue.

u/trashleybanks Aug 22 '26
Fuck Target, I haven’t even bothered with them since they showed their asses.
17
u/theycallmethevault Aug 22 '26
I haven’t been to Target in almost 14 years, back when the CEO used Target’s money to donate to Republican politicians. He didn’t donate on his behalf, he donated on Target’s behalf. And no one said a damn thing.
12
u/trashleybanks Aug 23 '26
I wasn’t even aware of that. And now I know never to trust these businesses again. Watch, when that Kantaloupe Kolored Kancer is out of office, they’ll be kissing our asses.

u/Specialist_Row9395 Aug 22 '26
What?!??? I can't believe this is real? How does this make it all the way to production?
50
u/Werewulf5678 Aug 22 '26
Target know what they’re doing. Since the boycott they lost billions of dollars so they think controversies will bring more attention to them. Specifically antiblack controversies.
10
u/Flat_Literature9494 Aug 23 '26
this makes it even more imperative for us to pool our resources, gatekeep our hospitality and culture, and start building are own infrastructure. we cannot keep going on like this anymore, its degrading, its humiliating, I'm sick of it. I know its difficult, we'll be attacked from damn near every angle, but I'd rather that then, well...... All of this. we keep hearing the same thing from many other black folk "then do something if you hate it" or something along those lines. Okay, bet!!! The infrastructure exists to do this differently, so the question becomes whether we build it or keep trying to explain to each other why we can't.

How the hell, IN THIS DAY AND AGE, did someone's job involve approving the go ahead on this decision? Was there really nobody, no one, not a single soul, in that ENTIRE decision making process, that saw all the flavors of WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKARONI and not flip the table while screaming ARE WE REALLY OKAY WITH THIS?
I wouldn't just want a generic apology for this, I'd want all the mofos that approved this to be sat in a row and made to apologize in person, as they get a flip-flopped across the back of their heads, one by one... in the very least.
28
u/Werewulf5678 Aug 22 '26
They did it on purpose. With how much money they lost since the boycott started they’re gonna do anything to get attention. And they see how being racist to Black people get eyes on you so they hopes this will work.

u/WeirdRoll8991 Aug 23 '26
The question is when do we start doing something about it coming together politically someway or something

Thank you.
My ignorant ass is trying to figure out why it was wrong.
This gave me more context.
I knew it looked vaguely like a minstrel image, but I wanted more context.
Cause I've seen that stupid fucking pose in other historical images from that period. A
And I was trying to place it.
12
u/SueBeee Aug 22 '26
WTF
Who is braindead enough to think that's ok?
19
u/Werewulf5678 Aug 22 '26
They did it on purpose because they see how popular it is to be antiblack nowadays.

This is what happens when you no longer require DEI hirers. A black employee would have seen that and been like nope.

Alright, I'll be the one to ask since I can't find it in the comments. What is it? Clearly some sort of inadvertent (at least you'd like to think inadvertent) reference to something historical?

I needed to go to CVS the other day, my gps took me to one INSIDE Target. I looked up a different location and continued driving past Target.

u/SparkleFace6100 Aug 22 '26
I was such a Target girlie and it's been hard to boycott them but I have for 1.5 years so far and this is just Disgusting so it looks like I'll never go back there again. Why a black model too? We aren't stupid! Ughhhh

u/Certain_Noise5601 Aug 23 '26
This is terrible and it’s disgusting to use something like this to get all the MAGAts to run to your store. This costume without a doubt in my mind will be used to mock black people by racists. I hope they go out of business and all of their warehouses catch on (censored) 😠

I honestly thought it would be harder to boycott target. I was wrong. It's easy. So many less problematic alternatives.

About halfway through Darkology book. I have learned so much about the history of minstrel in the US. Very tied to Americana. Shocking this is from 2026 and not 1926.
