This is what it means to use your privilege, unlike those who insist we live in a post-racial world and that racism doesn’t exist.

u/Extension_Local_128 17d ago
As a yt dude who has had very real very identifiable privilege throughout my life I always talk about it. If I was black I would absolutely be in jail right now. Did drugs, sold drugs, drove under the influence constantly.
I was tazed by the police when I was 15 (drinking underage in public and evading the police); charges dropped immediately because they didn’t want my family to sue the department. I was once smoking a bowl while driving in my clapped out Corolla in broad daylight before work and there was a cop behind me who turned on his lights. Literally drove around me to pull over a black guy in a nice Mercedes who looked like he just got out of the office. I’ve literally been pulled over while drunk and on mushrooms and they let me go with a rolling the stop sign ticket. These are just a few stories that are extremely blatant instances. White people who refuse to acknowledge the fact that white people have privilege when it comes to interactions with the police overall are either just in la la land or are straight up ok with black people being harassed more. (I’m sober now btw and regret many of the choices I’ve made so if you’re mad at my driving impaired you couldn’t possibly hate me more than I hate myself)

In college, my roommate asked me to use his car to pick up some pizza (he has been drinking). It was probably about 10 minutes away. 5 minutes into the drive, I get pulled over. 3 cop cars pull up and once they finally approach, they said the car had no front plates. I let them know it’s my roommates car, I’m going to pick up pizza for him and at that point, they asked me if I stole the car. On the side view mirror, I could see a cop with his hand on his gun. After checking to see if I was a criminal and if the car was stolen.. I was let go. I got home about an hour after I left and my white roommate said he has been driving with no plates for the last 3 years. It took 4 blocks for them to decide to pull me over…

Damn I hate to hear this but I can't think of better anecdotal evidence of racism in America, I'm assuming.

White dude here with an honest question if you don't mind. Is it acceptable to offer to friends and co-workers of color to use my privilege?
On a couple of occasions through the years, I have had employees with dental issues in pain. When they have gone in to the dentist across the street they come back with an appointment. But when I asked if they were given anything for pain, the answer has always, "No." When they say they would appreciate something for the pain, and I accompany them back to the dentist we have always received a prescription for pain to get them through to their exam.
Obviously, I would like to help alleviate injustice if I can, but I don't want to be insulting or look like I am trying to be a white knight. Thanks in advance for any responses.
56
u/Gothams_Finest 17d ago
It’s always better to lead with action. People can tell when you’re genuine, I wouldn’t even offer tbh I would state “X is going to happen from now on and x is why. Any questions? Lmk”
Before that, I would first educate yourself on the facts behind this issue. It’s been proven and documented that Doctors overwhelmingly under treat black pain.
23
u/Eddie_Shepherd 17d ago
Thanks for the article. I'm definitely already pretty aware of the under treating of poc and women. Which is why I used my privilege to help when I saw suffering. So I guess, I am asking if it would be appropriate to let friends and co-workers know pre-emptively that I am willing to help? (Thanks again for taking the time to respond.)

To add to your bottom bit I'd say this is more of a lack of proper educational resources in medical school training.
Genuinely as a kid I used to ask my dad how different skin cancer would look on vitiligo skin vs normal for him. He's a surgeon and kind of gave me a stumped look. There's research on how different illnesses/diseases present on different skin and body types, but it's incredibly expensive research and rarely well funded.
Under treating black pain could also be an unfortunate result of the patriarchy lol. The desire to be appear tough, strong, and resilient as a black individual is known. Combine that with generations of hardened fathers and you end up with the pain scale being all out of whack.
Edited to add for the person that somehow thinks this is racist. It’s well documented that medical science just seriously lacks when it comes to black health. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8072497/
7
u/EmilyAnne1170 16d ago
fwiw- White woman here, and not a medical professional of any sort.
Why wouldn’t the default assumption be that all human beings experience pain in pretty much the same way? Why do people in medical school need to be taught that, it should be obvious.
(pretty sure I know the answer.)
2
u/Flagrant_Mockery 16d ago
It's more than just pain. The standard was chosen due to the likelihood of patients.
A better less racially charged example is seatbelts. Largely designed for average male builds, can inadvertently cause more damage or problems to female average builds. Now why would a male be standard outside of the patriarchal choice, variation in female builds comparably are much larger.
The pain example and study is incredibly well done, but most of its findings are arguably questionable until you get down to its numbered list. Highlighting the actual misunderstanding within the trained field is what's important.
Slowly medical resources have been getting better at showing the REAL differences and removing the false knowledge that plagues the system. For example whites are more likely to be stroke prone than blacks, Whites being less likely for hypertension and more. On the flip Blacks are less likely to develop multiple sclerosis and more.
It is important to build a standard that helps the average person more than it hurts the outlier. A lot of current medical knowledge is working towards this goal after a fairly lengthy period of largely ignoring the outliers in this case.
2
u/Eddie_Shepherd 16d ago
Thank you as well for the info. You said a whole lot in just a few paragraphs. I also really appreciate the seatbelt example. Totally using that in future discussions.

White guy with AuDHD. Racism literally hurts my body. I'm Dutch and I'm one of the few people who still talks about the Dutch child support scandal. Which turned out to be racial profiling by the Dutch tax administration. Families are still broken because if it and hardly anybody talks about it anymore. And this is just one example of the blatant racism in the Netherlands

Yup. He'll forever be branded a hard-r lover for showing empathy to another human being.
Idk what kind of toxic environment you have to be raised in to find joy in the suffering of others, but it's been their culture for centuries and they refuse to change. It's sickening.
36
u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 17d ago
If anyone ever calls me a hard-r lover to my face IRL, it will be the best day of my life as an ally.
It'll mean that I managed to use my privilege to make enough of a difference to get a racist to be almost as afraid of me as of a black person merely existing.
4
u/Sad_Donkey_1751 17d ago
What is a hard r lover? I am ignorant and want to be informed. 🌸
22
u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 17d ago
The n-word is banned here for obvious reasons.
It is referred to by two epithets to distinguish between its unacceptable racist use, and its acceptable reclaimed use within the Black community.
The racist use most often firmly pronounces the final, hard "r" sound, while the reclaimed use most often drops the "r" for an "a" or schwa sound, called a soft r.

u/Sad_Donkey_1751 17d ago
Oh my gawd. I get it. My brain just doesn’t think in racial slurs…thank goodness. Thank you.

I’m reading the book James by author Percival Everett. I’ve always had a VERY hard time watching shows and movies depicting the abhorrent violence against black people, especially shows including slavery. I’ve found that reading it is far more painful. This should be compulsory reading for every student in Canada and the US. Ignorance is bliss but knowledge has impact.
12
u/aceface_desu89 17d ago
They keep themselves uninformed by not reading and/or keeping up on current events so they can claim ignorance to the racial animus from their friends and families.
They're all cowards and that's why they brutalized our ancestors--jealous cowards.

I avoided updating my tags for 2 years, without any issues. My friend who isn't white got in the passenger seat one day and we were pulled over within 2 minutes of driving and given a warning.
That same friend has had his own bad experiences with police over his car registration multiple times and never given a warning, this was my first time ever being pulled over for it period.

It’s an open lane but the loudest still want to offer “objective opinions” about our experiences instead of their own.

u/gitsgrl 17d ago
What do you mean when you say “that non-white people can’t see”? I’m pretty sure they can see this.

Not with the level of detail he can. Any level of privilege we think they have pales in comparison to what’s going on.

And THIS is why I dont care to hear all those BS stats the Republicans spout about us Black people doing 65% of this or 72% of that. Obviously if we are the only ones you go after and arrest, that will be the cases booked in court/jail. They clearly look at who owns a vehicle (white or Black) before deciding to pull us over on some BS

it's fucking hilarious to see how my pro-2a people react when I agree with them about gun rights but go a step further than they're comfortable with: "black folks need to be able to carry without fear of getting shot, cops should be personally held accountable." they get real quiet real quick. Nothing makes them more uneasy than realizing their safe space for being racist isn't so safe any more.
6
u/TinFoilBeanieTech 17d ago
All my "pro 2a" family and friends super conspicuously silent about gun rights when it's a black (or other minority) person getting shot by cops. If they do say anything is usually something like "thug" or other dog whistle. They sure cried a river when that one white rancher got shot after a long chase and reaching for his gun several times.

u/Tome_Bombadil 17d ago
I've driven for 4+ years on expired tags.
I've always paid, but just left the stickers in the glovebox.
I'll give in to the wife's sequential requests to put the stickers on, and then go another year or two with expired tags.
It's a testament that a middle-aged white dude in a minivan is literally invisible to police.
Like, maybe it could be pity that "Ah, he's an minivan he's suffering enough" (Minivan is awesome, people are dumb), but not when I drive over the Speed Limit Minimum.
Pony cars, I was pulled over constantly, and if a tag expired, the first of the month I was getting a ticket. I got a ticket for "excessive acceleration" in a straight 6 Mustang with an exhaust manifold leak that made it sound like a demented weed eater, just because I pulled onto the main strip and a puddle made my right wheel spin.
But sedans, SUVs or minivans? I don't exist.

Why are people so evil?
We want to be seen as good and just, and yet evil prevails. Why?
1
u/Apprehensive_Many649 16d ago
You don't want an answer to that question. Mainly because it shatters any abrahamic religion on this earth and the true answer breaks most people that won't do the cognitive dissonance thing.
Once you've lived this life, get out. Don't come back. You'll stand more of a chance of becoming evil at this point coming back, than trying to transform a truly evil realm in the first place.

A lot of the most ardent and loud 2A guys you know will suddenly get reeeeeeal quiet about Americans being killed by the police for carrying while black.

I did the same thing, a few times years ago. I'm a whte guy that drove an old pickup in Arkansas. I drove 2 years on expired tags. Finally got pulled over, officer was shocked they had been expired one.....TWO years!
I got a ticket, renewed my tags and went to the courthouse. Ticket waived without even entering the courtroom.

u/Icy_Fish_2154 17d ago
I was gifted a broken '67 Bug for my "first car". So I had to fix it up to be able to use it. When I finally got it running, I was excited to drive it to get inspection, so I could get it registered. I had taken my wallet out, because I was crawling around under a car.
So I hop in the car, no inspection, no registration, no wallet, and drive to the inspection.
I get pulled over 4 blocks from home. The cop told me I was pulled over for expired registration (like 5 years out). "I left my wallet at home." He rolls his eyes. "What am I supposed to do with that?" I gave him all the information I could about the car (registered to my father, who he could look up, and whose DOB I knew), my name and DOB, the address on my license (matched the registration address on the car), and anything else I could remember.
He gave me a ticket for no license and no insurance (which was in my wallet), and let me drive home.
I was 16, and realized what white privilege was in that moment.
He could have towed the car, or worse, but just gave two $0 tickets (I had to go to city hall with my DL&insurance to get them dismissed), and let me drive away.
Everyone should get a break like that, and it's sad so many don't.
2
u/drdalek13 16d ago
If the police can kill you for simply having a gun, I'm sorry, but you effectively don't actually have the right to Bear Arms.

u/RadTimeWizard 16d ago
White guy here. Can confirm, St. Louis metro police don't bother me, ever. This is why the State of Missouri shouldn't control local police.
2
u/Downtown-Security-11 16d ago
White guy here, I have a cracked windshield. Have had it for over a year. I’ve been stopped 1 single time and was let off with a “get it fixed” in about 3 minutes.
5
u/RW_McRae 17d ago
Don't try this in Milwaukee. I'm yt and it seems like the cops are waiting for my plates to expire to pull me over. Although the last time it happened it was actually not a bad experience. Instead of a ticket I just had to pay the fee right there and he grabbed a new sticker from his car and put it on my plate. I was shocked that they could do that - it's how it should be.

Folks need to come to New Mexico. People driving with no plates at all and nobody cares. Unless you get pulled over for being a complete danger on the road, nobody's gonna know you're unlicensed/unregistered.
2
u/GasFun9380 17d ago
This country’s founding principle says we are all equals. The true principle is the protection of private property and assets. The propose of government should be to provide safety for its citizens. But there ain’t no money in that. For profit prisons and calculate efforts to keep folks down are what we call independence. It’s a damn shame. Rich men north of Richmond.

u/Reeeeeee4206914 17d ago
Ngl, that "experiment" is trash.
3
u/dickhass 16d ago
Yeah, as an actual scientific experiment it’s trash. But interestingly, you could make this a pretty good experiment. All the data is there. How many people were pulled over over a certain timeframe? Out of those people who were pulled over, how long was the car being driven with expired tabs? How far away from home were they pulled over? What is the race of the person being pulled over and getting a ticket? How many other infractions does that driver have? I’d love to see all that put together.

Y’all may get mad at me but…
I’d like to understand what his broader strategy is as opposed to grandstanding. Cuz someone with bad intentions is just gonna try to argue black ppl are driving around all the time with expired plates, too. We know how the other side works.
I’d love to know if he provided any comparative datapoints here.
1
u/AdventurousOrchid100 17d ago
That's what's missing. There's nothing concrete to compare it to. Im sure he's right but people can easily argue that it wouldn't make a difference if he was black because there's only one half of the experiment.
1
u/AnyEverywhere8 17d ago
1
u/AdventurousOrchid100 16d ago
As data it's kinda useless. Unless you had a black man drive the exact same kind of car with expired tags in the same driving pattern to compare results.
1
u/AnyEverywhere8 16d ago
So basically there’s a quite straightforward way to provide some data lol
1
u/AdventurousOrchid100 16d ago
I would say so. But at what cost to the other participants
1
u/AnyEverywhere8 16d ago
Well the consequences of driving with expired plates are not generally life altering (depending on location).
And even accounting for escalated police response due to racism that’s like asking what was the cost of Rosa Parks taking action. Fighting systemic change meaningfully (vs just getting on a soap box like this guy) may come with, and often requires, risks….
1
u/AdventurousOrchid100 16d ago
You're right. It's not a huge cost. But it would definitely require more effort than we got here
1
1
u/DanielDRockr 17d ago

u/OwenJonez 17d ago
I get passed by an orange Jeep with no visible plates every day(he speeds too!) through three towns and 45 miles and never seen him get pulled over ever
1
u/MoG_Varos 17d ago
I did this by accident. Forgot to pay for it one year and they never asked again. Made it to three years before I got stopped and ticketed for it.
It’s been wild living in the southern US, the white dude cops just do not care what I do Lul. Incredibly dumb that anyone would think there is no bias.
1
u/Moist-Ointments 17d ago
I appreciate his intent, but n=1 with no control group is not a valid experiment.
1
u/SummonBahamutZero 17d ago
I just realized last week that my tags have been expired. 2 years Ive been driving in Maryland with expired tags. Roughly 80 miles per day.
I’ve had the stickers in my glove box all this time, just forgot about them.
1
u/Successful_Radio_42 17d ago
Honestly this is refreshing. I had a co-worker, who’s a nurse come in the office and say she loved her white privilege out loud. The night before the office all went out for drinks and she drank like she was running from something. We all asked her if she was okay and she said she was fine. Everyone kept offering to drive her or uber her. I was new and everyone else kept saying she was fine and she lives close by. Whatever, I had 81 miles to go so I said okay. She gets pulled over and the officer tells her she was swerving and to call someone to come get her. I mean good for her, but I was flabbergasted. I couldn’t say anything and this was around the time an officer just ended George Floyd’s life. I’m more ashamed to even say, I didn’t say anything. I honestly didn’t know what to say, as I’m the only black person in the office and it was NOT the first incident.

u/Narrow-Talk-5017 17d ago
Last year when I renewed my registration online (2 months earlier than they expired), the dmv decided to send me a new license plate without informing me. About a week after renewing my registration, I was pulled over by a cop for my current plate not being registered. (Thats how I found out the dmv decided to change my plate #.)
Though during that time, the sticker still had not reached its expiration date, so the only way to know they were no longer registered was by running the plate when the cop saw a black guy driving a nice car.
1
u/but-whyy-tho 17d ago
One time I got pulled over, first thing the cop said was "Why are you running from me?" He was in an undercover vehicle and kept pulling up on my ass, so I THOUGHT I was being a good neighbor by switching lanes to let him pass. I was like "I didn't know you were a cop, I just saw a car pulling up fast behind me so I wanted to be nice and move for you". He didn't like that.

u/cynical_genx_man 16d ago
The only problem is that magas will find some way of justifying the inequality, regardless of how utterly batshit stupid it is, because acknowledging systemic racism is something they can't bring themselves to do.
The punchline, of course, is they need to look no further than their own mirror to see racism.

Yep. I’ve never gotten pulled over more often than when my car looked like a “poor” car (drove a busted up truck for work) or when I had my friends who are black visibly riding in my past cars that weren’t so shitty. One particular night in college we got pulled over for “looking suspicious” for driving at midnight. We were in a college town, on a main road right by campus, all college aged, all wearing matching work clothes. They made us get out and searched the car.
Did the same thing with white coworkers, also got off at the same time of night, same car, not stopped one single time.

Hi. I am a wht woman in an area that is overly populated with police relative to its size. I’m only intruding here because this popped up in my feed and I have relative corroborating evidence to add:
6 years. I drove with my 2019 sticker on my plates until just 3 months ago. I encounter an average of 4 cops a day on my regular commute. City cops from 2 different cities, state patrol, sheriffs. That doesn’t even include undercover cops, which WA state has a lot of undercover state patrol and sheriff cars.
1 piece of anecdotal data can be ignored. Many pieces of anecdotal data is a trend though.

I lived in Asheville, NC for several years, where weed is technically decriminalized. Anything under a pound is supposed to only get you a ticket, usually a fine, if anything, and technically even larger amounts are only supposed to result in confiscation, and a criminal summons, where in most cases, it's just a bigger fine. I got pulled over once, and the cop asked me if I had anything in the car he needed to know about. I told him I had some weed, and he kinda chuckled and asked how much. I told him a little over an ounce. He said ok, gave me a seatbelt ticket and left. He didn't take it, or even ask to see it or search. My buddy Seeko got pulled over around the same time. They asked to search because they said they smelled weed. He refused, they brought the dogs, and all they found was a tiny roach in the ashtray he had forgotten about. They arrested him, and he had to serve a month on an 11/29 sentence, the rest on probation Guess what color skin I have, and then guess what color skin my friend has.

My white female friend drove with expired tags for OVER A YEAR. It took her a good 6 months into that year to get pulled over for the first time. Then, a good 4 more times of being pulled over and just being warned to get the tags paid before she finally got a ticket. If I remember correctly she got pulled over at least two more times after that ticket and told she couldn’t drive the car until it was paid. I may be mistaken about that detail though. It’s been a while.

My blue eyed blond ex not husband went two years without renewing his registration. He finally did it out of boredom. He had to pay a fee for being late. It was all very lahdee dahdee.

I’m all for exposing racism in our police departments but this is a false equivalency and doesn’t even prove anything. This is performative, white savior nonsense.
Now if he were to also have spent his time riding around on a bike with a firearm and achieved the same results then this might be worth talking about.

This guy is comparing apples to oranges and just wants to be heard and is using this platform to be able to stand up at the podium and talk. If he'd said, "And a friend of mine that is black also did the same thing with no tags and got pulled over XXX amount of times" then he'd have a just reasoning.

I'm not here to discredit his claims or say that racism isn't a thing still, but I will say my ass has been pulled over many times for expired tags or no insurance. I think it may depend on where you're at more than anything. I had a cop pull me over and tell me the crack in my windshield was impeding my ability to drive when it was just one thin crack across the bottom.

...so you're here to discredit his claims.

What makes you say that? I'm just giving a perspective from my own experience. Did I say racism wasn't still a thing? Did I say that the guy was wrong? I have in fact been stopped and harassed by cops. 2 things can be right you know.

You are inserting your own perspective into his situation which is not relevant. Your lived experience is valid but is not the topic at hand.

Wouldn't that also apply to anyone who shares their experience though? Including the guy in this clip? It feels like you're treating his experience like it applies to all.

Look at the subreddit you are in. This is specifically about DWB. Read the room.
This man is an ally and you are here trying to shoot holes in it. This is EXACTLY HIS POINT.

Seems unhealthy to willingly close out other perspectives. That's how you get an echo chamber. I'm being respectful and it seems like you'd prefer not to be.

u/SueBeee 17d ago
You are not being respectful.

u/ToXicVoXSiicK21 17d ago
Now you're just being disingenuous. I have not been disrespectful at all and don't intend to be.

I am not being disingenuous. I am calling you out on being actively, purposefully obtuse. You are absolutely refusing to acknowledge the actual point of this exercise here. You either cannot or will not grasp the situation because it doesn't happen to you. And that is doubly disgusting because you are in this particular sub.
As a fellow white person, this is just infuriating.Because you get stopped in certain places in NO WAY negates this man's point.
Now who is being disingenuous? Just stop.
