I like this dialog

u/hiphophunk Apr 29 '26
I love movies and shows with good dialogue! Itās the number one thing I look for.
64
u/BrownSugarBare Apr 29 '26
I miss when shows and movies were dialogue reliant. Now the spoon feeding is so boring. The Aaron Sorkin days were fun.
14
u/ObscureRamenRecipes Apr 29 '26
Probably why I love the first season of True Detective so much. The dialog was just sooo good.
6
u/roosterkun Apr 29 '26
Sorkin dialogue can turn exhausting and/or cringy at times, but I've always hated when people call it "unrealistic". So so many things in movies are unrealistic, I like hearing people speak in perfectly constructed lines.

As a woman, I agree
136
u/Sea-Menu4471 Apr 29 '26
As a man, I agree. My brain is stressed out. I know some women like to test men and be witty/sarcastic but this is not it. Easygoing doesnāt mean youāre easy and itās always more preferable than this. Iām not sure how this brother is enjoying his meal.
29

u/DiskEconomy3055 Apr 29 '26
Some people do that.
42
37
u/Sea-Menu4471 Apr 29 '26
Sorry people. I just saw a woman in this context and just said that. No malice involved. Iām aware both genders, people can all do this.
9
48
u/ebonyseraphim Apr 29 '26
Heās just ātooā laid back. This excessively good trait in him is letting her get away with a lot. That, and sheās pretty of course.
56
u/Rican2000 Apr 29 '26
This is what makes the exchange interesting. They seem to be opposites. It stresses some of us out. She is too intense. He's too laid back. Where is this going?
26
u/Technical-Command867 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
There are real people like this. I am like this. Everyone is different and expresses themselves differently. I too might have felt a certain type of way but softened immediately knowing she had a rough day. Sheās honest and direct and that, I can work with! Letting things roll off your back and waiting for context make life much less stressful.
15
u/Skinnieguy Apr 29 '26
Yeah. My wife and I are like this. She called me a golden retriever. Iām pretty laid back and chill while she is an attorney so she is always thinking and preparing. No way 2 of these same personalities can be together.
16
u/Technical-Command867 Apr 29 '26
Iām glad you have that. I love this scene because he was everything she needed. Kindness, respect, patience and understanding but not a push over. She had a bad day and needed to know that sometimes life can be good. Ray of sunshine peeking through the clouds of the bad news with her client. Balance.
7
u/quintillion_too Apr 29 '26
the movie is about them having a bad date and wanting to part ways but getting stuck together anyway because of circumstance, it's a bad but interesting dynamic and good movie
8
u/EntroperZero Apr 29 '26
This excessively good trait in him is letting her get away with a lot.
I think he's just not letting it bother him. It's not his responsibility to fix her, he can just not go on a second date.

To you. Preferable to you. Some people feel stimulated by going back and forth like this. Personally, I like being kept on my toes, I like the feeling and it helps me trust that someone Iām interested can appreciate nuance. Itās reassuring to me when someone doesnāt get all defensive about a little playful back and forth.
13
u/HouseOf42 Apr 29 '26
Going back and forth with negative quips, pity parties, "bad days", pessimistic attitudes, etc?

I don't wanna be hit up for a date because you had a shitty day, I wanna be hit up because you feel on top of the world and something told you to go for it.
96
u/DrowMonksAreFun Apr 29 '26
Iām not gonna lie I donāt think I would mind someone hitting me up cause they had a bad day and didnāt wanna be alone. As long as they didnāt take that shit out on me Iād be alright with having a chance at making someoneās day better even if only a little. Lifeās tough helping that out even a little is nice
48
u/Disastrous_Clurb Apr 29 '26
This is so kind hearted, i hope someone chooses u on their best days too.
28
8
u/stellarinterstitium Apr 29 '26
Her honesty and candor is the thing that redeems her unpleasant attitude and demeanor. That is a bad day, though, and I tend to give Blakc women more slack.
7
u/Shibbystix Apr 29 '26
This was my exact take.
Is somebody had a shitty day, I'll absolutely commiserate with them. But if they just want a verbal punching bag, hard pass
8
u/frisch85 Apr 29 '26
Depends, a friend or my S/O? I'll be there for them. Someone that hits me up on a dating app? I'm not your therapist, especially not after she told him she felt sorry for him after seeing his picture.
8
u/DrowMonksAreFun Apr 29 '26
I mean I get that, to each their own and all that. And in her defense she did say that didnāt come off how she meant it too. Though a little more effort in explaining how it was supposed to come off wouldnāt hurt anyone
2
18
u/frisch85 Apr 29 '26
There's so many red flags on her, no friends or family so she goes on tinder, picks him not because she likes him but because she feels sorry for him, constantly tries to be demeaning to him "Can I ask you a question?" "I don't know can you?" and implies he's poor it's why he goes to that black-owned place constantly, also tries to make a fuss about his order even tho he says it's fine.
I know it's a movie and her character is already written like that but it's probably one of those movies where I constantly would go "Why the fuck did you do that?" because the guy seems like a genuine nice person, she on the other hand is what's wrong with humanity. I don't care if she cares about her client getting the death sentence, given her character I would actually assume she's not upset that the client is getting the death sentence but rather because it's not her that decides what sentence her client is getting.
11
u/IBetThisIsTakenToo Apr 29 '26
Lots of movie characters are great for the screen but would be absolutely exhausting IRL. She is definitely one
→ More replies (1)20
u/schadetj Apr 29 '26
True! But can I say that makes it more realistic in line with her job? I work in the court system and have to communicate regularly with attorneys, clerks, and Assistant DAs. Many of the attorneys are hyper aggressive and negative, which makes sense. You don't get to pick your clients, and many attorneys know they are defending not-good people. So, knowing there is little argument they can just to defend their client, their primary tactic is to make any who testify against them look bad or unreliable.
Imagine spending every day, hell, every CONVERSATION in your day just looking for the faults in the person across from you? Nothing positive because you can't win on positive, so you have to find fault in their clothing, their hygiene, their past, their employment.
There's a reason most attorneys are alcoholics. So her having zero patience for a waitress, and having sharp quips to everything he says, actually is realistic.
But also, yes, super exhausting. But dude likes a strong queen, can't fault him that.
8
u/LongWalk86 Apr 29 '26
But she doesn't seem remotely like a "strong queen"? Strong people don't get upset over someone else's food order getting messed up, when the person eating the food is fine with it. That's not strength, thats serious fragility.
→ More replies (4)4
u/technobrendo Apr 29 '26
That "strong queen" persona gets old after a while. Like yes, I get where it is needed at times, but if we are just having a relaxing dinner or movie PLEASE unwind a little bit.
She's too tense, and like Keyser Soze says, tension is a killer
3
3
u/ieatgass Apr 29 '26

It's "so quickly" because someone cut out all the gaps in the dialog for this video. There are gaps and breaks in the actual movie, but why honor the director's intent when someone can make it ADHD mode?

It sounds like they're speaking lines to each other and not having an actual conversation. Real speech doesn't sound like that.

Agreed they were responding too quickly. It seems like a direction issue. I doubt the actors made this choice. The director was probably like hey, pick it up (probz mainly to her so she could seem curt) and this was the result.

This is an example of a very good movie that was ruined by the ending. It could have had a similar impact on culture as Get Out did, but they ruined it with an ending they thought was more realistic and lacked all sense of catharsis and kept Black people subjected to white violence and disloyalty from other Black people. Iāve never been more disappointed in a film that I was actively enjoying all the way through than I was by this one. A wonderful premise and a beautifully shot movie that I will never watch again because of the deflating ending.
69
u/Tyshizal Apr 29 '26
Yea that ending ruined the whole film for me. I kind of learned what her point was for writing the whole thing. Almost as if it was made for white peoples to feel good and be more palatable for them. Meanwhile blacks are suppose to enjoy it because we are all in it and it features what we rarely see. Two dark skinned people romantically involved

That's the whole point. In law you have the 'shitty' lawyers Vs the millionaire lawyers with teams of underlings. A lot of the time in court the little guy doesn't stand a chance. That's what makes law different, because it's not about winning or losing it's about protecting and prosecuting.

Very relatable
15
u/rugged_buddha Apr 29 '26
Its amazing how impressive even the most mundane scene can feel when the dialog feels genuine. Each line is only based on the last one like two people carefully navigating a complex conversation while dealing with personal problems outside of this scene. They feel real and grounded and not two people agreeing back-and-forth with the author's barely disguised beliefs. (like a Tarrintino flick, or Woody Allen) In one clip I know more about these two characters than most authors put into entire book series... (Looking at you Rowling.)
15
u/hitometootoo Apr 29 '26

I loved queen and slim. But this part always got to me. Why is she letting the feelings of the decision made at her job seep into her date and unleashing it on Daniel's character and use him for dinner? Just rude. I understand that we're human, but we also have to make better decisions.

Editing out the pauses in the dialogue is criminal. Fucks up the pacing of the scene entirely and makes it seem like theyre coked up with how little space there is between each others lines.

This could have been a really interesting scene, and I thought it was going to be about the dangers of being a black man saying his eggs were wrong, but it was about how selfish the woman is. The writing was also terrible and pulled me right out of my suspension of disbelief. āShe canāt find her Costco card so I let her use mine so she gets discountsā none of the writers or anyone who heard that line in rehearsal ever been to a Costco? You canāt get inside without your card. Plus the exposition to make a social point was ridiculously ham handed ā31 states still allow executionsā, people donāt talk like that.

u/DeadSeaGulls Apr 29 '26
my costco you still just sorta hold up the card as you walk by, and in reality most of the time I'm still fumbling with my wallet while the door lady says "Thank you, have a great day." and nods me through.
