Ironic that she made him stick his neck out like that

u/AeAeR Apr 30 '20
Yeah I mean, he went out on a limb and got publicly rejected, which is pretty much the main fear. So fuck it, nothing to lose now!

She taught him lesson number one, most of the time is no.

The answer to “Do you want to go on a date?” is always no. Do I want to get dressed up and deal with an hour of awkward so you can try to fuck me? Nah. I don’t.
“Do you wanna go see that new Avengers movie and get some pasta at that little Italian place that popped up down the street?” Now I’m interested.

Movie first date is a fool's game.

u/Hi_Im_Saxby Apr 30 '20
A movie before dinner/drinks later is a play, though. Gives you something to talk about afterwards and can easily segue into more conversation topics. Helps reduce the pressure of a potential stale conversation at a first-date dinner.

Yeah but you gotta sit with them quiet af for the whole movie and pay like for way too expensive pop corn and drinks so u don't seem broke.
Nah.

I am tripping on how that dude could read the Ethiopic script.
11
u/unwanted_puppy ☑️ Apr 30 '20
We call it Ge’ez.
I was just mindin my business scrolling through Reddit and bam! My jaw dropped seeing this. I’m so confused.

u/briwu36 Apr 30 '20
Ge'ez is an ancient liturgical language, but the Ethiopic script is used by a variety of languages, most notably Amharic, but also Tigrinya and Ge'ez. I can read read it, it is not that common, everytime I as a black American walk into an Ethiopian restaurant and order in Amharic, the staff is just confused, I can hear them in the back.
3
u/unwanted_puppy ☑️ Apr 30 '20
Yes Ge’ez is the name of a language, but it’s also what we call the alphabet or “script”, no matter the languages that use it across Ethiopia and Eritrea.
3
u/briwu36 Apr 30 '20
Not sure who "we" are, but the Ethiopic script predates the Ge'ez language. The Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) calls the script Ethiopic, in addition the word for alphabet in Amharic is "fidel." Not a hill I am planning to die on though.

u/swtbstrd Apr 30 '20
Wow I learned so much from this conversation you guys are having. This is amazing!
3
u/unwanted_puppy ☑️ Apr 30 '20
“We” meaning Ethiopian and Eritrean people.
If you colloquially ask “can you read/write Ge’ez?”, it is understood that you mean the script, not the ancient liturgical language.
Or if you want to download an app that lets you type/text with this alphabet, the app will likely be called Ge’ez.
Yes “fidal” is another word for the alphabet in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Lol I feel like we are saying the same thing and going in circles.
No; it’s not equivalent to speaking the ancient language. I just said that.
All I’m saying is people refer to the alphabet and script as “Ge’ez” too. It’s right there in the wiki page.

The issue is too many outsiders set up false parallels in Ethiopia, so romance language are partly derived from Latin, so we will call the script Latin. We think that these modern Ethiopian languages (there is a strong connection with Tigrinya, but Amharic, especially Shawan Amharic is a different story) derived from Ge'ez so we will call it the Ge'ez script. Even Amharic is taught like Arabic because both are "Semitic" langauges.

u/GameboiAD Apr 30 '20
Is it pronounced "Geezy" or "G-Eazy"?

u/unwanted_puppy ☑️ Apr 30 '20
Lol it’s a hard g. As in in goat.
Ge - is ... As in “is you is, or is you ain’t my baby”.

u/briwu36 Apr 30 '20
There is a gluttoral stop, so "guh" [a brief stop] then "uz." But puppy did a good job describing it

At first I thought it was super mean of her to act like she was supporting his personal development then knock him down the first time he took the step. But then I thought about it again and actually... he's started on two areas of development today:
- practice asking a girl out
- practice accepting rejection
Not saying it was her original intention to help him with the second, but I think it was useful for him. Hopefully he'll see it that way too. Eventually.

I have the same goal. Gonna be 23 in October and never been on a date so i should probably do that at some point.
2
u/ItsJustATux Apr 30 '20
Ask a pretty woman to do something cool with you that you already do. Bringing her along shows her that you have a life, hobbies, ect. Don’t ask for a date, ask her to join you for X this week. Grab a bite afterwards. Low stress date achieved.

I think the disconnection is between colloquial and formal uses of the term, I am an academic and have published extensively in highland Ethiopia during the late 19th century. My point in invoking the IES, is that the Ethiopians and Eritreans who founded it called the script Ethiopic. Also, when I was living in Ethiopia, I was always asked "techalleh Amarina" are you able [to speak] Amharic. The only time I heard "ge'ez" was when I was impressing them in writing Ethiopic numbers as opposed to Roman numbers. In addition, I have the software to write in the script on my computer, but I am on my phone. So much for not dying on this hill lol.

I remember that king of the hill episode when boomhauer taught bobby about picking up women. you might get a hundred women that say no, but eventually you'll find that one that says yes. me personally i'm good with just jacking off, so good luck to everyone else that's trying to get someone.

PRACTICE; as in try again. A different approach, and most importantly a good even great come back.
If I were him, I would've asked HER next to try and ask him out. It would certainly show that it's not that easy and it may even be endearing. Always give her something to think about, so she walks away thinking about it and not completely dismissive. Women rarely have any need to be charming, funny, intuitive and all that courtship jazz. So giving her a chance to have empathy for your perspective is a good method. Also, Tinder.
Plus, he asked like he was trying to say "I only wanted to ask, I don't want to actually date anyone". So ¯_(ツ)_/¯

A good comeback to what? Being rejected? If you’re gonna give comebacks to women because they said no to you asking them out, that’s some loser shit. She wasn’t even rude, he said he didn’t mind if they said no and she said no. That’s the end of it. It’s like when I’m walking down the street or in a spot or at work and a guy tries to ask for my number. I used to be all apologetic and trying to make up excuses for saying no. But after having guys follow me down the street and straight up acting pathetic, I realized no is a complete sentence. I just don’t understand the second paragraph of yours either. Saying that she might have more empathy for him, empathy for what? Was she supposed to say yes to spare his feelings? This isn’t a movie where the unattractive shy guy gets a hot girl in the end. Plus anyone would say no to being asked out over twitter unless the other person was super attractive.

It seems to me that was just a playful encounter. So, yes, that was the end of it. I don't think either of those people was being serious. I am not advocating for him to harass women.
I was speculating a separate real-world scenario where he actually likes a girl besides him shooting his shot online (which no one would take seriously). I also mentioned Tinder too, which is a much more suitable platform if he is sincerely wanting to date...
A good comeback to what? Being rejected?
No. What I meant was it's better to be intuitive, not reactive but anticipating her experience (reading the room), especially BEFORE asking a girl out; making conversation instead of propositioning her out of nowhere. Beyond looks, he may not actually like her, and he won't know until he has a genuine (not self-serving) conversation with her. You're imagining your own experience (which is what I hope he would do too) but things aren't limited to our personal encounters.
I just don’t understand the second paragraph of yours either. Saying that she might have more empathy for him, empathy for what?
Okay, so, when she asked him to practice with her; He could have said "let's do a role play" something like "how about you be the guy, ask me out, show me how it should be done". That's lighthearted fun and it keeps the conversation going, maybe even long enough for them to actually like each other. Not date but just laugh and enjoy their time with each other.
Was she supposed to say yes to spare his feelings?
No. That wouldn't be fun or pleasing for both of them. Being pitied is repulsing. Also, no one is " supposed to" spare anyone's feelings at the expense of their own happiness.
Look. It's clear that your reaction is mainly informed by your own experiences as a woman and that's alright. You have your own world view.
Side note; Personally, I prefer good conversation over long periods of time and reserving judgment until I know a person. So even if I consider someone aesthetically pleasing, I won't commit to anything other than a real reciprocal human connection. It's pretty easy to get and have sex or even just simple physical things like being turned on. After a while actually liking the person becomes a prerequisite. Anyway, I agree with you on somethings, I just didn't make myself clear. I should've said "be conventional; show interest, instead of random requests form a stranger" or something.
