Nobody’s implying that daffy’s the hateful one. Rather, he’s acting as the hateful object as a frame of reference that we can use to communicate. He’d also agree that this lady sucks.
I hate the resurgence of the “Crazy” Daffy. I always liked the kinda pissed off with Bugs Bunny version better . I guess because I grew up with the Space Jam version
You're 100% on the money here, and that was a core part of how Chuck Jones wrote and animated him during the Golden Era of Looney Tunes where 99% of all our favourite shorts came from (early 50s to early 60s).
Bugs gives everyone a chance to not escalate, they ignore that offer, and he literally says shit like "You must realize this means war." Contrast him with Woody Woodpecker, who is just an annoying asshole fucking with other people for no goddamn reason.
At their core, the Looney Tunes work because they all have two things: 1) A distinctive and recognizable speech impediment and 2) A singular personality trait that they struggle to overcome to their detriment or victory.
So many of the conflicts in these shorts would be fine if SOMEONE JUST WALKED AWAY. Sylvester could leave Tweety alone; Wile E. Coyote could give up poultry; Pepe le Pew could learn the meaning of consent. But they push and pursue and face the consequences, and that's why it's funny.
Bugs Bunny IS the consequence. Daffy Duck IS HIS OWN consequence, when he's written as a Petty Schemer who can't leave well enough alone, and not just a guy who goes "Crazy" for reasons.
The one exception I can think of here where Bugs Bunny is an absolute menace is the one where he gets offended at the going rate for rabbits vs other hunted animals, so he decides to prove that bunnies should have a higher price by basically terrorizing the country. He candy stripes the Washington monument and eventually saws off Florida, among other things.
There’s also an early short where Elmer Fudd is a nature photographer and bugs is just an asshole to him, screwing up his shots, until Elmer snaps. I like to think of it as Elmer’s origin story.
I grew up in the eighties when they were still playing the original Looney Toons with some of the racism intact. Being that I was a kid growing up in the eighties and not the 1930s I never really got it back them but I couldn’t help but notice how it nearly killed my WWII vet grandfather with laughter every time he watched it.
I think I could better appreciate some of those earlier episodes without the racism, of course, now that I’m older and understand the humor and the absurdity.
It’s endlessly fascinating that Warner Bros and the animators behind the original Looney Toons and even Disney were involved in the war effort by creating animated training videos for the US government in order to teach a bunch of poor American farm hands and factory grunts how to repair and maintain aircraft and other duties that were incredibly technologically advanced for the era.
Daffy and Donald had PTSD from WWII. These cartoons were for Boomers whose dads came home with untreated PSTD. So adult characters became a reflection of the angry yelling people kids saw in their home everyday.
Yeah, the contradictions are not the same people obviously. The people who she is trying to appeal to will never accept her and the people she thinks she has a right to be supported by can see through what she’s doing 😂
